Re: Is the golden age of sequels coming to an end?
When I made this thread there were a few trends that motivated the idea. I think they are beginning to prove true.
1. Hollywood doesn't have as many sleeper hits to make sequels out of because smaller movies don't have as much of an opportunity to break out with all the franchises. Also potential franchises might never get made in this era because studios are going after established brands. In other words sequels are killing sequels. 2. They are burning through potential franchises and at some point won't have as much source material to start new franchises. 3. Sure they can restart franchises, but as X-Men shows, they often will not reach the same heights. 4. With fewer promising franchises the studios turn to ones that have less potential.

Of movies being released this year that will likely/possibly see another film in the franchise... Bolded titles are likely top 5 of their year...
Underworld Journey to the Center of the Earth Anything to do with Tyler Perry The Hunger Games Clash of the Titans (we'll see how Wrath does) The Avengers (as a whole, as well as sequels to Iron Man and Thor, maybe even Captain America) Snow White and the Huntsman (if this hits big they'll find a way to make sequels) Madagascar Prometheus (Alien prequels) GI Joe (I'm not convinced this is that last one, The Rock has been on fire lately) Spider-Man Ice Age Step Up (domestic is falling, but international is rising, I think this has at least one more left after #4) Bourne Resident Evil Bond Hobbit (though it's two and done)
Not to mention films continuing franchises in 2013 that don't have films in 2012...
Percy Jackson Evil Dead (please let this not suck!) Star Trek Fast and Furious Superman Despicable Me X-Men/Wolverine The Smurfs Riddick
And sequels to hits in 2011 that aren't announced or on the schedule yet...
Bridemaids Hangover Pirates of the Caribbean Transformers Horrible Bosses Planet of the Apes Drive (this would be cool though I don't know if it will happen) Paranormal Activity Puss In Boots Harold and Kumar The Muppets Alvin & the Chipmunks Mission Impossible Sherlock Holmes Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Adventures of TinTin
And there's obviously Avatar as well, which is a few years away.
I'd say sequels are alive and well for a while. I will be keeping my eyes looking for the next big one though. I would like to see a big franchise come along not based on previous material. A lot of these didn't do so well.

I think people are just becoming smarter on what they spend their money on. We are in a digital age, so WOM on something spreads instantly.

If this year so far has been any indication then the audience have started to sense the overload of sequels even if they are not completely rejecting all the sequels.

Naah I think there has been buzz about some of the sequels like IDR for quite sometime but audience really aren't interested in dumped sequels anymore they want to get quality sequels.

Re: Is the golden age of sequels coming to an end?
There are sequels that people want to see and there are sequels people don't want to see. Lately, we've had more of the latter. This has always been the case. In fact, sequels are currently behaving the way they used to prior to the 2000's where sequels often fell short of the original film.
However, it is true that there has been a major change in moviegoing behaviour of late and a key reason is the TV Golden era boom. And more precisely, serialized shows. Audiences wont waste money on needless sequels when they can sit down and binge quality TV in the comfort of their own home. Hence why the bottom has fallen out for mid range films and sequels.
Big must see films will still have an audience (perhaps larger than ever) but the trend is towards fewer but larger hits than days of yore.

This list turned out to have a lot of declines. Edit: heh, quoted it 2 years ago. Well, now even more. Edit edit: a couple hours away from exactly 2 and a half years. Weird.

Surprised we haven't seen sequels to successful hits like District 9, Twins, Step Brothers, Bridesmaids, Wanted, Hitch and Mean Girls

Twins was rumoured for years to be Triplets (third "triplet" was supposed to be Eddie Murphy) but it never happened.

Triplets is still going to happen, and it wasn't even that long ago it was rumoured. Just last year.

Really - I recall it was mooted back in the 90s. I didn't realise it was revived again.

Re: Is the golden age of sequels coming to an end?
Not that I recommend it but I can see Gravity and I am Legend getting the sequel treatment if studios/actors are desperate enough.
