Re: China Box Office
Apparently there is a blackout on foreign films for the rest of July in order to give domestic films a chance.

Re: China Box Office
So it's pretty obvious what will happen. I suspect in August or September when they allow foreign films to be shown again, that we will get Spider-Man: Homecoming, War of the Planet of the Apes, Dunkirk, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and maybe even 47 Meters Down and Baby Driver all dumped within a two-week period, so as to catch up and make up for the blackout, but also to cannibalise each film's financial prospects.
It is funny, though, that nine Chinese films got released and they all make hardly nothing, and then Despicable Me 3 comes out and out-grosses them all within two days. This is where the Chinese government are just so idiotic. Cinemas, distributors, Chinese businesses would make so much more money if they were just allowed to show what they want, when they want. Imagine if the next Fast movie was allowed to be released at Spring Festival. It would clear $500m in China alone. But no, instead Chinese audiences are forced to watch the latest crappy Jackie Chan comedy.

Yeah, good guess that it will play out like that. Not sure about Baby Driver though, or have you seen any reports about it. Hope 47 meters will be released here too.

Re: China Box Office
It just seems like the type of film that will be seen to do well in the US and will be flogged to a Chinese distributor and given shit release date just to make a few bucks. I feel it is even more likely because it won't make a profit from the US alone. We'll see, but I do not think it is out of the question.

Re: China Box Office
BD is at $56.8m from a $34m budget it should clear $90m at the current pace so it will turn profit from US alone.

Re: China Box Office
If it gets $90m (big if), then the studio gets less than half of that back, so let's say $40-42m, then there's the marketing/P&A etc. ($6-8m is way too low but let's just say that's what it costs) ... ergo it will need other markets to push it into profit.

Re: China Box Office
It held at an estimated $12.7m with a second weekend drop of 38% it should get a multiplier of 3 from here on which would be $92m+ total. It will also make good amount in home-media in US to turn a profit for the studio.

Re: China Box Office
Sure, if you include everything in the US, it will turn a profit. Sure. I never disputed that. But the studio is in the business of making money, so they will obviously want to earn more, hence selling it to China to make a profit in its theatrical release is even more lucrative for them than waiting for home video.

They would love to get this released in all markets. That wasn't the point.

Your point was that it will turn a profit from the US alone, which it won't. I was just adding perspective with my last comment. If you don't intend to add anything more of value, please stop replying and derailing this thread which, after all, is about China Box Office.
Thanks

Because I wasn't wrong. If you think I was wrong, ok, what ever. Get over it. Right, onto more interesting matters...
Despicable Me 3 is up to $74m after 4 days.

Re: China Box Office
As I thought, Baby Driver gets a release date; 25th August. Same date as Cars 3. Oh, and Dunkirk opens on 1st September.
So the blackout is from 8th July to 24th August, so basically seven weeks.

Re: China Box Office
I really do not know. Revenue from domestic films has been piss-poor this year, so China will want to keep the blackout, and I don't see them giving Homecoming an August release date and letting it save the summer. It should have opened instead of Baby Driver. I could see it being released, as you say, on 8th September, but probably on the same day as something like War for the Planet of the Apes. One thing is sure, September will be crammed with foreign product.

Re: China Box Office
This is funny; out of the current top ten, eight movies are local and two are foreign. The eight local movies total cume is $97.7m, whereas the foreign movies' cume is $322m. Despicable Me 3's total is $97m alone.
It will be a miracle if the Chinese government engineer the yearly results to reflect a 55% local film market share (which is their goal every year). It is currently 39%. They should just admit that money coming in, regardless from where, is good news for the country as a whole. Nobody wants to see Chinese movies. If foreign movies were not restricted so much with sly initiatives, I believe the local film market share would be below 25%, but the overall growth of the cinema industry would benefit tenfold. The current way of working does not help local film industry. Because the film makers and studios have no incentive to produce good films, they know they get help from the Chinese government, so nothing ever improves - they just churn out crappy comedies or period fantasies. They continue to make crap films that nobody cares about because they make enough money (they are cheaply made) but they are forgotten as soon as they leave cinemas. There is no viable long-term strategy here. It's ridiculous.

Re: China Box Office
I'm still keeping an eye on The Last Knight. It may still crack the top ten highest-grossing films in China. It is currently #11 behind Zootopia. Here is the top 20:
1. The Mermaid 2. The Fate of the Furious 3. Monster Hunt 4. Furious 7 5. Transformers: Age of Extinction 6. Kung Fu Yoga 7. Mojin: The Lost Legend 8. Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back 9. Lost in Hong Kong 10. Zootopia 11. Transformers: The Last Knight* 12. Warcraft 13. Avengers: Age of Ultron 14. Goodbye Mr Loser 15. Jurassic World 16. Avatar 17. Dangal 18. Lost in Thailand 19. Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons 20. Captain America: Civil War
2017 films * still in release

Re: China Box Office
I don't know what it is with Jean Reno and China, but all of his shitty films get released. He is now starring with Andy Lau in The Adventures, a "versus" movie, which will open on 11th August, bang in the middle of the Hollywood blackout.
