Looks like I'm seeing this next Wednesday. Embargo lifts the next day I believe.

It'll be a disappointment if it doesn't beat SM3 OW $151.1m (IMO).
Iron Man is all over the marketing so it should do it.

An opening in the $124-$135m range would be superb. Seems to be heading for that ballpark.

It won't be a disappointment. Anything above TASM2 should be good, which would make it only the 4th(?) movie this year above $100m OW mark.

The only disappointment would be under 100. Anything over that is acceptable for a brand new SM film+IM.

This is the mighty MCU Spider-Man + Iron Man combo movie. If it can't top 150m OW then it's a disappointment.
This ain't Sony's shitty ASM franchise.

But there have been one too many incarnations for the character recently that dampens its demand a well. The last movies of the character failed to open to $100m just a few years ago so this is definitely not a cake walk number for it.

First reactions from critics on twitter have been very, very positive.

Yeah strong reviews even at 90% would not exponentially increase its OW.

I'm out. I'm thinking 130mil. The reviews don't factor into my prediction. It's an MCU movie, of course the reviews will be good.

The early buzz for this is really positive, but after WW I'm not going to let it inflate my expectations as far as the opening weekend goes. However, it's going to be BIG and at this point an opening north of $120M seems all but certain.

Posters make it look like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but the difference is that it has Iron Man. It's not cracking $150m, but I hope it does well. Would be nice if it manages over $120m. It's a tough one because Spider-Man just isn't a huge draw anymore. If this manages uber-numbers, it will be down to its inclusion in the MCU and Iron Man, not Spidey.

Even with poor reviews TASM2 managed a $90m+ OW I don't think that says that the character is no longer popular.

Which, in 2002 when Spider-Man opened, would amount to $64m. That's almost a 50% cut in admissions. Spider-Man is not able to post uber-numbers anymore, as proven by the latest film's sub-$100m opening weekend. So, as I already said, if it manages big numbers, it won't be to do with Spidey. He can amass $90m, sure, but the rest is coming from people's interest in the MCU and Iron Man.

That's Excel level of logic hiding behind inflation adjusted numbers. Also since when is $64m after 4 movies including a reboot sign of unpopularity?

I did not say Spider-Man is unpopular. I just said that he is no longer $150m OW popular. Try reading before commenting.

But you also make it sound like anything above $100m could not be attributed to Spidey and will only because of Iron Man inclusion, that is not true. Also TASM2 did $94m and that was with poor reviews so $100m OW from a Spidey movie is not far-fetched regardless of the inclusion of MCU characters and to hit that number it needs even lesser admissions this time. During Civil War it was the other way around, Spidey helped its marketing and thus the OW as well.

Well, who's to say what part of the gross is or is not attributable to which character. Spidey will get the bulk, sure. But if it manages $120m, I do not think it is too unreasonable to say that Iron Man helped tip it over the century OW mark.

I do agree that MCU will help Spidey's OW a little but I do think the character has not lost all of its aura as an upper tier superhero because of multiple incarnations. It can still draw $100m worth of crowd (unadjusted) and that still means a BIG opening, more so now that it had so many rapid reboots.

I'll probably be in the minority but I thought the movie was just okay... lower tier MCU, I'm surprised people are praising it so much, although Holland is very good.

I'm keen to see how this does though!
