hm... as this approaches I'm feeling like this will underperform.
Sadly I'm getting the feeling this is going to get absolutely crushed by Logan/BATB. Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell will hurt too, but not as much as those two. Warner Bros has really fucked up the potential of this movie IMO. I didn't want to say anything before, but the marketing for this feels so lackluster. I'm seeing plenty of tv spots, but nothing great and honestly it's giving me flashbacks of how Independence Day: Resurgence was treated last year. I don't think the movie itself will end up being that bad, but a similar box-office performance wouldn't surprise me now.

They still have some time before it opens, but yeah, they don't seem to have created much buzz.

Holy shit, I had no idea this was opening next month.
For some reason I was thinking this was a July release or sth.

This doesn't have an ounce of the mountainous hype that accom[anied the PJ erosion.

Yeah the issue is that it's marketing is being drowned out by excellent campaigns for Logan and B&TB. In hindsight they would have been better off moving to summer because no month currently looks as crowded as March with the exception of October.
Warner Bros needs to not waste anymore fucking time and lift the embargo for this as early as possible. Early reactions are out and everyone pretty much seems to agree that this is much better than Jurassic World and Godzilla. Not all are just fans attending free screenings either, but some legit critics really enjoyed it as well.

This should have moved to August. It would have absolutely killed there. I doubt it will tank but a sub 150m gross seems likely.

Re: Kong Skull Island Predictiion Thread
Peter Jackson's (amazing, underrated) King Kong adjusts to $292m domestic. It wasn't a failure per se, only compared to expectations. This never had a shot at coming close to that number tbh.

Re: Kong Skull Island Predictiion Thread
I'm seeing just 120 million and maybe less. Something like the 300 to Rise of the Empire type drop. There isn't much advertisement for it for a march film. I'm seeing more ads for Logan and Ghost in the Shell at this time. Power Rangers seems like a dark horse to me that it would either do very poorly or do very well due to nostalgia.
If this makes $150 mil, I'd be ecstatic as an exec. They completely screwed up the release by keeping this in March. Like... any idiot can clearly see March is overstuffed. There is no way it can handle this many big films.

Got two early screening passes for this next Wednesday. I'm fucking pumped to see this and Logan next week, but at the same time doesn't this mean it's not tracking that well, because I remember Warner Bros pulling this at the last minute with In The Heart of the Sea? I hope that isn't the case, but it wouldn't surprise me either.

Gonna try and see this tomorrow... and embargo ends Thursday 5 pacific.
Nodody is talking about this but I won't count out Legendary's ability to open larger scale projects. They are pushing Kong pretty hard, at least on TV ads.

Not sensing a lot of hype for this, although I'm obviously hoping it's the second coming of CONGO (a charmingly bad movie made by people that know they're making a bad movie).

If this trailer had been the one attached with all the winter blockbusters, its prospects would be much, much brighter.
As is, I think a $35-45 million opening sounds right. Legs depend on WOM and how destructive BATB and Power Rangers all are.

Re: Kong Skull Island Predictiion Thread
Movie was enjoyable, I'm gonna guess reviews will be okay.WB will probably push marketing hard next week.
This film is a BIG crowdpleaser. My crowd really ate it up and those who were disappointed with Godzilla or Jurassic World will be more than satisfied IMO. I hope it does well, because I definitely want to see more of this Kong in the future.
Also, the after credits scene was fucking dope.

Re: Kong Skull Island Predictiion Thread
Definitely, my crowd really liked the after credits scene.
It's a shame this won't do better than Godzilla, it's waaay more enjoyable than that film.
I watched this last night and if you enjoyed Godzilla you'll like this. If you were annoyed how Godzilla wasn't on screen much and didn't like it much then you love this.
I thought this was Fantastic. Literally had my mouth open half the time. Kong was visually just amazing and the action was ridiculous. It was also quite funny. Sam Jackson and Reilly were very good, very funny. I hope it does good business and at least matches Godzilla's gross. It also has an end credit which was lovely.
Hoping for an 80 opening. Will definitely rewatch this on cinemark XD or Imax

I don't know how many others will feel the same, but Sam Jackson is used perfectly in this movie. It's Sam Jackson being Sam Jackson with EPIC one-liners and all. Also, if we can get Star Wars/Star Wars spinoffs and superhero movies every year than we better fucking get a Monsterverse. Don't get me wrong I like that other stuff too, but I'm a HUGE monster movie fan at heart and the potential of future movies in this universe is pretty damn exciting.
I think this movie looks like good fun. I'm surprised I'm not hearing more "real-world" chatter about it but our numbers have shown for over a month that awareness is there.

So what is the consensus re: how this is going to do? It can't miss 100m domestic, right?
