I think Drag me to Hell cost more, plus it came out in the summer.

Drag Me To Hell had more potential than Cabin in the Woods though, not to mention the budget was 30 Million and I assume the budget for Cabin was much smaller. Most did not expect Cabin to do this well and with its poor CinemaScore the legs are a bit surprising. I don't think Drag Me To Hell did bad by any means, it's just unfortunate it didn't do better. I wish we'd get a sequel to that movie.

They actually both cost $30 million. Drag Me to Hell just had much higher expectations, having both a high-profile director, a summer release date and a major studio behind it (Plus a decent horror drought prior to its opening). This had a debut director and had been delayed for ages (For reasons outside of its control admittedly), plus good reviews and "Not your average horror film!" quotes have pretty much conditioned us to expect the worst. Drag Me to Hell probably wasn't as much of a disappointment as we initially perceived it, but this is still a decent success all things considered.

Drag Me To Hell just had such a good release date, marketing, trailer, etc. If I remember correctly, first horror film in a while. And even tracking had it at $30m (right?). So it was just disappointing, but a solid run in the end.

I think the numbers for AVENGERS will be boring. It will open huge and break some records until the next big blockbuster opens. Yawn. I really don't find the performances of these big tent-pole films that interesting personally.

And had more marketing and hype, and was way less weird and niche.
