Those were terribly received or were TV adaptations, though, and even if it isn't as good as the first, critics are likely to be at least a little kind to the Lego Movie 2, as they are to most kids movies.

The Lego Movie played just as much to kids as it did to teens and adults, IMO.

Depends on the directors, IMO. I think the ceiling is around $280-300 million. I doubt it will go higher. The floor is $180 million.

Shrek 2 was terribly received? That's news to me.

Nobody said that in the history of the world, let alone in this thread. ;)

Shrek 2 is a great comparison as to what happens when an animated film overperforms to circumstances, and its sequel comes back to terms

Has a sequel ever overperformed so much and then had the next break out in a similar fashion?

Post Re: The Lego Movie 2 Predictions
No, and I've actually written a few articles on it. It's all about meeting mass audience. I don't consider a film that does 200 million and the sequel does 400 million to really count. As with most films there is always a ceiling with their audience. Unless you can really expand on the audience (The way Avengers did with the 2nd generation films) Once you hit that max, there is almost always a drop off. It doesn't help that the 350+ earner sequel is usually terrible too. As we've seen animated films can do 400 million, but I'm hesitant to put Lego Movie in that. It's more niche than people give it credit. But the sequel does have a chance. If it's going to increase, it'll be big, if not, it'll stay level or drop off slightly.

After probably 30 years of the same thing. Avengers 2 might actually have a chance, but for it to really breakout on top of the breakout it would need to get close to 700 million. That 15% increase has never been hit on a uber breakout.

What would give you the impression that its niche when it grossed over 250 million, and sold about as many tickets as despicable me 1?

Right time, Right place, no kids films, a solid holiday weekend for kids 2nd weekend, box office was on fire at that time, and it was a very unique idea. I think the film would be more of a given to increase if it stayed in winter.

You've kind of covered all the bases there.

The LEGO Movie was not a niche product.

Every movie awesome movie character together (Huge animated cast), legos (Everyone's childhood toy, and popular games) isn't niche? It's niche by default. Granted a universal niche, that everyone knows. But does that scream 400+ for the sequel? Not sure.

As said, it's 3 years off. There may not be any movie theaters left

If its a universal niche, than wouldn't that make it not a niche? And shut up. The point of that thread was the record, not that there will be no more movie theaters. That won't happen for a while.

Well this is coming out in Feb 2019 (5 years after the first film!). WB's strategy with this franchise has been rather odd. Seems to have been diluted somewhat and not capitalized on the original's success.

$170-$200m total

Ninjago was a bad idea. Dilluted the brand. This will pull a How to Train Your Dragon as a result.
