Post Intl. Box-Office Thread
In this thread, which will be updated weekly I will post articles about he international grosses of movies each weekend, much like it happened over at BOM.

Here we go:

With no direct competition in any of its eight opening territories, Shark Tale devoured a fantastic $29,650,419 from 4,157 screens in 25 countries over the weekend, propelling its overall total to $56,175,863.

The United Kingdom was decidedly Shark Tale's top market of the weekend and most likely will be for its entire international run. The DreamWorks' animated hit grossed $13,531,947 from 504 screens including previews ($9,036,122 excluding previews). The start topped both Scooby-Doo (by 68%) and Scooby-Doo 2 (by 108%) as well as A Bug's Life (by 93%), Shrek (by 104%) and Chicken Run (by 142%).

Shark Tale also had humongous starts in France and Germany. France, a traditionally strong market for animated movies, recorded $4,220,073 from 628 screens, which was 3% better than Hercules, 6% better than Toy Story 2 and 24% better than Monsters, Inc. Germany's $3,426,895 from 684 bested Mulan by 7%, A Bug's Life by 8% and Monsters, Inc. by 10%.

In smaller neighboring territories Shark Tale was also potent. Austria had a $501,983 gross from 113 screens while Belgium notched $651,512 from 91
screens. It also opened in Poland with an extraordinary $755,617 from 91 screens and in the Czech Republic/Slovakia with $176,509 from 26 screens.

Shark Tale also enjoyed strong holds in most markets. Spain was off 36% to $1,588,482 in its second week for a $6,125,738 total gross. Mexico fell just 31% to $1,694,978 from 371 screens also in its second week for a $5,106,932 total.

Collateral grabbed six No. 1 debuts over the weekend, including terrific debuts in South Korea, Italy, Australia and Spain. The biggest start came in Italy where the Michael Mann thriller grossed $2,710,036 from just 260 screens. That easily unseated Hero ($1.1 million second weekend, $4 million total) and topped such other Tom Cruise movies as Eyes Wide Shut ($2.5 million from 300) and Vanilla Sky ($2.2 million from 287) openings.

La Mala educación remained in third place in Italy with a second weekend haul of $995,300 (€809,800) from 231 screens, falling just 20% for a $2.9 million (€2.4 million) total. Director Pedro Almodovar's latest openes Stateside on Nov. 19. In Spain, Collateral recorded a $2,183,384 debut from 337 screens, besting The Bourne Supremacy by 16% and Enemy of the State by 9%. South Korea was most surprising, however, with a massive $1,664,988 start from just 141 screens. That was better than Minority Report's $1.2 million and one of the biggest openings for a U.S. movie this year.

In Australia, Collateral was able to keep fellow openers The Notebook and Open Water at bay with a $1,726,542 launch from 233 screens. It has a strong $7,410 per screen average, but wasn't released widely enough to top most Tom Cruise pictures.

Collateral also had two strong No. 1 debuts in Finland and Turkey. Finland registered $128,802 from 30 screens narrowly unseating Home on the Range while Turkey had a $470,854 debut from 150 screens.

Collateral continued to do well in holdovers as well, lead by France's third weekend gross of $1,211,259 from 470 screens for a 19-day total of $7,928,831. It was off 39% from last weekend.

Collateral ended up with a $12,305,376 weekend overall from 2,618 screens in 19 countries, shooting its total to $59,485,867. Still to go for the Tom Cruise-Jamie Foxx vehicle are Scandinavia and Japan, where Cruise has extreme star power.

In addition to Shark Tale and Collateral, DreamWorks kept the money flowing in with The Terminal, which grossed $6,309,495 from 2,006 screens in 29 territories despite only opening in Russia. Its total grew to $83.6 million, exceeding domestic's $77.2 million.

Most impressive was The Terminal's second weekend holds in Austria and Germany. In Austria, it fell only 12% to $377,063 from 76 screens for a 10-day tally of $983,878. In Germany, the Tom Hanks comedy recorded a $2,717,266 weekend gross from 508 screens, which was off only 15%. Its total there grew to $7,117,840.

