It was shown on TV, when I was there, around 1996. So much for that. The thing is that the Rocky films have always been rather obscure in Russia, whereas Rambo was VERY beloved, including Rambo III, which the Soviets/Russians had as much of a reason to dislike as Rocky IV, but they still loved it. Though I believe the second was the most beloved in Russia. So, please, no statements like this if you don't know it Western films have become available on pirated VHS since 1984 when they've started the local production of home VCRs. Then after perestroika "videosalons" brought them to the masses, way before 1991. Thegun wrote: I know Rocky IV was banned in parts of . Trust me, I made plenty "Since the fall you must know" jokes but Rocky IV escaped him

Kind of interesting, but still very much flawed in that it only takes in the US grosses.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
Cobra was such a huge international hit.
In Japan it had the biggest 2-day opening in Warner Bros. history at the time with ¥400,000,000. It had the biggest WB openings in Thailand, Colombia, Argentina and Spain.
It broke the opening weekend records in Venezuela and Brazil, which then it went on to become the biggest film in Brazil in 1986, grossing $4.1m.
It eventually grossed $160m worldwide, which for an R-rated film, must have been one of the highest-grossing films of all-time. That's the power of Stallone back in the 1980s.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
Rocky III had the 2nd largest opening weekend ever in 1982 with $16,015,408 (4-day), behind Superman II (which was at 456 more theatres), so it just proves that Rocky was uber-blockbuster level.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
Stallone's most recent film vs. Johnny Depp's most recent.
Grudge Match grossed $29.8m. Transcendence, the big summer Depp blockbuster, grossed $23m.
Stallone is not a box office draw now at all, so what does that make Depp? Seriously, I know this is a Stallone thread, but Depp on his own is just not a draw at all. The last three movies that were solely reliant on his star power have bombed: Transcendence, The Libertine, and The Rum Diary. All of his others have had other reasons for their inflated grosses. The Lone Ranger (Disney blockbuster + cultural significance), Dark Shadows (Burton), On Stranger Tides (Disney + franchise), Rango (animated), The Tourist (Jolie), Alice in Wonderland (3D and Burton), Public Enemies (Mann + historical significance), Sweeney Todd (musical + known entity), At World's End and Dead Man's Chest (Disney + franchise). Most of those were also back when Depp was liked more, before he got type-cast to the max., so even though the films had other reasons for their success, it was also because Depp was "hot" at that moment, but he still couldn't get Sweeney Todd above $55m and The Libertine above $20m, and The Lone Ranger, such a huge production with a great summer slot, only gets $89m.
Depp never had longevity like Stallone. Let's see if Depp can make a resurgence like Stallone has so many times before.

To be fair to Depp, he was hardly advertised in Transcendence... because he was a computer.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
Depp has no longevity? He's been star for 30 years, and already had a comeback in the late 90s until 3 years ago. Not bad for a guy who started in a horror movie and starred in Teen TV Show.
Main difference between Depp and Stallone is that Depp has been able to reinvent his image multiple time. Stallone does exactly the same thing he has always done, except now he always relies on Nostalgia. Not a bad technique as it definitely helped. But after EX3 he really needs to do something else. He won't be able to carry an action film or really any film on his own past 15 million again.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
His last 6 non franchise films, or no other nostalgia aspects have been:
Bullet to the Head- 9.5 million total Shade- 25 thousand total Eye See You- 80 thousand total Avenging Angelo- 825 thousand total Driven- 32.7 million Get Carter- 14 million
Their budgets combined were 304 million. They've grossed 57 million combined in the US. That is atrocious. He needs to move on to supporting work and try new types of roles.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
Umm, Get Carter was a remake. That's certainly a nostalgic aspect.
But I agree, for the 567th time you've said it, he needs to take on supporting roles where he can create a likable and humble persona like Ford and De Niro have done in their later years.

Well, it's not like De Niro's career is going all that well when he is not starring in a David O. Russell film.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
He's doing better off than Pacino at least, I don't think I've liked a single film of his since Insomnia (Some decent TV work though) At least De Niro is still having some decent roles, but having fun like in Last Vegas, Stardust, Machete, etc.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
Cobra had more successes in Taiwan and Hong Kong. In Taiwan, it had the highest opening day gross in Taiwan box office history. In Hong Kong, it had the highest opening weekend in HK box office history, and the highest opening day, Saturday and Sunday in HK box office history. A MEGA HIT. And for a R-rated film (probably a category III)....astonishing. Cobra is such an interesting film to research because of its R certificate and the fact that it came after Rambo First Blood Part II and Rocky IV (two uber-blockbusters) and before Over the Top (a disappointment). Here's an advertisement from its US release:

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
Another record that Cobra achieved: the widest release for a film ever at 2,131 theatres. It beat Rambo: First Blood Part II's 2,074 theatre count from a year earlier. All the theatres wanted Stallone. Also, if it weren't for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Cobra would have had the highest-grossing opening weekend of 1986. It settled for second place.

I was quite amazed how in Germany, Cliffhanger stayed in the Top 5 for 7 weeks! The first three at #1.

Re: Stallone was a mega box office star
I cannot pinpoint when exactly it was, but I have done research and narrowed it down to when I was either 7 or 8, which was 1993.
