It's made over 60M is the US with a 22M production budget. I wouldn't call that an under-performance.

It didn't exactly over-perform either. I'd say $60m is the lower level of what was possible. Marley & Me is the top end with more than $140m.

Anyway, its China gross isn't surprising to me. I hate to sound like a broken record (actually, I love it) but China's population is four times the size of the US, and the last 10 years of so they have really started to love dogs (as opposed to just eating them, like the Koreans!). Also, its basic story-telling technique is tailor-made for Chinese audiences.

Any idea how Kong would do in China? I believe it could do great there like $100m total. Also wasn't ADP a co-production from H. Brothers? I believe those movies might be getting additional push in the market? Though not sure on that fact, maybe Algren or stuffp can elaborate more.

Tickets have been available for a while now for both Beauty and the Beast and Kong: Skull Island. I checked my local cinema's midnight screening for both last night and only Beast had seats taken, but then it is being released a week earlier than Kong, so don't take anything from that. I guess Kong does look like the type of film to do well here. It's an effects heavy blockbuster with actors known from other things, with doses of comedy throughout. Perfect for the Zhou and Zhang Popcorn. I expect more than a $100m total for Kong.

As for A Dog's Purpose. I didn't see any H. Brother's logo at the start of the film. I don't think it has any co-production status.

Fast 8 has been added to the schedule. 14th April.

Also, Ghost in the Shell on 7th April, and Smurfs: The Lost Village on 21st April.

Once again, all the foreign films are strategically placed to avoid any benefit from the national holiday on 2nd-4th April. But four Chinese films are released for it (on 31st March and 1st April). The silver lining here is that Fast 8 should out-gross all of the Chinese films combined.

My wife just saw Beast and she said there's no gay moment. So it may have been cut in China. I'll be seeing it later so can confirm.

Couldn't spot a gay moment.

I think Kong will be huge in China. It seems like the type of pleasing and wowing action spectacle that they will eat up. Might be the biggest movie of the year if it isn't limited in showtimes during Tomb Sweeping Festival.

I can see why that might be cause for celebration.

There is nothing festive about that day. Something is lost in the translation. It is a day for remembering our loved ones who have left.

Kong is wholly financed by Chinese companies. I have no doubt it will do well there.

Even if it weren't, it would do well here. And it's only "wholly financed" by Chinese companies because Legendary is now owned by Wanda. It is still an American film with regards to development, cast, and production. Tencent literally added nothing but some money.

I doubt it will finish even in top 5. Furious 8, Pirates 5 and Transformers 5 will be the 3 biggest movies. I am sure there will be other breakouts like Zootopia and Jungle book last year.

It is wholly financed by Chinese companies, period. Wanda is the largest film exhibitor in China and will make sure there are enough theaters showing the movie.

You've said that twice now, and both times I haven't disagreed.

Couple of surprises like Zoo and JB last year. I dont know the names. I think Apes 3 could one of them and even Dunkirk could break out like Interstellar did in China.

I think he meant "And?" like "So what if it won't finish in the top five! It's still going to make a ton of money".

Added showtimes or not, every showing in my nearby cinema is packed. It's a definite hit. Second-largest Friday ever. It's a shame they didn't allow it to be released around the Tomb Sweeping holiday. It could have cleared $30m in one day.