The Terminal didn't do as well as expected in Russia. Considering the Eastern European heritage of the main character in the movie, it probably could have done much better than its $619,767 debut from 128 screens.

The Terminal still has Japan to look forward to.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse had a solid debut in New Zealand, grossing $256,949 from 42. It also opened in Portugal with $240,999 from 50 screens. It tumbled 48% in the U.K. to $743,759 from 280 screens. Through three weekends, it has amassed just $2,753,471.

White Chicks continued its surprising run overseas with a $4,488,867 weekend gross from 1,649 screens in 20 countries for a $16,380,867 total. The Wayans Bros. comedy had two solid starts in the U.K. and Spain. In the U.K., it grossed $1,581,238 from 326 screens. Spain produced $940,676 from 200. In holdovers, it fell less than 35% in most markets including Mexico's remarkable 5% drop in its fourth weekend to $441,122 from 253 screens and a $2,154,619 total.

Ladder 49 kicked off its international tour in southeast Asia with solid results. In Malaysia, the Joaquin Phoenix-John Travolta drama yielded $152,000 on 30 screens, while in the Philippines it earned $115,000 from 30. It was No. 1 in both markets. Although it was No. 2 in Taiwan, it was much stronger there with $241,000 on 18.

With no openings over the weekend, Wimbledon earned $1,418,620 from holdovers at 677 dates in 6 territories and the international tally rose to $16,035,780. In Australia, it grossed $416,067 at 212 dates, off 48% in its third weekend. It was No. 5 there and the 17-day total stands $3,284,634. There are 47 territories to go, including the Netherlands and Brazil next weekend.

In the U.K., the Shark Tale opening dominated the box office with a 46% market share. Wimbledon moved up to the No. 6 spot ahead of Man on Fire with $813,515 (£475,000) from 357 screens, off 41%. Its 24-day haul there is $11,646,013 (£6.5 million).

The Bourne Supremacy rolled out in to five more territories, including South Africa's $299,100 on 68. The international weekend gross was $1,945,344 at 1,199 dates in 31 territories, which raised the international total to $80,080,743. There are 10 more territories to open, including Germany and Austria next weekend.

Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed finally ended its foreign excursion last weekend in Japan. The picture grossed a solid $577,000 (Â¥63 million) from 214 screens. The international total to date is $95.7 million.

Exorcist: The Beginning grossed $1,055,200 from 489 screens in 13 countries for a total of $3.972 million. It was best in Japan with a solid $561,000 start from 212 screens. In Malaysia, the prequel had a solid third place debut behind openers Ladder 49 and Yesterday Once More. It grossed $96,000 (Ringgit 366,000) from 30 prints. It also opened well in Venezuela, grossing $103,000 (Bolivar 198 million) from 50 prints, which was good enough for second place behind Shark Tale's debut. Its launch was 16% better than The Exorcist: Director's Cut and 35% bigger than Ghost Ship. It also had a No. 1 opening in Bolivia and a No. 2 debut in Uruguay.

Before Sunset excelled in art house theaters across the globe. In Hong Kong, it grossed $21,700 (HK$169,000) from just 2 prints. Although it ranked eighth, it was No. 1 in per screen average of all opening U.S. movies, including Fahrenheit 9/11 (by 18%). The debut was also 118% better than Frida and 78% better than Nowhere in Africa. In Greece, it was even better with a $92,000 (€74,300) debut from 4 prints. The international total is $6.3 million.

Warner Brothers had several pictures that continued to have decent overseas runs. A Cinderella Story grossed $830,500 over the weekend from 935 screens in 15 countries for a $17.6 million total. Laura's Stern hauled in $814,100 from Germany, Austria and Switzerland for a $5.7 million total. Catwoman grossed $330,500 from 427 screens in 27 countries for a $35.4 million total. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban improved its international total to $539 million while Troy inched its total up to $363.2 million.

Saw continued to show strength in the U.K. with a $1.5 million third outing, off just 15%. The thriller's new total is $8.1 million. It opens domestically on Oct. 29.

