Ant-man is at 8.8 currently

And well, for me it would be hard to talk about any correlation based on math, but naturally a better received/ reviewed film has usually better legs.

This is the poster for Hong Kong. Is it going for scary? because I want to laugh when I look at it.

Strange posters for predator if that’s what that is

Yes, it's Chinese posters for The Predator. They've gone for that whole localization thing, and it may work, but for me it looks like a complete fail. Then again, China doesn't have the association and relationship with Predator or Alien like the west does. It's new to them.

It looks nothing like Robin Hood, good for it that it's getting a China release it will need every overseas gross it can get.

I don't know. It looks more like Robin Hood than some of its US posters. But it isn't a great poster. A bit meh for me. Weird considering Chinese prefer white faces that they chose to hide the white man's face but show the black one.

Yeah, I don't expect it to do that well here. $50m should be no problem, but anything more I'm also really not sure.

Funny that Escape Plan 2: Hades has grossed more than Smallfoot and The Spy Who Dumped Me combined.

The Predator hasn't done all that well here, but then hopefully nobody expected it to. It has made $14 million in two days. Opening weekend should be just above $20 million.

The Hurricane Heist overtook Nutcracker and the Four Realms on Monday and Tuesday after N4R won the weekend. I am surprised that Hurricane Heist even got released here, though I suppose it is the type of shoddy film that you'd expect could find an audience. Still, it's not cleared $10m yet. This really is the box office doldrums. Venom opens Friday and perhaps it will pick up.

Venom made a whopping $31m first day, and it has a 9.4 on dianping. Could defy usual superhero crap and go above $130m total. Let's see how the rest of the weekend unfolds.

I don't, but if you think I do then it's because I've lived in China for 6 years.

Venom had a $44m second day. Total now at $78m.

It looks like it will overtake the total grosses of most superhero films within 3 days.

Venom's total so far is $110m.

So why did venom become a smash ? I can’t imagine the Chinese are all that familiar with venom vs other superheroes so what was it’s secret if any.

Was talking about this with stuffp earlier, and I really don't know why it hit the ground running. The Chinese market is often so hard to read. Spider-Man movies have never done gangbusters here. I think Venom being the first big Hollywood movie in a while is a factor, and that there were tons of showtimes (like, every half-an-hour on the weekend), but in terms of the subject matter I really have no idea. There are some nice Chinese-only movie posters for it, but I can't imagine that made much of a difference. Who knows. Perhaps Venom is a very popular comic here in China. But I just can't see that being the case. Or maybe there is no logic to follow here. Maybe it just looked cool and action-packed and with a bit of humour (which is a MUST for Chinese audiences), so everyone rushed out to see it? ... as only China can do.

We know its legs won't be huge. It's not going to be a Wolf Warriors 2. It might end with $220 million. Still a monumental success, but coming from a $108m opening, that's shit legs.

So I just saw Venom. I thought I would check out what all the fuss was about, and no wonder it's doing well. It's from Tencent Pictures. When you have every person in China to market to through WeChat, no wonder awareness is high. Only a small percentage of people actually had to attend to make the $108m.

Other than that, and what attributed to its 9.4 score, is the mix of action and comedy. As I said before, Chinese love that shit. It's the perfect film for them in that way. Not to mention Hardy pretty much acting like a dude with learning difficulties throughout the film. The voice as well as that weird limp makes him look simple.

Grindelwald couldn't unseat Venom. Ouch.

And I think with it's Chinese speaking crash-site in Malaysia, and the Chinese shop keeper adding to the moviegoers here having something extra to feel familiar with.
