How can ReelFX, Weinsteins, etc. be major animation studios?

 How can ReelFX, Weinsteins, etc. be major animation studios? So it appears that despite being much higher quality of film, The Book of Life will barely make more than Free Birds in it opening weekend last year. What will it take for studios like ReelFX, Weinsteins, Laika, even Sony Pictures Animation, to get on the board with a Shrek, Despicable Me, Ice Age, Frozen or Toy Story size hit?
