Post Re: Average ticket prices
My local theatres went through a phase of sloppy management in the early 2000's, but got their act together and tightened up the technical side now to the point where a minor glitch is a very rare exception.

To hear you guys talk, I guess I must be living in Movie Heaven!

(I do count my blessings - - frequently and with gratitude.)

I still love and believe in the theatrical experience, and I'm always so excited for movies. I'm sure when I buy Never Let Me Go on Blu-ray, the picture and audio will be sharper, more dynamic, etc. than any of the three times I saw the film in theatres, but I'm still glad I saw it on the big screen with an audience multiple times, and felt transported each time. So it's this frustrating give-and-take...but I won't give up on the theatrical experience the way others seem content to.

I'm with you 100% on this point!

Post Re: Average ticket prices
The official NATO numbers for 2010 are here:

Average Movie Ticket Price for 2010 Was $7.89

The average cost jumped to $8.01 in the fourth quarter due to the premium price of 3D tickets.
The average movie ticket price for 2010 ended up being $7.89, after the average cost jumped to $8.01 in the fourth quarter.

It was the first time that the cost of admission ever jumped the $8 mark.

The National Assn. of Theater Owners calculates the yearly ticket price based on the quarter averages. The average cost in the first quarter of 2010 was $7.95, but dipped to $7.88 in the second, and $7.71 in the third.

The average ticket price in 2009 was $7.50. Year-over-year, the 2010 average price of $7.89 represented a 5.2% increase.

Helping to drive the higher cost were 3D films, which charge a premium.

Over the past five years, ticket prices have consistently been up 4% to 5% year-over-year.

Are you serious? No wonder people are becoming more selective. No way I'd pay those premiums for most films.

Yeah, I do the morning shows for most movies now.

I don't have that morning option in my area, so I pretty much skipped the whole spring.
My movie season started yesterday when I saw Fast Five. Thor is Thursday night, and I'll also definitely see Pirates 4, Hangover 2, X-Men, Captain America, Transformers and Harry Potter. Movies I would have seen in a heartbeat in previous years now become bubble movies, only seen if I have the time or money... Super 8, Green Lantern, Cars 2, Cowboys & Aliens, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, along with many smaller films.

So with a lot of IMAX and 3D movies coming out in Summer are the average admissions pirces expected to go above $8 again ? Plus in April we had Rio and F5 (at the end but still OD was a big chunk I believe)

F5 wasn't 3D.

You have Thor, Priest (negligible), Pirates, Panda, Cars and Green Lantern in the next quarter.

After that Transformers, Captain America, Smurfs, Potter and a whole slew of mid-range crap.

We'll see how the audience responds.

Transformers & Harry Potter are the only films this year I'd pay to see in IMAX 3D.
That's over $30 for 2 movies. Unbelievable!!!

I am not sure if that is true....I checked their website and saw that it is still playing a quite a few places, all of which I assume will be house full (still though it did loose a lot this week)

The 3D films this summer will cause average ticket prices to skyrocket.

If 3D and IMAX do inflate this number (highly) then I think we can see that number as high as $8.1 (the last record was $8.01)

Is it valid to assume the average 3D ticket is about 1.4x the average non-3D ticket price?

If so, for opening weekend 1st Q 2011 (based on above), I get approx.
$7.59 ave non 3D ticket price
$10.63 ave 3D ticket price

Is there better data available?

Those numbers aren't a big surprise imo. It could have been more especially for movies like TF3 and DH2

That does not sound really big...we have DH2 and a lot of August movies in 3rd quarter right?
I seriously doubt that this is a correct number.

The fact that it didn't pass $8 average makes 2011 admissions look slightly less worse.
