Well, Rogue One held fine during the week, but completely collapsed on Friday, dropping 76% from the opening Friday, so not going to get to $70m.

I think that was due to Passengers. I went to a midnight Thursday showing and it wasn't packed in the slightest, but for a neighbourhood cinema at that time, there were more people than I expected, plus it has been advertised everywhere.

China has a population four times the size of the USA. Big grosses for all films are going to occur. And it is still holiday time in China. Tail-end, but still holiday time.

Good-looking OD for La La Land, already surpassing 30m yuan in sales by 6am.

Hi, does anyone have a list of top movies in China (local & foreign) in terms of admission. I have seen one that list 30 movies, but I forgot the link. Thanks in advance.

http://www.cbooo.cn/Alltimedomestic

The link gives you the all-time top 100 (if you read handicapped Chinese). Column 3 is domestic total and column 4 is average ticket price. You do the math to get the admission numbers.

Box office is down at least 10% year-to-year in China. I am surprised no one is talking about it.

I saw that the other day. It's not a big deal. If China let it be more of a free market, they'd see the gains they desire. Chinese people don't want to watch Chinese rubbish all the time. If they let a foreign blockbuster be released at a festival time, it would make $200m opening weekend easy. But they'd rather restrict them and let Monkey King's Journey to the West get all the screens, and then it just makes $130m total.

Even Hollywood stuff underperformed in China. Rogue One, Passengers, Fantastic Beasts all were disappointing compared to films released a year before. There might be a shift in economic fundamentals. Or people are pickier. Or abundance of streaming services makes moviegoing obsolete.

Even Hollywood films? Yes, precisely. Because they're not given the screens and not given the prime release dates. They're pulled much quicker from cinemas too!

There is no difference between this year and last year in terms of streaming services. People could be pickier, but the latest xXx film quashes that theory. It's only 10%. Perhaps the movies just didn't look that great last year. Let's see if this year decreases before declaring it a huge issue.

China was more open to foreign releases than a year before. And there were more US-China co-productions, which means more Hollywood films got prime release spots. The window between theatrical release and availability on streaming services has become shorter.

You SAY that more Hollywood films get prime release spots, but that isn't what happens. Living here, you get more of a feel for these things than reading stats on a China Box Office site. And even when a foreign release is given a decent-ish release date, it is pulled very quickly to make way for a new Chinese film (which is why they gave it the release date in the first place - to SEEM like it's a good spot, but it never is) or it is not given the screens/showtimes. Believe me, I live here, and it is not easy to catch a lot of foreign films unless you go in the first three days or to the one big 14-screen cinema in town which keeps films for longer just because they have nothing else to show on them.

True. But Hollywood films are not necessarily better in opening numbers than Chinese productions. US films that did well were mostly co-productions, such as Transformers 4, Fast 7, Warcraft, and the Great Wall. These films were given good release dates and screen counts.

xXx 3 passes $100m. It's less than $50m away from passing the first xXx's WW total.

But I do watch xXx movies. I watch them all. I have to see these movies. It's my job! I'm an unpaid film critic that writes for WOKJ. ;)

By 3pm local time on its opening day, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter already surpassed the total of any of the previous RE films. Should be looking at a $25-30m OD.

Assassin's Creed is a lot more subdued and on track for a $5m OD.

That's quite normal here in China. It's perfect for Chinese films. The government gives Chinese films ample breathing space and the best release dates (holiday times), then shoves the US films into 2-4 week blocks where it is very busy. Opening two video-game movies on the same day is a blatant attempt to limit the box office of both. So when a US film does well in China (or quadruples its US gross), I'm always very happy. It is like putting the middle finger up to Chairman Mao.
