The exorcist: the Beginning is probably the most recent one I can think of. The island of Dr. Moreau has a pretty famous story as well, of the director who had worked years on the project, was fired, lost his mind running into the jungle not be seen for months, but apparently would sneak back on set as an extra in full monster wardrobe. Film pretty much blacklisted Val Kilmer afterwards as well.

Also if I remember correctly in Waterworld Costner fired Kevin Reynolds with a good amount of filming left that he just did himself.

The more I think about them leaving the film, the more mad I get.

It sounds like they were making Han Solo into a comedic character, and Kasdan flipped over it. I wonder how much of what they shot will end up in the film.

The directors of a bunch of comedies were making a known sarcastic Cowboy movie into a...comedy???

Seems pretty dumb to hire them if the script was comedic... and that's not what they wanted.

That is indeed bad at this stage of a movie regardless of its profile. I wonder if we will even know the actual differences. I mean what did Disney want hiring those two in the first place?

Well Rogue One was supposed to be a mess too and had behind the scenes drama and while no masterpiece, it turned out better than Force Awakens and the last hour (from when they get to the last planet) was legitimately awesome.

I still have faith.

The worst part is that we'll never get to see the Lord & Miller Han Solo - I bet it would have been at least 100% better than the homogenized product that Disney is shooting for.

It won't ever happen, but I hope this film bombs now. Disney needs to stop meddling and just let directors make unique movies rather than micromanaging so that they all look and feel the exact same. First with Ant-Man, then Rogue One, now this?

I dig Howard--his general botching of those Da Vinci Code movies excepted, he has made several entertaining films and showed real artistic muscularity with Rush--but this seems unflattering for him. To be the hired gun brought on after two respected, successful directors were fired for not toeing the Disney line.

I guess he wants an easy box-office win after a wildly ambitious failure (In the Heart of the Sea) and a wait-this-was-meant-to-be-a-surefire-hit failure (Inferno).

I'm more inclined to believe that the film is just plain bad given how long the directors have been on here and given their past success.

Surely Disney/Kennedy saw the dailies and saw what type of movie was being made during the shoot?

I'm guessing it just didn't work at all as a cohesive movie?

The backstory on this will be fascinating. This is a gigantically expensive decision to make.

Yes, that would be the dream, at least one or two of the Star Wars movies would have turned out to be great movies. It mostly worked for the Alien franchise.

There's always one corporate apologist on every forum. I bet the Disney suits came down every morning reminding Lord & Miller that they wanted yet another exact carbon copy of Ep. IV, just like they did with Ep. VII and Rogue One. It's a smart (at least in the short run) strategy to maximize box office by appealing to the broadest common denominator, but in the long run it will choke the life out of their golden goose.

I don't think it was bad, it was just too much of a comedy from all accounts. They had the actors improvising lines and it wasnt the right tone Lucasfilm and Kennedy were looking for.

Still not sold on that explanation, because funny is in right now, Guardians exploded because it was quirky and fun and funny, and Disney seems to be going that route with Thor Ragnarok. They had 0 problem going a little dark in Rogue One, I don't really see any reason to believe that comedy Solo was just off the reservation for them.

The only believable thing to me beyond a bad movie is that Kasdan just flipped a shit and said "me or them" and they sided with Kasdan.

The movie being too comedic just does not mesh with MONTHS worth of shooting. They would've known the tone of the movie immediately watching the dailies, not to mention the fact that they hired them in the first place knowing exactly what type of movies they make (and the success that went along with it).

Post Re: Han Solo predictions (05/25/18)
Star Wars Is All the Same Nowadays, and It's Becoming a Problem

Quote:
Disney’s plan, as we know it, is to release a Star Wars movie every single year until it stops being profitable to do so. The “saga” films will be “episodes” continuing the main Skywalker family story, and they’ll alternate release dates with “anthology” films, which will be standalone stories set all over the Star Wars universe.

These anthology films seemed like they would be ideal places to experiment with Star Wars and keep it from getting stale. One of the things that so ignited the imagination of fans was the world-building of Star Wars, which created a universe that could support all sorts of stories. Tragedies, comedies. Stories about saving the universe and more personal, private ones. The fact that all of those things easily fit in the universe makes it feel real....

Remember how everyone went nuts for Captain America: Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy? Part of the reason those films stood out was because they were so different from anything else we’d seen in the Marvel universe. By all appearances, Lucasfilm doesn’t want that much variation.

Well it appears it is keeping the Memorial Day date despite the production trouble.

That month long stretch with this, Deadpool, Incredibles and Jurassic will be INSANE.