Man on Fire grossed $4 million on 1,390 screens for $28.9 million, fuelled by two top 10 debuts and a strong hold in Europe. The picture opened seventh in France with $1.1 million on 340 and second in Belgium with $305,000 on 41. It added $967,000 in its second weekend in Spain on 301 screens and ranked third for a $3.9 million total there.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story added $1.8 million on 1,546 screens for $45.4 million, highlighted by Taiwan's debut of $301,000 on 72. Fellow Fox release Garfield had a solid $404,000 launch in Thailand from 155 screens, contributing to a $1.4 million weekend on 1,066 screens for a $114.1 million total.

I, Robot remained in pole position in Japan for the fifth weekend in a row with $1.3 million from 359 screens and $29 million to date. Overall, it added $1.6 million on 616 screens for a $187 million total.

Shaun of the Dead held strong in its second weekend in Australia. The weekend gross was $245,101 at 120 dates, off 34%. It was No. 8 in the marketplace and the 11-day cume is $773,864. UIP has released Shaun in three other countries (U.K., Belgium and Netherlands) and the current total is $13,396,298.

It's amazing how well historical epics like King Arthur doing overseas despite abysmal domestic grosses.

On another note...I, Robot looks like it will hit $350m eventually.

And WOW at SAW. I have seen it and I've gotta say it was pretty amazing!

I was wondering, too. That is REALLY good for I, Robot. I hope the rumored sequel is made. See, this is a movie that deserves a sequel. Not some putrid crap like RE. Ugggh I am so annoyed by crappy movies. *end random rant*

I would love to see an I, Robot sequel (the original is my favorite movie of the year so far)

Oh and Resident Evil movies...I like them, my biggest guilty pleasures.

I guess Zach hates me now...

Shark Tale is cleaning up very nicely overseas just like here. Both Collateral and The Terminal have done very well compared to domestic especially the latter. I Robot should clear 200 mil. soon.

I am sure that they have some kind of vacation. Daniel Raedts who posts on BOM is from there. He might know.

EARLY INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT (YAHOO):

Tom Cruise (news)'s army of admirers turned out for "Collateral" in Japan, and M. Night Shyamalan's fans embraced "The Village" in Italy over the weekend, while indigenous pics "A Very Long Engagement" in France and "Seven Dwarfs" in Germany dominated local biz.

Meantime, "Finding Neverland" and Woody Allen's "Melinda and Melinda" had promising world preems in the U.K. and Spain, respectively.

The only super-wide release that's active internationally, "Shark Tale" reigned for the fourth consecutive weekend, hauling in a projected $15.3 million, propelling its cume to $109.6 million: It's the 20th title to cross $100 million abroad this year.

Buoyed by the school holidays, DreamWorks' toon hooked an estimated $5 million in its third voyage in Blighty, easing by 15%, spurring the territory total to a socko $35.9 million. Wannabe shark slayer surged by 47% in its third in France, minting $4 million, for a local cume of $13.6 million. Based on toon's first-day take in Russia, UIP was projecting a hefty $1 million weekend there.

With Japan, South KoreaScandinavia and Singapore ahead, the fish tale should beat its ultimate domestic tally of around $165 million, according to UIP prexy-chief operating officer Andrew Cripps.

"Collateral" nailed an estimated $4 million on 388 screens in Japan, including $1 million in sneaks, rated as 19% ahead of the bow of Cruise's "Vanilla Sky." Thriller benefited from promo visits to Tokyo by the thesp and helmer Michael Mann, but the beheading of a Japanese hostage in Iraq (news - web sites) may have made sections of the population less receptive to the hit-man saga. However, UIP was confident the pic will be No. 1, ahead of "Be With You," Japanese weepie about a widowed father and son who encounter someone they believe to be their long-dead wife and mom, from the producers of hit "Crying Out for Love, From the Center of the World." "Collateral" gunned down roughly $9.4 million at the weekend, hoisting cume to $84.2 million.

"The Village" rang up a projected $2.4 million in Italy, its last major market. That was no barn-burner, but good enough for No. 1, on par with the debut of Shyamalan's "The Sixth Sense." Suspenser's cume levitated to $136.1 million and the worldwide total hit $250 million.

