I see something like 1.3-1.4m OW/4-4.2m total. _________________________________________ I'm not one to wish ill on a good film but I sincerely hope Cold War 2 loses badly to either Finding Dory or Star Trek 3 this weekend. The ambivalence shown by Broadway/AMC is disgusting. They've still got Cold War 2 on 4 screens and Star Trek 3 is left on the smallest screen or not showing at all. Finding Dory has no 7 PM showtime even though it has performed very well at that time slot. Of all the films they are showing (besides Cold War 2), they've opted to show Ghostbusters on the bigger screen because it has zero chance of becoming #1 this weekend. Delaying the schedule when it was supposed to come out yesterday evening is another reason why I want Cold War 2 to lose this weekend. I have no idea why UA are giving Cold War 2 more showtimes on Thursday. Star Trek 3 is either showing on regular theaters or IMAX and with only 5-6 showtimes. Ghostbusters is on 3-4 showtimes. Finding Dory has moved into a smaller theater. MCL seems to have their head screwed on right. Star Trek 3 leads here with Finding Dory behind on the 2nd biggest screen. Cold War 2 is on the 3rd biggest screen and Ghostbusters is at the back of the pack. GH has gone for Finding Dory with it leading the rest of the field. Cold War 2 has the 2nd biggest screen and Star Trek 3 is in 3rd. |

Finding Dory still leads Cold War 2 by 6,000 admissions at 3 PM. Cold War 2 won't be able to pass Finding Dory by day's end. Star Trek 3 is in front of Ghostbusters by 2,000 admissions. This battle will come down to the wire. |

I think theaters should have been more proactive and given Finding Dory 2 screens on opening day (Broadway/AMC notwithstanding). Broadway/AMC isn't free from criticism either. Finding Dory should have had full day showtimes this week including 7-10 pm at all of its theaters. Instead, over 60% of B/AMC theaters do not have the #1 film showing at 7 pm even though it played well at 7 PM last week and they know how well it is doing at other theater chains. Imagine if 60% of your own country's biggest theater chain decided to exclude the primetime slot for your #1 movie on purpose to show their own film. I wonder if EDKO is pissed off at Disney for Star Wars 7 doing so poorly in many of its theaters because I did not see this level of meddling and obstruction last year with Inside Out. When you look at the top 10 animated lists and see Minions at #2 clearing 10m and Monsters University right there at 9.97m, there is only one reason why. Broadway/AMC. For a little refresher, Monsters University came out in the summer of 2013 with the exact same release week as Finding Dory: 2nd week of July. The problem was that B/AMC scheduled their own film to open the same day as MU and they scheduled their own film on the biggest screen thereby stopping Monsters University from making extra money. Cold War 2 really surprised but there was no reason to put it on 5 screens on Finding Dory's opening weekend and really no reason to put it on 4 screens this week and give the other night time screenings to Ghostbusters. Some theaters didn't even bother to show Star Trek 3 this weekend when every theater showed Star Trek 2. Finding Dory is in the top 10 animated releases of all time after Sunday. It will reach #9 above Toy Story 2. I think 7m is still happening but just barely. If it can hold extremely well next weekend when Ice Age 5/Jason Bourne open then it has a fighting chance to bank 8m. Cold War 2 will join the top 5 local films of all time on Sunday and by next week will be the new leader for the biggest Chinese language film of all time. Star Trek Beyond and Ghostbusters have been flip flopping but Star Trek 3 has the edge with Ghostbusters showing some cracks and Star Trek 3 in IMAX. Central Intelligence pips Me Before You for #5 with Me Before You losing because of its Sunday. This will come down to the final admissions today. |

Finding Dory walk-ins: 9,500 this Sunday vs. 11,900 last Sunday Cold War 2 walk-ins: 14,100 this Sunday vs. 23,000 last Sunday You can see that Finding Dory has closed the gap in walk-ins from 11,000 admissions last Sunday to less than 5,000 today. Cold War 2 actually had better walk-ins today than the rest of the weekend. Poor increase for Ghostbusters. It is playing like a family friendly film but only posted a 1% increase today. Star Trek 3 held up decently considering action films are usually the films to decrease on a Sunday. Central Intelligence didn't falter as much as Me Before You and that will be enough to land it inside the top 5. The Secret Life of Pets had another very solid hold.

