It is happening. The question is only, how far beyond the number it can go. It will be the most crowd-pleasing BP winner since Slumdog Millionaire. That made 30.4% of its gross after the Oscar win. La La Land will be well above $100 million before the ceremony. In fact, it will probably hit $125 million before that. I think it can top Chicago's unadjusted total.

 So happy this movie is exploding. I think it's seriously benefitting from the immense acclaim, the drought of good new releases and honestly the current political climate. People are looking for feel-good escapism.

The media has hyped it beyond belief. It's a water cooler movie. You have to see it and be in on the conversation.

So far, the club looks to be a success.

This could be at $78 m by Monday, and $85 m by Thursday. Oscar noms aren't even out till January 24th when I expect this will be at $100 m.

Then there's Oscar nominations, Valentine's Day two weeks later, then a February long weekend a week later, then the Oscars a week after that (probably followed by a singalong version, theater expansions and on off with the Oscars, dollar theaters, $200 m looks like it could happen. Shockingly, this will be Gosling's first $100 m movie.

I wish I had joined this club when I had the chance, because $150M is so happening. With Oscar noms still around the corner and Valentine's Day still to come it should play really well over the next month and I could easily see it making a run for $200M once the initial hype/rush for Fifty Shades Darker dies down.

If this makes 200 million, I will be amazed. 150 is plenty.

If Rings flops La La Land could be #1 February 3-5 weekend.

If La La Land makes it to #1 that weekend (its 9th) it will tie for #2 longest run to #1 of all time, behind only A Fish Called Wanda in 1988 at 10 weeks. Absence of Malice from 1981 also reached 9 weeks.

There's Something About Mary needed 8 weeks. Though all of those weeks are wide, Mojo tracks from initial release week.

It's shocking that in this day in the age of immediate everything that a massive wom success can still take over. Heck, $250 m isn't impossible though still too early.

Do you completely discount the masterful marketing campaign and its use of an effectively mounted platform release?

I agree with bradley. I've brought it up several times, but LLL would be well over $100m by now if it had opened wide on Christmas day. It's a musical for people who don't like musicals and has had "movie of the year" buzz for several months. It would have been a $100m hit in summer too.

Too bad it's not for people who like musicals.

Why must musicals only be for a niche audience? La La Land is for everyone, dude. People that like musicals and people that typically do not. It is a very happy, romantic, and fun movie, so I don't see why you have to find an angle to trash it.

... so even after that fiasco, La La Land should still pass $150, it's $9.2m away.

Yeah, the fiasco might even help it a bit, because it and Moonlight are all anyone's talking about. But either way it's safe, especially with no DVD release date still.

Moonlight has scooped La La Land's expansion.

Quote:
A24 is nearly tripling the domestic run of “Moonlight” following its best picture Academy Award with the coming-of-age drama going into at least 1,500 theaters.

“Moonlight” played at 585 sites during the Feb. 24-26 weekend and grossed $591,201 in its 19th weekend, lifting the cumulative total to $22.1 million. The expansion will put “Moonlight” at its widest release, which previously had been 1,104 locations during the Jan. 27-29 weekend following the film’s eight Academy Award nominations.

Looks like we're getting a bit of an expansion in my state, both with locations and showtimes. Might be a little late to make a big difference.