"Finding Neverland," about how author J.M. Barrie came to write "Peter Pan," whistled up approximately $1.5 million on 310 screens in Blighty, a decent number that's level with the entry of "As Good As It Gets." BVI is confident the Johnny Depp starrer will have legs, thanks to positive reviews and word of mouth.

Launched in Spain after being warmly received at the San Sebastian fest, "Melinda and Melinda" fetched an estimated $885,000 on 155 for 20th Century Fox. Pic starring Radha Mitchell, Will Ferrell and Chloe Sevigny ranked third behind rookie "Exorcist: The Beginning" (which scared up around $1.7 million) and the soph session of local laffer "Ferpect Crime" ; the Allen pic bows Stateside in March.

"Seven Dwarfs," a comic Teutonic riff on the fairy tale, rustled up a projected $11.3 million in Germany, a 53% market share, repping the third biggest debut locally this year behind "(T)Raumschiff Surprise" and "Harry Potter (news - web sites) and the Prisoner of Azkaban." UIP pickup also scored a terrif $900,000 in Austria and $250,000 in Switzerland.

Warners' "A Very Long Engagement" wooed an estimated $8.7 million on 700-plus prints in France, comparable to the bows of "The Matrix," "Unbreakable" and "The World Is Not Enough." World War 1 romance reunites "Amelie" thesp Audrey Tatou and helmer Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

"Alien vs. Predator" swallowed a meaty $3.5 million in France and $350,000 in Holland, but plunged by a worrying 55% in the U.K., where it has pocketed $7.2 million in 10 days. Fox's creature feature has banked a handy $39.4 million, with the rest of Europe to come.

After its debut in Italy didn't meet exhibs' expectations, "I, Robot" fell by an acceptable 37% to $1.3 million, bringing its market tally to $4 million. Sci-fier's estimated cume peaked at $196 million.

The "Alfie" remake starring Jude Law declined by a moderate 28% in the U.K, earning a pleasing $6 million in 10 days.

"Shall We Dance" showed fancy footwork in its soph session in Oz, ranking No. 1 again with $1.2 million (off 24%), bringing the local total to $3.6 million.

Cruise's movies in Japan tend to have great legs. Collateral is a lock for $200+ million worldwide. I'd guess it will make at least $210 million.

I, Robot should cross $350 million soon, I hope. :)

FULL INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND OCTOBER 29-31 REPORT

Local productions dominated the international marketplace last weekend, but thanks to a wider release Shark Tale again grabbed first place.

Un long dimanche de fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement) lived up to expectations in France with the fourth biggest opening weekend of the year. Its estimated $9.7 million (€8.0 million) start from 707 prints was easily good enough for first place. The opening was also the eighth biggest ever for a French movie and the seventh biggest for Warner Bros. The Audrey Tautou drama was 64% ahead of Amélie. It was director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's, who also directed Amélie, biggest opening as well.

The World War II drama also opened in French Switzerland and Belgium. In Switzerland, it placed first with an estimated $235,000 (Franc 281,000) opening from 20 screens. The opening was 37% better than Amélie and 72% better than Cold Mountain. Belgium's estimated $315,000 (€246,000) from 40 screens was No. 1 and was 75% ahead of Amélie and 11% better than Cold Mountain.

Seven Dwarfs (Sieben Zwerge - Männer allein im Wald), a German family comedy that Universal acquired for Germany, Austria and Switzerland surprised with giant starts in all three markets. In Germany, it opened at No. 1 with a stunning $11,321,728 gross from 753 screens. It had a 53% market share and was the third biggest opening of the year there behind (T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1's $15.4 million and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban's $14.8 million as well as Universal's biggest opening of all time there.

In Austria, Seven Dwarfs was No. 1 with a 50% market share and a weekend gross of $1,321,010 at 95 dates. That was the third biggest opening of the year behind (T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1 and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as well as Universal's biggest opening of all time there. In German-Switzerland, Seven Dwarfs grossed $484,079 at 39 dates, which was the second biggest opening of the year behind only (T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1.

