Weekend Forecast (06/11-12)/2016年06月11日-2016年06月12日 01 (---) ¥375,000,000 ($3.6 million), 0, ¥375,000,0000 ($3.6 million), 64: Part 2 (Toho) NEW 02 (02) ¥277,000,000 ($2.6 million), -21%, ¥6,475,000,000 ($60.1 million), Zootopia (Disney) WK8 03 (01) ¥229,000,000 ($2.1 million), -40%, ¥1,175,000,000 ($10.9 million), Deadpool (Fox) WK2 04 (03) ¥181,000,000 ($1.7 million), -47%, ¥750,000,000 ($7.0 million), Evergreen Love (Shochiku) WK2 05 (04) ¥103,000,000 ($960,000), -34%, ¥825,000,000 ($7.7 million), Wolf Girl and Black Prince (Warner Bros.) WK3 06 (---) ¥80,000,000 ($750,000), 0, ¥100,0000,000 ($930,000), Money Monster (Sony) NEW 07 (06) ¥76,000,000 ($710,000), -10%, ¥1,600,000,000 ($15.0 million), 64: Part 1 (Toho) WK6 08 (05) ¥59,000,000 ($550,000), -41%, ¥300,000,000 ($2.8 million), The Kodai Family (Toho) WK2 09 (07) ¥42,000,000 ($390,000), -38%, ¥1,040,000,000 ($9.6 million), If Cats Disappeared from the World (Toho) WK5 10 (10) ¥36,000,000 ($335,000), -36%, ¥6,090,000,000 ($56.1 million), Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (Toho) WK9 64: Part 2 is positioned to open much higher than its predecessor based on pre-sales, and it's certainly the result of the first film's ongoing strong WOM/reception. Typically, when a two-part film is released six weeks apart, the first-half begins to drop-off as audiences prepare for the second-half. And with most examples, whether its poor WOM, disappointed fanbases - the second-half doesn't open, nor does it perform, as well as the first-half. That doesn't appear to be the case with the 64 two-part film, based on the '64 (Rokuyon)' novel by Hideo Yokoyama. The first-half has developed excellent legs in recent weeks (it may even reach the ¥2 billion milestone, with a multiplier approaching 8), still very much in the Top 10, and is poised for another great hold this weekend based on pre-sales. And the second-half opening this weekend is looking to deliver with a strong debut atop the box office, possibly as high as ¥400 million. Money Monster is only receiving a modest release by Sony, opening in just 182 locations. Its opening yesterday (Friday) was mediocre, and based on Saturday pre-sales, it's unlikely to reach the Top 5 over the weekend frame and should miss the ¥100 million mark as well. |

Its first day comes in a very impressive 41% above the first-half of the film from six weeks ago (which is still in the Top 10). If Sunday performs at a similar level, the second-half of this film is on track for a debut between ¥350-400 million. That'd be quite an impressive opening, especially for this time of year. >Zootopia continues to hold on very well and while its weeks of increasing seem to be over, it's still posting excellent weekends holds. Expect to see it in the Top 3 for the remainder of the month (achieving at least 10 weeks in the Top 3) before Alice Through the Looking Glass and Finding Dory bring its run to an abrupt end in July. >Evergreen Love held better than I was expecting following its inflated opening weekend last week (stage greetings), and combined with its strong weekday numbers, legs for this one may turn out to be pretty strong. If it's able to reach the ¥2 billion mark, I'm sure Shochiku will be more than happy with that result. >Deadpool doesn't appear immune to the typical 40%+ second weekend drop that superhero films experience in the market, however, if its weekend drop does end up right at 40% or possibly under, it'll post one of the better second weekend holds for the genre. Either way, whether it ends up being frontloaded or not, it's on track to outgross all the X-Men films. |

