Re: China Box Office
Not counting its preview-opening day, it had its first sub-$30m day yesterday (its 14th day of release) at $27m. Cume is now $570m.

Re: China Box Office
Well, it has a 9.7 score. Imagine if a movie on IMDB had that. That's pretty much universal love. Personally all I've heard is good stuff. My wife, her brother and his wife, my mother-in-law, they all loved it. Not heard anything from anyone else. Nobody at work has seen it (or if they have they are keeping quiet about it).

I'm certainly interested in seeing this box office behemoth whenever it hits a streaming service or redbox. Have to see what all the fuss is about at this point.

When will people realise that just because something is popular in China doesn't mean it's good. In fact, you should be confident that it means the exact opposite.

Re: China Box Office
I've seen Wolf Warriors 2 and it is crap. They do not have terrible taste. But this film is tailor-made for Chinese audiences, so no wonder they enjoyed it.

Re: China Box Office
A $24m Saturday brings it to $645m, with its biggest day of the weekend coming up which will put it ahead of Titanic's lifetime domestic gross. Astonishing really, if unexpected. I cannot believe more people are not talking about it.

Re: China Box Office
I didn't feel the Mermaid's run at the time made big international headlines either, but this is of course blowing that film completely out of the water. I think it's just because it's a Chinese film doing well in China, for people outside of China not very interesting. Was it any foreign film doing this well I'm pretty certain we'd have 3-4 times as much conversation about it.

Re: China Box Office
Saturday was underestimated. Its actual was $32m. So by the end of Monday I think we can safely assume it will be above $700m. And I don't see why it won't challenge The Force Awakens's domestic haul at this rate. It's still making $20-30m a day. It's not even down into the $5m or $9m or $3m days yet!!! It's a true juggernaut. Maybe the government will keep it in cinemas until it reaches a billion. That's probably the game plan here. Or to top The Force Awakens.

I think they will let it get to $1b though you never know with the foreign films releasing soon.

Re: China Box Office
Well, it has 9 days before foreign films enter the market, and the foreign films entering the market are either small or not really competition for Wolf Warriors 2, but even 9 days is enough for it to make another $200m, lol. Crazy stuff.
I saw a subway banner for Baby Driver the other day, which surprised me. Seen nothing for Valerian or Cars 3 yet.

Re: China Box Office
I won't be holding my breath. WW2 has shown some brilliant legs thus far and its still doing $10m+ over weekdays with $721.74m after 21 days. It should easily cross $800m after the coming weekend at its current pace. At the very least I see it doing $900m total.

Re: China Box Office
I cannot see $900m. It is really starting to peter out now. I would not be surprised if it misses $800m. Its showings have dropped and its tickets are getting cheaper, which means cinemas are finding it harder and harder to get more bums on seats. I mean, it has already done mind-boggling numbers so there's no need for it to seek $800m or $900m.

Re: China Box Office
I see. Its really surprising that the theaters have decided to cut showtimes for a movie doing this well.

Re: China Box Office
In China things, well cinema show time things, happen very organically, it simply died out. People were not showing up anymore so they cut show times, it definitely was not the other way around. Whichever way you want to look at it, the cinema's itself hardly ever have any hidden agenda, they just want to sell as many tickets as possible in a short time as possible. And they will emphasize whatever film they can achieve that with.

stuffp wrote: In China things, well cinema show time things, happen very organically Could not be further from the truth. But on this occasion, I believe it is true. The film is still making some good money, but there have been loads of films released since it opened and they all need screens, so Wolf Warriors 2 loses some. If it was still making $40m per day then obviously it wouldn't be losing any, but it's down to $10m a day which, for a country the size of China, isn't a lot. It's been out for 3 weeks now. Its run is coming to an end. But it did well (understatement).

So yeah, this occasion is what made me say that, however I don't see how it's not true in general either. Do you have the impression they deliberately show/ don't show certain films because of a political agenda? Getting further into that, I wonder who from cinema to cinema, or chain to chain, makes those decisions finally about which showtimes and screens to give to what film.

Re: China Box Office
Come on. China Film Group produces and distributes films and owns cinemas, and it is state-owned. It has 33% of the distribution market in China. Are you truly telling me that you don't think the government uses them to engineer box office results? And China Film Group is not the only state-owned studio either.

Re: China Box Office
Well engineer box office results is a slightly different term than choosing when, which films will play. I'm pretty convinced they'll show, of the film they have available, the prime screens and show times to the film that offers the most profit/ is the most popular. I don't think the cinemas themselves, even be it that's they're controlled by the state, are trying to plug a certain film over another with any other agenda then making money.

Re: China Box Office
That's a little naive for someone that has as much China experience as you. To engineer box office results, showtimes are one of the main methods.