Seven Dwarfs' opening weekend total from the three territories is a terrific $13,126,808.

Finding Neverland wasn't very impressive in its U.K. premiere. The drama about J.M. Barrie's experiences during the writing of Peter Pan grossed only $1,426 501 from 325 screens. By comparison, the more family-oriented Peter Pan grossed $2,413,229 from 439 screens back in December of 2003. The Johnny Depp-Kate Winslet drama will have to hope for long legs.

Shark Tale again had strong holds across the globe as well as excellent openings in four markets. Best of all debuts was Russia's $1,414,013 from 180 screens ($1,527,603 including previews). That was 41% better than Finding Nemo, but 29% below Shrek 2. Smaller openings include Hungary's $157,484 on 35, Panama's $53,084 on 19, and Slovenia's $55,821.

The biggest surprise, however, came from France where in a holiday session Shark Tale rose an enormous 93% from the previous weekend to $5,255,337 from 643 screens for a 19-day total of $14,889,322. In the U.K., it fell 39% in its third week to $4,384,299 on 503 screens. That pushed its 17-day tally to $35,229,330. Germany was off 34% in its third week to $1,309,368 on 674 for an 18-day total of $9,006,374.

That stunning French hold and Russian opening helped Shark Tale rise 2% from last weekend's total international weekend gross. The DreamWorks' hit grossed $16,665,219 over the weekend from 4,113 locations in 23 territories for an estimated $111.5 million total.

Collateral wrapped up its international tour in Denmark, Greece and Japan last weekend to excellent results. In Japan, thanks to star Tom Cruise, who's had a string of hits including The Last Samurai ($119.3 million), Minority Report ($40.9 million) and Mission: Impossible 2 ($83.6 million), Collateral had a solid $2,881,575 debut from 287 screens or $3,850,017 including previews. Although that doesn't match M:I 2's $13.1 million start or Minority Report's $6,329,370 debut it was extremely high for a crime thriller. Collateral looks to have long legs and finish north of $15 million.

Collateral also opened in Denmark and Greece where it grossed $212,629 on 40 screens and $392,665 on 46 respectively. Both openings were solid. It held well in other markets too. Spain's 7% third-week increase to $951,149 on 315, which pushed its total to $5.4 million, was the best followed closely by Italy's 4% drop to $1,080,621 from 199 screens, which pushed its total there to $7.1 million.

Overall, Collateral grossed $9,158,134 from 2,509 screens in 25 markets for an estimated $86.5 million total. The picture should top the century mark, but it's not guaranteed.

Alien vs. Predator had an exceptional debut in France, which led to an impressive $6.9 million international weekend gross from 1,780 screens in 18 markets and a $40.5 million overall total. AVP's opening in France was $3.3 million from 568 screens for an unconfirmed top five ranking.

Shall We Dance continued to entertain Australian audiences with a first place, second weekend haul of $1,266,842 from 268 screens, off just 18% for a $3,601,333 total. The movie opened in New Zealand, but wasn't as potent with a $185,433 weekend from 58 screens. With previews its total there grew to $315,854.

The Richard Gere-Jennifer Lopez dance picture was more powerful in Italy with a second place opening of $2.99 million from 406 screens. All told, its international total grew to $7.54 million.

Opening just above Shall We Dance in Italy was The Village, which grossed $3.29 million from 411 screens, which was 12% bigger in local currency than M. Night Shyamlan's The Sixth Sense. That helped push the thriller's total to $136.1 million.

White Chicks had another buoyant session abroad, grossing $3,144,046 from 1,511 screens in 22 markets for a $28,168,178 total. Due to holidays in France, it rose 12% to $737,759 on 196 screens for a $1,710,931 total, but elsewhere holds were mainly higher 25% range.

Woody Allen's critically lauded Melinda and Melinda had solid success in its first territory worldwide, Spain. The comedy featuring Radha Mitchell and Will Farrell opened in fifth place, grossing $961,000 from 155 screens. That is Allen's strongest debut there in recent years besting Anything Else's $514,000 launch from 113 screens and Hollywood Ending's debut of $374,000 from 108.

