I would have to say that The Ring Two takes the cake for me. I was expecting so much more from this. Judging from the trailier this movie looked bound to become a hit, and make even more than the original, but it feel flat, and won't even make $80 million now, and it surprised me tremendously. I was expecting $150 million for this. The marketing was great, but the reviews were horrid. I don't know if those contributed to its not doing well though. I think it had more to do with terrible word of mouth, and not very strong buzz.

Sin City would be second. At first I was fearing this would fall into the same trap as Sky Captain did, but it surprised, and now it will become very profitable for Miramax, and I'm proud. I was predicting $23 million opening weekend, but that was just wishful thinking. I didn't even expect it to hit $20 million, but thankfully it did. It looked a lot more interesting and entertaining than Sky Captain, and it had an amazing cast, and a well known director, so that's why I think it was successful. It also had very strong marketing. I'm just so glad this surprised. Maybe Hollywood will start making more movies like this that are different, and original. It is definitely something I would like to see more often.

Well so far 05' didnt have many surprises imo, so those two would be in the top and I guess Pacifier hitting the 100m mark. I have a feeling Summer will have some big surprises though.

I never would've thought for the life of me that Vin Diesel could carry a comedy.. I suppose it was alot like Kindergarten Cop with Schwartzenegger and how that did.. :-k

There's no real surprises yet. No big ones. A few little eye-catchers here and there, like The Ring Two failing to cross $100M, Are We There Yet? passing $80M off of a $18M weekend, and Hitch's amazing final gross (that's not even done yet).

The biggest surprise for me?

Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

I saw absolutely no marketing for it, nor heard a bit of buzz. Who knew that a movie with such low-key marketing and no stars could open like that.

I had heard the buzz rumbling, but I'd easily agree that this should take the cake. Everyone was expecting Cursed to be #1, if not Constantine/Hitch again, but this came out of nowhere. Second would be The Ring Two doing so badly, even now I think it could've done much better with a different release date. Are We There Yet, Hostage, and Hitch's huge legs (in Hitch's case total moreso) would be the runner ups for me. And though I had called it, most people were probably surprised by Guess Who beating Miss Congeniality 2 so much.

yea by and far the biggest suprise was Mad Black Woman, but honestly from working in a theatre this year my biggest suprises have to be how well some of the below par kids movies have done, Winn-Dixie, Racing Stripes, Are we there yet etc etc etc... they all held on alot longer than I ever would have guessed

The biggest surprise was the string of successes by films featuring black actors this late winter and spring. It's a change, it wasn't long ago that such things were few and far between. But this year already we had

Are We There Yet
Diary of a Mad Black Woman
Guess Who
Coach Carter
Hitch

Most of those opened at number 1 on their weekend. Looking at them individually we can say they weren't surprises but taking the bigger view it sure is something new.

I don't think Robots disappointed. Many people were predicting it to be the first CGI film flop since Final Fantasy, with a $20 million opening and less than $70 million finish. Even taking into account the fact that studios get around 55% of the movie's gross, Robots has probably made enough worldwide to take care of both its production and marketing budgets. So, Fox probably does not consider this a disappointment.

By many people you mean one person going with 23 million? Dude, everyone was ripping me apart for my 35/110 preidiction, and of course forgot it the weekend after when I messed up The Ring Two... Anyways, I would also list Coach Carter. People were expecting a mid teens opening, not for it to more then double Eletra's opening weekend and more then triple it's total.
