Re: Star Wars Episode VIII Predictions
Less than VII but still a lot.
It's hard to say without knowing what the response to THE FORCE AWAKENS (and ROGUE ONE) is like.

I guess we can all agree on that the opening will be bigger and the legs shorter than EP7...

No less than 500m, though being so close from Guardians 2 worries me

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII Predictions
Close to Guardians and same weekend as Lego Batman. That will obviously move but it puts It in a shitty position as the rest if the summer has TS4 and DM3. November has Justice League.
I like the release date but its far too close to Rogue One.
They probably should have waited until after the sequels to release these stand alone films.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII Predictions
I'm sure I'll like it, but the WOM among fans is what will be bad. There is absolutely no way it could live up to anyone's massive expectations, which is why the prequels were badly received.

Actually, because of the prequels I could see them having better WOM. These fans now have much lower expectations.

Too many franchises.
I don't care about any of this.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII Predictions
At this point I'd be willing to bet money that it'll break the midnights record. A STAR WARS movie + the fact early screenings will be on the 40th Anniversary of the original? They'll hype that to all hell.

Rev wrote: zwackerm wrote: I don't think it will be good. Dude is smoking something Not really. It's the same psychology as another Batman film will get. zwackerm is young. The prequels, to him, are THE Star Wars films. Those are the ones he grew up with. So anything that looks new in that world will be met with instant worry that it won't live up to the "perfection" that he's seen before. The same could have been said of Star Wars fans in 1997-99 when anticipating Episode I. While they were excited and keen to see it, I bet all of them were scared of the potential damage that it could do to their precious original trilogy.

Bump.
This will open bigger than VII. My prediction is $50m more on OW than whatever VII's final tally is.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII Predictions
Before EMPIRE opened STAR WARS had grossed $287.6m (Original release plus re-releases in 78 and 79). EMPIRE did $181.4m in its original release:
$287.6m SW1 $181.4m SW2 = 63 %
Compared to the prequels:
$431.1m EP1 $310.7m EP2 = 72 %
I think we can expect SW8 to see a drop somewhere in this range...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII Predictions
I think it'll retain a little more of its predecessor's total than the second film in the past two trilogies, but a decrease is likely inevitable. The new film appears well-received by most, so the new trilogy shouldn't lose as many original fans going forward as Episode I did.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII Predictions
Here's the difference between AoU/TDKR and SW8...in many ways SW7 was an original film. Obviously the Star Wars name and nostalgia drove the hype...but when you watch the trailers, you have no clue who most of the people are. 10% of the trailer is Han Solo, 90% of the trailer is completely new characters never seen before anywhere.
The next movie is going to be the sequel for all of the new characters. Plus for any who have seen SW7, you know the next one is likely to ratchet up the excitement even more. SW7 is an appetizer.
