Alfie - Potential Bomb
Okay, we have had Surviving Christmas being the biggest bomb in a long while, it seems and I consider Alife the next potential candidate. It is a remake of the 1966 movie with Michael Caine. It stars Jude Law, Marisa Tomei and Susan Sarandon and it is a story about an arrogant womanizer.
The movie is R-rated and it comes out on November 5th against The Incredibles.
I think, so far, this movie has had no buzz whatsoever and I don't see a point in this remake, really. It has also been delayded numerous times which does not speak much for it. The trailer is lame too and, seriously, I don't see anything about this movie that should make people want to go out and see it. Jude Law is a good actor, but I don't think he is a draw.
Here is the trailer for the movie:
http://64.170.176.220/paramount/Alfie/t ... _large.mov
My predictions:
Opening weekend - $7.6 million
Total gross - $20.2 million
What are your thoughts on it?

I don't see any way this can get past 30m. It has bomb written all over it for the reasons Lecter mentioned.
4.5m/11m

I think an opening of about 10M with a total of 30M, is reasonable for this movie. Personally I think it looks pretty good, but I've never seen the original, as with many other people I think.

reviews range from 4/5 to
to 0/5 "A slaughter of the original. Jude Law is smarmy and annoying."
Nearly all the reviews ive read say that Law is irritating, not very good in the role and you quote "want to punch his face in".
The adverts certainly do nothing to dispell that
Alfies out in the UK now.

Well JUDE LAW is hot, in this film anyway (spy captain and the bomb of tomorrow! nO!) ALFIE opened on friday in the UK, and it's a contender for number 1.
So methinks it's gonna be big here, and hopefully its success will spill over to the uk.

Those are numbers similar to what Down with Love made.
Alfie and Down with Love are very similar.
Both Alfie and Down with Love open against a highly-anticipated blockbuster as counterprogramming.
They both star a semi-famous European actor, and the plots of both movies are pretty similar as well.

I hate this movie so bad. The TV spots (rarely ever see em) are so annoying.

Zero Buzz, even with Law hosting SNL it seems like Ashlee Simpson took all the attention. Zero Buzz = Zero Box Office Potential

Isnt the movie classified as an indie and has a low budget. I can't see how it can bomb even if it makes only 20 million dollars considering I heard the budget is almost in the same range as I Heart Huckabees. I still find it funny that just a few months ago, you guys were predicting that Jude Law will possibly an oscar nomination for his role in this movie.

I do not think that it is an indie. The original wasn't, as far as I can remember, so I don't see why the remake should be. Furthermore, it is a more or less major release in UK and the whole movie seems (from its trailer) as anything, but an indie. You can't compare that with I heart Huckabees. Alfie has a pretty much staright story without any absolutely quirky elements (again, as far as I remember from the original).

Yes it will bomb (IMHO heh).
Jude Law is the most over rated actor in terms of being any sort of box office draw. He's not bad when he really acts, like in Gattaca where he was good, but he's sucking in the leading man who puts butts in the seats thing.
Also, I don't know how much this is having an effect but I suspect his personal life isn't helping. He left his wife (Sadie Frost) and baby to hook up with a young starlet Sienna Miller. I don't know if it has a negative impact on his career but I really doubt it would have a positive one.
Edit: Oh it's an indie flick? With all the publicity I'd seen I thought it was a main stream 50m type movie. In that case it might not bomb but still I don't expect it to make much of an impact of any kind.

I could definitely see an under $20M gross happening here. My hope is for at least a $40M gross (I really like Jude Law), but the buzz is pretty nonexistent and the movie's riding squarely on his shoulders.

Jude Law is a good actor. He was great in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain and Gattaca, but he cannot attract masses of viewers...
