Yes, I've said it multiple times, Stallone was a mega box office star. Does that help?

I have an entire thread for the Stallone 85, its up there with Jim Carrey 94 or Ben Stiller 04, even more so because of the international success. You're just not adding anything to the conversation.

If you want to point out he had a great early 80s, than fine. End of discussion

It seems that Algren didn't create this thread for discussion but for others to agree on the success of Stallone's past.

It's more of a nostalgic look back on just how successful her was. Most people forget (or didn't know in the first place), and there is something great about looking at data in a different way or comparing it to modern data and extracting conclusions.

So there's more that can be done than just agree that Stallone was successful.

No need to worry, you're not the only one that thinks Stallone 85 was superb. I mean Rambo II is still one of top R rated films and Rocky IV held the non summer record for a while. It's just not hard to discount with your earlier thread option. There is a lot to debate from what you said.

I'm attempting to find a record that a Stallone movie still holds. So far, I am not even close. Getting inside the Top 10 might be a start:

15th most attended R-rated film in the US: Rambo First Blood Part II

Ah ha!..

Most attended boxing movie ever: Rocky
2nd most attended boxing movie ever: Rocky III
3rd most attended boxing movie ever: Rocky IV
4th most attended boxing movie ever: Rocky II

And more..

Highest-grossing boxing movie ever: Rocky IV
2nd highest-grossing boxing movie ever: Rocky III
3rd highest-grossing boxing movie ever: Rocky

More..

Most attended sports movie ever: Rocky
2nd most attended sports movie ever: Rocky III
3rd most attended sports movie ever: Rocky IV

But not much for the other films of his..

On August 18th, 1985, Rambo First Blood Part II was the 3rd highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time, behind only The Exorcist and Beverly Hills Cop. That kind of just proves that it was a mega-smash hit.

I think he is also the only actor to make 20 million for a film to gross under 100K, Eye See you.

Ha! Yes, you just cannot stop with the negativity. I'm surprised you didn't reel off all the Razzie records he won.

D-Tox grossed much more than $100k, anyway. It made around $7m at the box office, then a further $18m on rental.

Only 80k in the US though. Such a terrible release of that film. I understand Avenging Angelo, but not this one Never made any sense to me how you can spend 55 million on a film with a pretty big cast, and even have Ron Howard come in and direct reshoots for it, and it still get dumped. It's a solid if unspectacular film too. Stallone has done much worse, and certainly less marketable films.

In all honesty Stallone is super lucky he went DTV when he did with those, and was able to bounce back. If someone asked me 10 years ago whether I thought Stallone or Nicolas Cage was more consistently in theaters, you would have had to say Cage. Another reason I'm not sure why he turned down an Expendables role. Granted it wouldn't have helped his career, but obviously he is doing anything for 2-3 million now, and that would have been probably no more than 5 days work.

Yes, D-Tox was just dumped. It fell to Sly himself to put up the money and organise a small release. It could have easily made $15m or $20m at the US box office. I mean, worse films have made much more!

I didn't know that Ron Howard did re-shoots, so thanks for that info. Is it really true?

Because movies earn money based on their quality.

I actually think a well marketed ensemble thriller with Stallone and semi horror could have sold pretty well to an audience. The film didn't even get a theatrical trailer or any promotional material. Had it been marketed well enough, I think it could have done 30-45 in the US and another 50-70 internationally. DEJ studios is a shit studio, once they couldn't get a distributer they were screwed.

Dr. Lecter, can you shed some insight into Stallone's popularity in Germany over the years, especially in the 80s?

I wasn't even in Germany until the 90s, I think Mark is a far better person to ask. I can tell you that Stallone was absolutely huge in Russia. I could also tell you that no one gives a fuck about Stallone here nowadays. Even those who grew up with his films, the somewhat older generation than mine, pretty much gave up on him now. Similar to Arnie. Whenever I mention that there is a new Sly or Arnie (or Sly/Arnie) film is coming, they are considered a laughing stock. The Expendables films are an exception because of their event-feeling, but also because Jason Statham is actually pretty popular here. Tranporter 3, for instance, had more admissions than both The Expendables films (albeit also a milder rating, admittedly). Crank 2, however, which flopped in the US and almost everywhere else and had the highest rating here, still had more admissions than Bullet to the Head, Escape Plan, Grudge Match and The Last Stand combined. So, yeah, Statham is one of the biggest The Expendales draws over here. And, as I said, the event feeling of this. Even though they are not DTV, Arnie and Sly are commonly assicoated with DTV actors here nowadays. For further insight - Mark.

Would you know where to get any data for RUSSIA during the 1980s or 1990s? If Stallone was huge there, I'd like to be able to back it up data. Is it possible? Is anything known? or was it too dodgy back then?

I know Rocky IV was banned in parts of Russia. I remember when I was in college I worked with this guy from Russia, and he loved the Rocky films, all 4 of them. When I brought up Ivan Drago, he had no idea what I was talking about. I showed him the film, and he loved it, but he said now way that would fly at the time.

I would assume Rambo II and III especially would have been banned as well. Considering Rocky and Rambo were the only films of his that did really big numbers OS for him at the time, I'm not sure they would have done that good. Do you have international data for Cobra or Tango and Cash?

I agree that should have been a franchise. Russell and Stallone got along quite well too. There are some great old interviews of the two of them, and Stallone gave Russell George Cosmatos so he could direct Tombstone like Stallone directed First Blood part II.
