Well Avatar, Alice and Clash comprised almost $1 Billion domestic so far this year, thats a big chunk of the movie going audience. I suspect with more upcoming 3D pics, $8.00 is about right. Will see just as big a jump next year too. |

You're right, forgot about DRAGON which had only 6 days in March, than came CLASH Apri 2nd... On the other hand TS3 will have "only" 13 days in the 2nd quarter (but that's probably worth $200m)... |

If this is truly the average, then 3D prices will be included as well. Considering that Alice/HTTYD/Avatar had maybe 70% of their gross in 3D and Clash had around 55%, $200m of the $752m gross was 3D. If 3D prices are $3 greater than 2D, then that would give a 2D/3D average price of $7.34/$10.34. |

Looking at number of 3d films and huge grosses made by them, I am finding it hard to believe 3D just added 10c to average ticket price. That just is not possible as 3D grosses alone would be excess of 1B which would be quite significant. |

Even in Los Angeles you can go the movies for $3 in Dollar Houses like this one: http://www.mrmovietimes.com/movie-theat ... mas-5.html But there are many more, just look at this SoCal list: http://www.family-vacation-getaways-at- ... tions.html Sometimes when I wanted to catch up with an older movie, I went to a Dollar House and it was always pretty packed - but the theaters are usually very rundown... |

The turnout has been pretty good, with people checking out a movie that may not have paid $6-7 for. |

Tickets here in VA are an outrageous $10 for a regular show and $5 for matinees. 3D is an extra $3, IMAX an extra $4. I'm glad we haven't reached the $20+ ticket price that NYC has, but it's still frakking ridiculous. |

According to the National Association of Theater Owners, the average domestic admissions price averaged $7.71 in the third quarter, a 2 percent drop from the $7.88 reported in Q2 and 3 percent decline from the record-high $7.95 tallied in Q1. Outrageous?!? Movies are the cheapest going-out entertainment activity available! Compare them to concerts, bars, plays, sporting events, museums, trade shows... whatever - - there's nothing cheaper than movies. Not only that, the quality of presentation, sound and picture technology, and the comfort of auditoriums has been continuously getting better and better since the 90's - - we are in a new golden age of big screen movies! I love going to the movies!!! |

Its been months now since I haven't had at least one asshole who comments continuously during the movie or pulls out his/her phone to text. |

I guess I have it lucky, because audiences in the theatres I go to are almost universally respectful, except when they're appropriately rowdy at a comedy of action film. Maybe 1 out of 20 movies I go to has a problem individual who I have to speak to, but for the most part I accept brief and minor intrusions as simply part of the show, part of being a social animal doing a group activity. Perhaps you need to move to a better neighborhood? |

While I have been in my share of disrespectful and loud audiences (The Village on opening night in 2004 is the winner in this regard), what I find troubling is how frequent bad projection/sound/general-tech-problems have become. And I don't go to a hole-in-the-wall theatre. But people are sheep and don't seem to notice such technical issues. For example, when I saw Hereafter for the first time (I've since seen it again), the lights never went out. During the trailers, I thought, "Oh, they'll go out once the film begins." But then there's the Warner Bros. logo, the opening shot, etc., and the lights are still on. Now, I hate missing any of a movie, but I decided to run out and tell the popcorn person. So around three mintues later, during the big tsunami sequence, the lights go out. On my way out, though, I noted everyone else (the crowd was rather large) was just watching the film with the lights on without, it seemed, a care in the world. I have no doubt they would have watched the entire movie with the house lights on full tilt. When I saw (500) Days of Summer on a Friday night with a sold out crowd last year, the entire sound mix seemed to be coming out of one speaker. Everything sounded so small and mechanical, and one had to strain to hear the dialogue. I complained, and then the projectionist flipped a switch, I s'pose, and the sound became loud and full. But, yet again, I didn't see anyone else moving as I went towards the exit, nor were there any arms in the air in disgust at how poor the sound was. I'm not sure: am I just too anal? Is it cool in the 2000s to pay $10+ to watch a film in a theatre with the house lights on, the sound way too low, part of the bottom of the image projected at the top of the screen, etc.? I've almost accepted the fact films often seem to be projected via Shrek's swamp so projector bulbs last longer... But at least give me a focused, steady image within the frame and crisp, loud sound. My favorite movie blogger, Jeffrey Wells, does stories of this type now and then, and I'm always glad to see others have noticed the oft piss poor A/V quality at major theatres. I remember he attended a screening of The American (A.O. Scott was also in attendance) where the sound was so low Clooney's dialogue was fighting a losing war with the theatre's A.C. A natural response to this rant is often, "Just wait four or five months, and then you can watch the movie on Blu-ray on the widescreen TV." But I just can't do it.  I still love and believe in the theatrical experience, and I'm always so excited for movies. I'm sure when I buy Never Let Me Go on Blu-ray, the picture and audio will be sharper, more dynamic, etc. than any of the three times I saw the film in theatres, but I'm still glad I saw it on the big screen with an audience multiple times, and felt transported each time. So it's this frustrating give-and-take...but I won't give up on the theatrical experience the way others seem content to.
