Digimon Adventure tri. Ch. 5: Coexistence managed to debut in tenth place. I believe its the first tri film to make the Top 10 since Chapter 2. Weekend Actuals are updated above.

We could be in for a close race for the #1 spot this weekend.

>Narratage has a strong pre-sales advantage, but it's due to the boost from stage greeting events today which will result in some frontloading over the weekend. Adapted from Rio Shimamoto's 2005 novel of the same name, the film stars Jun Matsumoto (Arashi) and rising star Kasumi Arimura, and is directed by Isao Yukisada. The story tells a romantic relationship between teacher and student after High School.

>Outage Coda, the third film in the Outrage franchise, looks to maintain the box office success of the yakuza series despite a five-year wait (or perhaps because of) since its predecessor. I'm not expecting it to be #1 in terms of admissions over the weekend, but it carries an uncommon R15+ rating, so its avg. ticket price will likely be high which may give it advantage in terms of revenue.

Both films appear to be aiming for ¥300 million, or a bit more, which is quite impressive for October releases.

The bottom of the Top 10 is once again open to many films attempting either to remain there or make a surprise entry.

Wasn't really a close race for #1 as I thought going into the weekend.

>Outage Coda, the third film in the Outrage franchise, came out on top, and may have achieved the biggest debut in the yakuza series. If it hit ¥300 million, that'd be a nice accomplishment for this time of year as well.

>Narratage's pre-sales accounted for a whopping ~31% of its weekend admissions, and was unable to remain competitive for the #1 spot due to poor attendance outside of its stage greeting showings on Saturday. A ¥200 million debut is still fine, but nothing more.

>Outage Coda, the third film in the Outrage franchise, came out on top over the weekend, selling an impressive 250,155 admissions over the weekend across 287 screens. This debut is 26% higher than its predecessor, and could result in a total near or exceeding ¥2 billion (~$20 million) -- certainly a satisfactory figure for the month of October.

>Narratage settles for second place, selling 153,784 admissions over the weekend on 289 screens. Isao Yukisada's adaptation of Rio Shimamoto's 2005 novel delivered a respectable debut, and it should be aiming for a total near ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>Ajin: Demi-Human held well in its second outing, and should be able to exceed ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>Hidden Figures held remarkably well in its sophomore frame, and I hope Fox and theater chains consider expanding it in the upcoming weeks.

>Alien: Covenant managed to remain in the Top 10 for one more week, but its legs have been quite poor and it's definitely not reaching ¥1 billion (~$10 million) now. Very disappointing result here.

Very nice debut for Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel Ch.1, playing on just 128 screens. The first film in the trilogy sold an impressive ~41% of its available admissions over the weekend, and since these films tend to have very high average ticket prices, I wouldn't be too surprised if its actual comes in closer to ¥400 million.

War for the Planet of the Apes achieved a mediocre start, either on par or slightly below its predecessor.

The drop-off occurred with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I believe it dropped around 50% compared to the first film. I'll have a comparison posted with the weekend actuals.

Weekend Actuals will be posted soon.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel Ch.1 delivered an excellent debut (the biggest since August), selling a very impressive 247,507 admissions over the weekend on only 128 screens. The first film in the trilogy sold nearly 45% of its available weekend admissions. I'm sure there'll be a certain degree of frontloading here, but a total over ¥2 billion (~$20 million) is very likely.

War for the Planet of the Apes had a so-so debut in second place, selling 148,909 admissions over the weekend frame on 756 screens. And since opening on Friday, the third film in the Apes series sold 192,328 admissions. Its debut is down 4% compared to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but considering how it dropped in other established markets, I'd consider this debut "good". It'll probably exceed ¥1 billion with around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($10/11 million).

Outrage Coda experienced a rather harsh second weekend drop, but its strong weekdays have propelled it near a ¥1 billion total already. It'll have to stabilize very soon though over the weekends to keep its hope of reaching ¥2 billion alive, but at the very least, it's still almost guaranteed to become the highest-grossing film in the Outrage franchise.

Ajin: Demi-Human exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone over the weekend, after three weeks in release. It's on course to exceed ¥1.5 billion ($13 million), perfectly solid for this time of year.

A Dog's Purpose continues to hold well, and its total in Japan will soon overtake Mexico's to become its second biggest international market (obviously behind China's mammoth total).

Love and Lies has yet to have its weekend figures released for some reason, but it debuted in 10th place so I'll leave its estimate here for now (I'll update when available).

Are those re-releases of Kung Fu Yoga and Kubo and the Two Strings, or just extremely late? I know Japan has late releases for Western films, but this is really taking the piss.

Nice to see Outrage Coda doing well. Surprised to see another Outrage film, to be honest. Look forward to seeing it. I like the first two, even if they're not amazing. Always look forward to Kitano's work.

Takeshi Kitano is pretty awesome. What's your favorite film, either directed by or starring him?

It would have to be Beyond Outrage. It improves on its predecessor, and I'd give it an A-. His earlier films like Sonatine and Boiling Point are good and violent, but show inexperience. And I have yet to see Violent Cop, which by the sounds of it will be awesome. Also not see Zatoichi. :|

How about you?

I've always enjoyed his character in Battle Royale. I like him in Anata e, Hana-bi, and the mentioned Outrage films.