Projected grosses after 7/24: Finding Dory - $4,639,497 in 11 days Cold War 2 - $7,423,196 in 17 days Ghostbusters - $734,587 (opening weekend projection) Star Trek 3 - $644,374 (opening weekend projection) I still feel Ghostbusters is being overestimated while Star Trek 3 is being underestimated. Some Broadway/AMC have added more showtimes for Finding Dory this week but the damage has already been done. Broadway/AMC theaters will likely remove Finding Dory showtimes for Ice Age 5/Jason Bourne and Cold War 2 showings. |

Cold War 2 actual - $7,428,906
Early Thursday schedules These schedules will change with League of Gods premiering on Friday. Broadway/AMC: Cold War 2 is still on full day showtimes or 2 screens. Jason Bourne is either on the biggest screen or 2nd. Ice Age 5 is on the biggest or 3rd biggest screen. Theaters are split on Finding Dory. Half of the theaters so far upgraded Finding Dory to the biggest screen with almost full day showtimes but the other half has downsized to 1-3 showtimes. The theaters that have downsized Finding Dory have gifted Finding Dory's Wednesday screen to Ice Age 5. MCL: Ice Age 5 is getting the biggest screen at most places and it will split the biggest screen with Jason Bourne. Support for the two openers is strong here. Finding Dory is given a reprieve with 5-6 showtimes available on Thursday. Cold War 2 has seen its showtimes slashed to 1-3 only. Golden Harvest: Ice Age 5 nabs the biggest screen here while Jason Bourne pops onto the scene with the 3rd biggest screen. Finding Dory is left with the 2nd biggest screen with about 5-7 showtimes. Cold War 2 is given only half day showtimes. |

UA is not playing around. They are going around with a combination of Jason Bourne, Ice Age 5 and If Cats Disappeared From the World. Star Trek Beyond is the fourth wheel here. Holdovers: Ghostbusters: 2-4 showtimes Finding Dory: 2-4 showtimes Cold War 2: 1-3 showtimes Central Intelligence/Me Before You: Almost gone Secret Life of Pets: Gone |

Expected top 4 this weekend 1. Jason Bourne 2. Ice Age 5/Finding Dory 3. Finding Dory/Ice Age 5 4. Cold War 2 Interestingly, Jason Bourne is showing in 3D at select locations. Ice Age 5 might be looking at a disappointing opening weekend but it has the edge in showtimes and screens. Finding Dory has looked the best out of any film at a number of locations but the low showtimes count will hurt it. It might be able to pass Ice Age 5 for #2. Cold War 2 is on its last legs but will pass 8m by the end of this weekend. |

With League of Gods premiering on Friday, holdovers will get slashed once again. Cold War 2 will leave some UA theaters on Thursday. Finding Dory loses the 8 PM showtime that it had on Thursday at Broadway/AMC. Other holdovers loses 1 or 2 showtimes at other theater chains. |

I was surprised to see Central Intelligence so packed yesterday. I mean, I guess it is the school holidays (even though I had this disgusting old man next to me that had foul 'China Breath' and was eating nuts from the first minute to the last [I had to move]). I went to UA MegaBox. They have air conditioning issues, but their hot dogs are rather nice. The same cannot be said of MCL Telford's hot dogs. Not bad, but not delicious (though, they are probably hotter than the Sun). I went to see Ghostbusters there, in a larger auditorium. Not packed, obviously, but well attended, and the AC was fine. I honestly don't understand cinemas in hot climates. Why ramp up the AC to almost freezing when people will obviously be wearing shorts and T-shirts???!! They must have had it on 16 or 17 degrees when it only needed to be on 25 or just enough to take the edge off the humidity, NOT to keep yoghurts fresh. |

They crank up the AC because it is hot outside and they want to cool people down and they set it with a full house in mind because of the amount of body heat that is given off. |

No shit why they do it, but there's no fucking need. It's hot outside, but the cinema is well inside the shopping mall (on the 11th floor). If you're not cooled down enough by the AC from the shopping mall, then you've got biological problems that AC at 16 degrees will not fix. It is simply too low. It does not need to be at that temperature for 2 hours. We're just sitting there. We're not doing sit ups. It could be turned off after 30 minutes of the movie has gone and nobody would care. For some reason, old people in Hong Kong wear jackets and trousers even in mid-summer when it's 35 degrees and humid as fuck, so for those old bastards the AC won't be an issue. But for the rest of us, we're fucked. |

Why don't you bring a jacket next time then? Or ask for a blanket. |

Why would I carry a jacket when outside is 35 degrees? Nah. They should just learn how to operate an air conditioner. |

I bought a sweater in Marks and Spencer about two years ago when I was in Hong Kong planning to go to the cinema a few times. So I know it's a problem with HK cinemas. It's just not something you think to bring when you plan a trip to HK to watch a few movies. |

4 PM Update: Jason Bourne and Ice Age 5 have pulled away from the rest of the films. Jason Bourne so far has reigned in a 4.0 from users but Ice Age 5 has started off with a stellar 4.8/5 from moviegoers. Time will tell if this word of mouth will bring in more viewers for Ice Age 5 and whether it affects Finding Dory this weekend. Finding Dory is entrenched at #3 while Star Trek 3 still leads over Cold War 2 in admissions for #4. |

__________________________________________________ A typhoon will directly hit Hong Kong on Tuesday with howling winds and squally rain expected. T1 will be issued tonight at the earliest. It is unknown how this affects ticket sales on Tuesday. In past years, a typhoon that wasn't a direct hit but still necessitated a No. 8 signal increased ticket sales significantly on that day essentially making it an extra holiday. A direct hit, however, could see ticket sales drop on Tuesday possibly as transportation won't be running. |