This is a very nice 39% increase over the opening of the first-half of the film which opened six weeks ago (and is continuing to have a great run), and should lock up a total above ¥2 billion (~$20 million). And a ¥2 billion earner in the month of June is fairly uncommon, and with the first-half developing legs strong enough to get it there as well, this makes the two-part film based on Hideo Yokoyama's novel a notable success >Zootopia remains in second place for a second weekend, once again enjoying a very strong hold, now in its eighth week of release. Disney's latest blockbuster also exceed the 5 million admission milestone over the weekend, making it the first film since Disney's own The Force Awakens from December to reach the mark so far this year. >Evergreen Love managed to pull off an excellent second weekend hold, especially with it coming off an inflated opening weekend that was driven by strong stage greeting showings. Its weekday business is proving to be good as well, so the likelihood of the film exceeding the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone are looking good. And if it does just that, it'll be Shochiku's first film to reach the mark so far this year. >Deadpool also had a nice second weekend hold, one that's notably stronger than the vast majority of other comic book superhero films. It's already outgrossed all the recent X-Men films, and is well on its way on outgrossing the original trilogy as well as it, too, targeting a total above the ¥2 billion ($~$20 million) milestone. >Money Monster delivered an unremarkable debut, selling just 45,728 admissions on 182 screens over the weekend. Sony had little confidence in the film considering its low screen count, and it appears they made the right decision by not giving it any more. |

I have that list, but I made the cut off for films earning ¥300 million or more over their eighth weekends (Zootopia was a little shy). I can update it to include films that made ¥250 million+, though. Look for a post within the next 30 minutes to an hour. |

Thanks again for the work you do! I'm sorry for being so demanding, but I'd like to ask another thing. Have you ever found a reliable source for how much money Akira (1988) made at the box office? Everywhere I look is a dead end. |

Prior to 2000, most box office figures were reported by releasing the "distributor income" of films. This figure usually represented 55-60% of a film's box office revenue; that percentage can vary slightly, either plus/minus a few points. I've seen the dis. income come in close to 50% (never below), and as high as 64% before. Akira's distributor income figure was ¥750 million. Its box office revenue is unknown to my knowledge, but a good guess would be ~¥1.1/1.2 billion or $8/9 million using the avg. exchange rate of the first three months of its release. Its box office had to be viewed as a success because the only animated movies I see making more in the 1980s were the Doraemon and Dragon Ball films, and, of course, Kiki's Delivery Service which kick-started Studio Ghibli's future box office dominance. |

Was anime not as popular even as a local commodity until the 90s/00s? For some reason I thought it'd been a cultural institution since the 60s. |

That's true but anime was mostly limited to television, which began to surge in popularity in the 1970s and early 1980s. As a result of television's dominance (and Japan's economic woes), the box office went into a severe recession and it hasn't grown much in terms of admissions since, even to this day. So considering the high-cost of producing a full-length animated film, it was rarely done and financially risky. And the only animated films to begin to really find any success at the box office were those based on television anime series (Doraemon, Dragon Ball) due to their established (television) base, and that still remains pretty true, though not as strictly, in today's market. I mean, even today there's still a lot of risk in releasing traditional hand-drawn animated films given how costly they are. This is what caused a studio as big and as popular as Studio Ghibli to finally shut down their film production department two years ago... |

I'm not sure what Japanese recession and deflation has to do with it. After all, Studio Ghibli had its biggest success during 1992-2004, when the Japanese economy was in poor shape compared to the boom of the 80s. And the poor Japanese economy seems to have a bigger impact now on the box office, when relatively few movies released since 2010 have made it into the top 100 of all time. |

