Re: China Box Office I mean I wasn't sure that you guys were actually talking about Kong adding theaters. I guess I read it as it will get a wide release because of it being produced by Chinese. Hate that poster though, it looks like Kong is attacking the forest

Re: China Box Office Great to see China following the US release schedule for many films.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be out on 5th May, just like the US, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will be out on 12th May, also day-and-date.

Re: China Box Office Wanda will be happy with Kong: Skull Island. It is the highest-grossing Warner Bros. release ever in China. Out-grossing Godzilla, BvS, Pacific Rim etc. Made $124m so far in China, and managed to retain the top spot over Tomb Sweeping Festival ahead of The Devotion Of Suspect X and Extraordinary Mission (which made a measly $8.2m).
I'm interested how well Ghost in the Shell will do here in China. It has lots going for it; US blockbuster, ScarJo, anime is liked, it has seven days to itself, but it is also quite clearly a Japanese product, which fills me with unease as I know the Chinese authorities are anti-Japan. I wonder if they might try and sabotage it. Shanghai Film Group and Huahua Media are involved, so perhaps it will play fine.

Presales for Furious 8 is ginormous. Its looking at 400m+ yuan OD based on presales. I think its making more than $400m in china. That will impact legs of Ghost in china.

Re: China Box Office So just a $22m opening for Ghost in the Shell. Better than its US opening, but still pretty bad considering how front-loaded the Chinese market is (as an example; Beauty and the Beast opened with $45m, and after almost a month it only has $85m total). So don't expect Ghost in the Shell to finish with much more than $40m, especially since Fast 8 is coming out in 4 days. Even that might be out of reach.

Re: China Box Office Power Rangers and King Arthur aren't doing well. In 2 days, Power Rangers has amassed a whopping $2.6m and King Arthur has accumulated an impressive $3.7m.  Sometimes I love China. Just when you think (not me, but seemingly everyone else) they will watch any Hollywood crap with CG action, they go and reject a few and instead attend the multiplexes to see Dangal ($47m in 9 days).