The Bourne Supremacy had no new openings. It was No. 2 in Germany with a weekend gross of $1,834,935 from 563 screens, off 31% from its opening. The 11-day cume is $5,430,418 or at the same level as The Bourne Identity. Austria grossed $218,244 at 54 dates, off 43% from last week's opening. The 10-day cume is $862,293, which is 25% ahead of The Bourne Identity. Supremacy's international weekend gross was $2,767,788 at 1,050 dates in 20 territories, which raised the total to $90 million. There are 14 territories still to open, including Japan on Feb. 5.

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid inched above the $1 million mark in international receipts thanks to Russia's $464,649 debut from 164 screens ($498,642 with previews). The opening was nothing spectacular, but neither were the movie's expectations. The sequel grossed $1,004,870 from 641 screens in 28 markets over the weekend for a $22,888,357 total.

Exorcist: The Beginning grossed $4.9 million over the Halloween session from 1,456 screens in 20 markets for a $9.4 million total. In Spain, it nabbed a strong No. 1 debut of approximately $2.2 million (€1.7 million) from 292 prints. That was on par with The Ring and 5% better than Ghost Ship. The horror prequel also opened in first place in Mexico, grossing $1.1 million (Peso 12.1 million) from 350 prints. That was 71% better than Ghost Ship and on par with The Ring. In Brazil, it also placed first with $556,000 (Real 1.6 million) from 165 prints. That was 73% better than Ghost Ship and 31% better than Gothika. It wasn't so good in the U.K. where it grossed just $1.1 million (£577,128) from 327 situations.

Before Sunset continued to play well in limited release across the globe. In Brazil, it grossed $44,700 in its opening from 6 screens, which outperformed the original by 262%. In the Philippines the sequel grossed $54,100 from 17 screens in Metro Manila to rank in third place on the chart behind The Grudge and White Chicks.

Holdovers continued to supply solid numbers. In its sophomore session in Argentina, Before Sunset was off just 20% from its opening for a $65,900 (Peso 194,700) weekend gross from 10 screens. That brought its total there to $175,300 (Peso 518,300). In its third week in Hong Kong, the sequel grossed $13,700 (HK$106,000) from just 2 screens for a $70,742 (HK$551,790) total.

The Manchurian Candidate had an O.K. premiere in Australia, grossing $729,000 from 187 screens. The remake placed third behind Shall We Dance and Collateral.

Shrek 2 fell a reasonable 35% in Greece to $225,182 on 80 screens for a two-weekend total of $825,507. Its international total grew to $442.1 million.

The Princess Diaries 2 had a surprisingly strong opening in South Korea, grossing $404,000 on 84 screens, which was the best take for a U.S. production in that market. That helped improve its international total to $19.4 million.

The Terminal grossed $2,331,225 from 1,147 locations in 18 markets for an $86.75 million total. It was attributed mainly to Germany's fourth week haul of $1,244,942 from 493 screens for a $11.6 million total. It was off 28%.

I, Robot moved up to $196 million in international receipts after a $1.9 million weekend.

Catwoman grossed $815,600 over the weekend from 368 screens in 17 countries for a $36.6 million, while Scooby-Doo 2 improved its total to $97 million and Troy grew to $363.3 million.

Furthermore, Resident Evil: Apocalypse's international cume has reached $54,163,456.

Im very happy about this, one, to see Catwoman back on the report ;) and two, to see Troy still making money around the globe

I feel that Catwoman can get to $80 Million, Troy is pretty much dead, but its run has been spectacular ;)

Well, Catwoman has around $77 million worldwide. I think it will eventually get released in Japan, so breaking $80 million won't be much of a problem.

I have to say that Alien vs. Predator is doing REALLY well. It has already outgrossed Freddy vs. Jason worldwide and its international gross might even beat its domestic one with countries like Japan and Germany still ahead. I project a worldwide gross of around $190 million.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse seems to be in track to make around $120 million worldwide.

Shark Tale is doing incredibly well overseas. It will make over $385 million worldwide.