Post subject: | Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 Charts Updating |
The economy played a significant role on the anime industry, and the film industry as a whole in the early 1970s. The Nixon Shock (1971), for example, resulted in Japan's Central Bank to intervene in the exchange market on a large-scale, buying over $1.3 billion in order to support the Dollar, and it greatly increased the foreign exchange reserve in just a matter of weeks. But this still didn't prevent the Dollar from depreciating against the Yen. And in the early 1970s, the anime industry began to suffer with increased competition, too, with some studios, such as Mushi, declaring bankruptcy. The industry-leading Toei had to layoff many staff members, and switch to a pay-system for its workers based on performance-level to help reduce costs further. Animators that would eventually make up Studio Ghibli, and other well-known studios such as Madhouse, was a later result of this, too. There haven't been many films enter the Top 100 in recent years because the box office has been pretty stagnant since the 1970s in term of yearly admissions. And television, while gradually on the decline, is still popular to this day compared to most of the world which is going digital. Also, with more and more domestic films are being released each year, audiences have more films to choose from and they're spreading out the ticket sales substantially. The era of the uber-blockbusters is probably over, though it doesn't mean there still can't be massive films either (Frozen from two years ago, for example), they're just becoming very rare. Before the rise of television and the economic woes of the early 1970s, yearly admissions in Japan were over 300 million, 400 million, even 500 million+ in the 1960s (over 1 billion admissions were sold each year in the late 1950s!). But since 1972 - which dropped nearly 100 million admissions from just three years earlier - yearly admissions have remained between ~150-175 million for the most part, with the lowest point being the early/mid 1990s (120-130 million range). Also in 1970, there were 3,246 screens nationwide. That number continued its rapid decline from the golden days of the 50s/60s with more theaters closing, and the nationwide screen count eventually dropped below 2,000 in 1989 and didn't recover until 1999 (overall, it took 38 years before theaters and screen counts could recover). Today, there are 3,437 screens, the highest number since 1969. |

WK4 09 (---) ¥50,000,000 ($480,000), 0, ¥65,000,000 ($625,000), 10 Cloverfield Lane (Toho-Towa) NEW 10 (06) ¥49,000,000 ($470,000), -31%, ¥1,725,000,000 ($16.1 million), 64: Part 1 (Toho) WK7 This weekend is the definition of a dump weekend in a traditional dumping month. We will have a very close race to see which holdover will come out on top this weekend. 64: Part 2 is probably the slight favorite, but Zootopia could certainly reclaim the #1 position (in its ninth weekend!). Also, in what would be a huge surprise, Evergreen Love has a shot at rising to the #1 position (it's looking at the best hold this weekend), capturing the top spot for the first time since settling for third place the past two weeks. All three look likely to earn between ¥200-225 million this weekend. Now onto the openers... Sadako vs Kayako, I think, will end up being the top opener over the weekend, but it's only going to achieve a fourth place debut at best. The film puts the iconic horror characters from The Ring and Grudge franchises against one another as they, probably, frighten the cast. Mars has some nice pre-sales, but it's only playing on 197 screens and should have poor walk-up business since the majority of its pre-sales are coming from stage greetings. It could end up as the weekend's top opener, though. Creepy has the most potential based on the cast & crew credits, starring a popular lead in Hidetoshi Nishijima, but its pre-sales are the weakest and its screen count of 256 is unimpressive. It's the most unlikely to become the weekend's top opener, but it can't be ruled out completely since its walk-up business should be the strongest. 10 Cloverfield Lane is being dumped without any effort at trying to give it a respectable opening. It's only playing on 143 screens, and only earned around ¥15 million ($150,000) yesterday (Friday). A weekend around ¥50 million is probably the best it can manage to bring do. |

They're going to be very close (possibly within 5% of each other). Sadako vs Sayako should see a sizable dip tomorrow, so it's unlikely to be a #1 contender. However, it just might beat Deadpool over the weekend to achieve a Top 4 debut. |

If Evergreen Love does manage to rise to the #1 position, it'll have done so after spending two weeks in third place. There have been several films over the years that have opened in second place that would eventually rise to first place in their third week (Zootopia itself did it earlier this year), but I can't recall any film debut in third place (or lower) that managed to climb its way to first place... If it happens, I'll do some research into it. Weekend Estimates will be posted soon. |
