Stephen King's It predictions
Release date is set for September 8th 2017. Of course a lot will depend on the marketing and the reviews, but as long as the film is not a total disaster, I believe we'll see huge things (for a horror movie). Over the past three years, the activity my website has been getting for some articles definitely correlated with later box-office success, at least to a degree. You could see what audiences were interested in. Most of you will probably shrug it off, but I have seen it over and over again. And what I know is that every single article we have published on IT, people went crazy for. No Star Wars or Marvel articles have been shared and commented on as much as IT. Now we do skew more towards horror fans and horror fans are very active onlinbe, that is true. But comparing it to articles on any other horror movies - it is just in its own league. I think the TV-miniseries from 1990 made an enormous lasting impression on an entire generation and while some do oppose a "remake", many seem to be very very curious about it. I mean, it's a fucking scary clown that traumatized an entire generation of kids. So, assuming it gets solid reviews and good marketing, I'm thinking: Opening Weekend - $40 million Total Gross - $100+ million

Too early but I see it doing Insidious Part 1 numbers.

I didn't remember that one. I remember Dreamcatcher, and thought it had been since the 90s.

In a previous thread you said the Civil War stuff about Spider Man got the most activity you've ever seen on your site.

Re: Stephen King's IT predictions
It won't be scary enough. It'll be shit.
In fact, your reasons, Lecter, are the reason that it will fail. The whole generation that checks your articles on IT that grew up with it are the most likely to shun it when they see anything for it because they have Tim Curry's so deeply embedded in their mind. So, with things like this, I would say the more activity on your site, the worse it will do.
I think we should be anticipating a bomb, not a hit. I'll go with $25m total.

Re: Stephen King's IT predictions
I'm surprised Stephen King even wrote a movie about Information Technology (IT).
If anything they should be doing a remake of his old classic: It.
Not to mention that the fact that is being released in the first week of September, the graveyard of box office, is a very bad sign.

Re: Stephen King's IT predictions
The releas date is poor but perhaps it moves to late September and it has a shot at 100m

It doesn't look like they have much faith in the movie with that release date.Probably somewhere around 70 million.

Re: Stephen King's IT predictions
The look of this film will matter alot. If they can mimic True Detective Season 1's visuals...this film will make $$

Re: Stephen King's IT predictions
Reading the comments about the poor opening date is further proof that people have learned nothing from SW7 or AMERICAN SNIPER...
People, there are no bad opening dates!
Just last year we had TWO (!) movies (THE PERFECT GUY and THE VISIT) opening with $25m+ each in the post Labor Day spot.
Other big openers in the post Labor Day spot (adjusted for inflation):
$40.3m THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE (2005) $31.9m RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE (2004) $31.0m STIGMATA (1999) $29.0m RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE (2010) $26.9m I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF (2009) $24.3m CONTAGION (2011) $20.8m SNEAKERS (1992) $20.1m RIDDICK (2013)
Especially horror movies have been doing quite well in the past...

Yeah, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is what I was thinking too. It is a prime spot for horror movies.

Re: Stephen King's It predictions
Unless Warner fucks up the marketing, this film will clean up. The recent horror clown craze is just free pre-release hype, heh.
Seriously, the source - also thanks to the 1990 miniseries - is very well-known and beloved. It should clean up in September 2017.

Re: Stephen King's It predictions
Depends if the clown craze continues over to next year. It seems like the type of thing that governments will try and ban.

Re: Stephen King's It predictions
People will probably still remember. Also, how can you ban something like that? If they are threatening people, that is already illegal. And you cannot just ban clown costumes.

I don't know about this one. The casting of Pennywise just seems really bad, I think you needed someone really solid to bring this home.. Also do we know yet if this is just dealing with the child portion of the book?

Re: Stephen King's It predictions
This could be big, but they need to market it right. The clown craze will help it a bit, but it would have been more effective had it started next year imo. Anyways, I'll need to see a trailer first before I make any kind of prediction.

Aren't they going around and intentionally scaring people in clown costumes? I think the UK could easily set initiatives to ban that sort of thing. PCSOs could fine you for anti-social behaviour and what-not. But sure, it could easily lead to it being MORE remembered and this will probably help the film.

Re: Stephen King's It predictions
Well, UK has banned weirder things (nunchacks?!) in the past, so who the hell knows. But most countries probably don't care.

Re: Stephen King's It predictions
$50m+ opening easily. Could go as high as $80m+ if it looks amazing, gets great reviews, and the marketing goes just right. This clown thing happening now is beyond ideal for the film, it's hard to believe whoever started it wasn't doing a publicity stunt (the only reason I don't think it is is because a publicity stunt would have happened much closer to the film's release).
