Oh man, this does suck. Why not just leave it as a stand alone site? It has so much data.

I doubt BOM and the data will be gone for good. But I suspect Amazon is turning its archive into a subscription-based service under IMDB.

Why is IMDb so secretive?

Re: The End of an Era? BOM goes gone girl
IMDb is kind of bad about explaining themselves sometimes. I'm a contributor, and I remember that when they announced out of nowhere that the Help board was to be rolled into GetSatisfaction, the contributors instantly went ape-shit and jumped to the conclusion that the Help Desk and/or the entire Contributors Help board was also going to be shut down. It took damn near a week for them to definitively state that Contributors Help wasn't going anywhere and that the old Help Desk form would still be accessible - but in the meantime there was tons of vitriol heaped upon IMDb and Amazon, threats of "I'll never contribute again" and so forth. If they had just explained early on that they were just handing off newbie-type help to GetSatisfaction, and not doing any of the things they were being accused of, none of that would have ever happened.
So it may just be incompetence again. Or not...

I refuse to believe it's gone. Hopefully SOMETHING official comes out soon.

Now The New York Times has an article about it. Granted, it has no new information, but the fact that even they have an article on it shows how big of a big this downtime is becoming.

This is terrible news!
I hope the site comes back somehow, or at the very least, the site's valuable information lives on to be freely accessible.

Below the box-office chartt on IMDB it says:
"See more box office results at BoxOfficeMojo.com"
When you click on it now, it redirects to BOM's Twitter. This is a new change.

I feel like this should be Breaking News on all major networks. Complete with panels of experts and their theories.

Re: The End of an Era? BOM goes gone girl
I don't see the benefit to anyone to shutting it down, restructuring it, revamping it or any overall tinkering. No one is sitting around today thinking "Well I'm glad that's finally gone!"
Although I think best case scenario it becomes largely a pay service. Maybe access current year info for free but anything older will be for a fee. Which I think will cut down on traffic but I would consider shelling out if the price was reasonable.

Re: The End of an Era? BOM goes gone girl
I just checked Alexa - it doesn't make any sense to get rid of BOM which is currently ranked in the Top 2,500 worldwide websites http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/www.boxofficemojo.comAnd IMDB doesn't need any more traffic, it is already in the Top 50... http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/imdb.com

Re: The End of an Era? BOM goes gone girl
I find it hard to believe all of the historical data is gone forever. The secrecy about everything does point to some kind of fee based access.

Is there any way we can catalog all of their data on KJ?

This can't be happening. Next to WOKJ this is pretty much the only other site I check on a daily basis.

Re: The End of an Era? BOM goes gone girl
When I used to search for boxofficemojo, Google would give me options to see cache stored pages. Not anymore.

It no longer leads to that IMDB chart, but rather to a blank page. Hmm...
