come one. Its Luc Besson movie. It wont bomb that bad. Trailer aint so bad either.
Trailer might be good visually but it's a terrible trailer as far as selling the story and characters goes. I'm pretty sure 9 out of 10 people would have no clue what the movie was about if you showed them the trailer and asked. And for sci-fi you need to have something really good to hook the audiences to show up OW. Valerian doesn't offer anything. It will bomb heavily.
On topic: Nolan is obviously shitting when talking PG-13 is a rating he's most comfortable for his big blockbusters. Like WB would allow him to make Batman anything harder than PG-13. He hasn't made an R rated movie since 2002 which is when he entered the big studio game and became their little bitch. R rated war movie with (what I'm sure will be) $200m+ price tag doesn't fly with the studio. They want their money back.

Would the R rating even hurt it though? I'm guessing 75%+ of the opening weekend audience is over 25, let alone 17.

I thought the new trailer clearly sold the story. I am not sold with the leads but this movie is right up besson's alley. its not going bomb.

Spy Kids in space? LOL. Now I'm even more sure it will bomb. Besson might be able to sell it in Europe though.

Yeah I don't see the appeal for Valerian other than people looking for dumb visual spectacle (unless the reviews are good which I highly doubt they will be).
As for Dunkirk I wonder if this goes Interstellar route and doesn't get "glowing" reviews like Nolan norm of 80's-90's in RT. Silence last year showed that passion projects don't always generate enough buzz even with good director/cast/critic ratings but then again that was a December limited platform release and this is being treated as summer blockbuster so Dunkirk is not going that low but it can do a generic war movie numbers.
1. Super Mario Bros Movie 2. Rebel Moon 3. Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 4. Oppenheimer 5. The Flash 6. Elemental 7. Aquaman 2 8. Dune Part 2 9. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 10. Blue Beetle

We've already see what the baseline box office fed primarily by the Nolanites for an objectively bad movie with Interstellar - $188m. But even that tricked the sci-fi crowd (including myself) into seeing it once. But now, what will the war movie crowd make of a "not a war film"? I'd say there's a good chance for Dunkirk to stay below $150m.

What's with Harry Styles? Is he like a cast member or singing in this?

In. Great trailer and social media response has been predictably huge. It has 2x as many tweets and GOTG2 so far today.

I am at $200m still but I see at most $220m for it.
this is happening. its going to have fantastic legs. Even a high 50s opening will be enough for this to happen.
You act like a high 50's opening is easy to achieve. Interstellar came up well short of that opening number. I think Dunkirk opens around $30-35m in North America.

It will open to 40m, maybe 50m if reviews are spectacular, but I do feel it has an ambience of "just another war movie" that will keep it from true blockbuster status.

What's your definition of true blockbuster status? If it opens to $50m and has great WOM, it will go well past $200m. That's pretty good in the environment we see today where it's all about established franchise type material.
That said, I think it's far more likely to go around $30-35m opening and even with really good WOM ends up around $115-130m. Would then need to make some pretty good money overseas to not be a big financial loss for Warner Brothers.

Re: Dunkirk 225m+ Club
INGLRIOUS BASTERDS, with a hard R rating and Imaxless, 2009 ticket prices opened to $39m.
This is not opening to $30-$35m. Nolan made the untouchable DARK KNIGHT trilogy, plus the awesome and meme worthy INCEPTION. Nolan is god to Millennial nerds.
That said, if this flopping makes THE DARK KNIGHT 4 a reality, than...flop away, Dunkirk. FLOP AWAY.
