Yes, I will.

And tomorrow (Monday) will likely be one of the biggest days of the holiday period, too. It should more or less equal Saturday's or possibly even Sunday's numbers.

Here's the 2018 Golden Week schedule:

Sunday (04/29) - Showa Day
Monday (04/30) - Showa Day Observance (since it landed on Sunday this year).
Thursday (05/03) - Constitution Day
Friday (05/04) - Greenery Day
Saturday (05/05) - Children's Day

Everyone (businesses, schools, etc.) has the entire week off, so Tuesday and Wednesday (especially Wed.) will be much stronger than usual, too.

Great. Here in Singapore and I am assuming a lot of other OS markets Avengers will be enjoying an extended weekend because of Labor Day falling on Tuesday. There are no discounts on Monday/Tuesday here because of the public holiday.

I read Japan will have May 1st off next year because of the Emperor's abdication and depending on the government's decision it may lead to them having April 30 and May 2 off as well.

If that comes out true I guess the Golden Week will become even more HUGE and lucrative.

That's correct. Next year, with weekends included, Golden Week will be a 10-consecutive day holiday period, making it the longest-consecutive holiday period of the year, ahead of New Year and Obon Festival. Any day that falls between two holidays is turned into a holiday itself.

Emperor Akihito's abdication will be a national holiday, as well as the day after when Prince Naruhito ascends the throne to become the 126th Emperor in the world's longest reigning monarchy (founded 660 BC). This also will begin a new, unnamed Era, the sixteenth Era in Japan, marking the end of the Heisei Era after 30 years.

Also, December 23rd is currently a national holiday (Emperor's Day) since it's Emperor Akihito's birthday, but when he relinquishes the throne next year and Prince Naruhito ascends, then his birthday, February 23rd, becomes a national holiday in its place.

I have to admit, it's been fun refreshing the page and watching this post evolve :funny:

I think I've seen it change 4 times now, rather entertaining

You'll see that a lot in my posts (especially Weekend Actual posts), actually, because I try to respond quickly, then go back and proof-read AFTER I post and have to make corrections ranging from simple typos, incorrect dates, grammar, coding (bold, underline, etc.) being messed up, etc. I don't like to leave any glaring errors. :P

My posts here are also used as source material by users on some sites like Box-Office Theory, Anime News Network, and My Anime List for their articles or posts related to the Japanese box-office or just for a individual film's performance, so I won't want someone taking any "wrong", or lazy, information back anywhere else, either.

Monday Estimates will be posted here soon -- it was very a strong day, as expected. And be sure to refresh a lot, or revisit later, because I'll probably change/update it, too, haha.

While it's going to have to settle for second place possibly all week, Avengers: Infinity War has achieved the biggest 4-day total for a non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film in the market, behind the original Spider-Man trilogy.

Wasn't 4-day record a given? I think it will overtake AoU easily with the help of Golden Week.

Yes. It's worth mentioning, though, because its opening weekend was below Age of Ultron. There's an incredibly likely chance it'll end up beating Ultron's total, and it should be able to match/beat the first film as well.

That would be great if IW could beat original's gross in Japan. How is the WoM in the market?

Looks like you jinxed it! Avengers: Infinity War appears to have taken first place, even in admissions, for today!

-30% from yesterday for Avengers: Infinity War
-65% from yesterday for Conan 2018

These are just estimates from the usual locations. Also because it's discount day I'd expect the grosses to drop more than this

Indeed! Tuesday and Wednesday will be the weakest days this week (though way up versus last week, obviously), so I'm thinking Infinity War will win tomorrow (Wed.) as well.

I'm actually curious about this for a while, why Japan use admission number as ranking and not money?

Update: I try to find it myself but I ward that the source is not reliable: Movie ticket in Japan usually sold with products like T-shirt or card game or doll so the price will be very high so they (whom?) decide that admission number reflect the popularity more than money.

Where did you find that information from? I'm honestly not completely sure why films are ranked by admissions other than it making the most sense -- everything else, book/manga sales, game sales, music sales, etc., are based on units sold, so films ranked on tickets sold doesn't seem unusual to me. I could be wrong, but I believe many other countries rank films by tickets sold versus revenue earned, too.

Movie tickets are sometimes bundled with merchandise like you mentioned, but they're few and far between, so I doubt that's the reason behind it.

Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) would be responsible for making the ranking decision.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Golden Week 2018 (Daily Estimates)
With Tuesday and Wednesday over (largely travel days), Thursday through the weekend is going to be much more impressive thanks to the actual holidays taking place. I don't think any individual day will be quite as big as Monday was, but the remaining four days will be much bigger than Tuesday, for instance.

I could be wrong, but I believe many other countries rank films by tickets sold versus revenue earned, too.

You're not wrong. Out of the biggies, I think it's only the US, UK, and Australia that go by revenue. Most of Europe uses both. China uses both. It makes the most sense, as you said.

India also uses revenue as the old admissions record are pretty much untouchable.

I prefer admissions myself but revenue works well in Japan too since the country basically hasn't had much inflation since the 90s.

Regardless of the ranking method I find it pretty dishonest that certain countries don't even release admission figures on a regular basis.
