Midnight showings are extremely popular now in China. Not surprised they are getting a lot of bookings so early. The US performance is fueling this. Still, don't let this fool you that Black Panther will make hundreds of million at the Chinese box office. I think the Chinese will not be as kind to how shit the film is -- they do not have centuries of guilt to pay for.

It's the first foreign film coming out in like 4 weeks, so that will help.

But there is definitely no hype at all.

I only checked the midnight premiere at the cinema nearest to my home; 2 tickets sold so far.

This sold just 2 more tickets in the 3.5 days since.
(if this would have been Fast 9, the screening would have probably been sold out by now)

China box office remains hard to read, but I think it will do +-$100m well here, I'm certainly not expecting better.

It isn't. Peter Rabbit, Three Billboards, and All the Money in the World come out tomorrow, but sure, it's the first blockbuster foreign film coming out since the CNY ban.

Ah you're right...I forgot about those...they do seem enough of a different kind that I don't think they will affect what BBlack Panther could make, maybe to a small extent, but 100m still sounds right for BP.

Yeah, $100-$110m. And that's not a hit for a place like China. Superhero movies really do not do that much in China. Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Logan, and Justice League ALL grossed between $90-$120m in China. So that's probably the benchmark for it. If it can reach $90m, it's done well. If it can go over $115m, it's pretty great (for China) but just average in general no matter what it gets (unless it surprises with over $220m, like the last Transformers did - but it won't do that).

Honestly would not surprise me if it ends with $75m.

Just saw Operation Red Sea in a California theater. Wow, it was even more intense than Dunkirk. Definitely worth seeing the non stop action on a big screen.

Why no update in here, Passionate Thug? Hmm. I guess Black Panther's opening was bad.

Just $66.5m.

lol. Gotta love China and their brutal honesty over race. Hope PC-culture never arrives here.

Joking aside, though, it is film's like Black Panther that will begin to change perceptions. Frequency of seeing other cultures and skin colours is the only way for a people to accept differences. So people should never have even expected China to embrace Black Panther. The country wasn't ready to make it a huge hit. Never was. I knew it would not shatter records like some were hoping (and some were outright predicting). In the US, a film like Black Panther has had a relatively easy time, but in China films like this will always have to battle and battle and battle.

I found this one to be the best comment:

“When I entered the theater, a bunch of black people was fighting in the night… I’ve never been in a theater so dark that I couldn’t find my seat.”

Sounds like Paula Deen introducing her black friend in her "I'm not racist" interview. :funny:

Representation in the media is a major driver for perceptual change.

It wasn't bad at all. It was up 37% from Doctor Strange, a superhero with some Chinese flavor. Up 13% from Thor 3. Up 55% from Wonder Woman.

Considering the competition ahead, and its inevitable toxic word-of-mouth, it was a bad opening. It needed much higher. It may have been up on all of those in opening, but it will be even or less in total. That's bad. And considering it made $200m in three days in the US, it is again bad that it could only muster $66m in a country with 4x the people. Comparable grosses for the movies you mentioned are WAY more favourable.

Being up from Thor is a meaningless stat. That came out in 2011. And still just a measly 13% bump. Pathetic. You're making it look bad to anyone with one iota of a box office brain by comparing it to Thor's gross.

Tomb Raider pretty much bombs in China with just $12m in its first day. I mean, its total will look HUGE compared to its US total, but that opening day is pretty nothingless. It is the smallest day of the opening weekend. Saturday and Sunday are bigger, so it will probably make $50m+ opening. As I said, compared to any US gross it gets, it looks huge. But it's average for China.

Isn't it obvious by the lack of posts in this thread by Passionate Thug?

Anyway, it is dropping like a rock. First weekend it made $66m. Second weekend it made just $12m.

Its total is now $101m.
