A lot of rough drops this weekend, but post-Golden Week considered, these aren't too bad.

>Zootopia claims its first weekend atop the box office over its third weekend in release, and delivered a very nice hold that's slightly better than Cinderella's from last year. It's edging closer and closer to the ¥3 billion milestone and should also exceed the ¥4 billion ($35 million) near the end of May. From there, it begins its mission of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone; chances being about 50/50 at the moment.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare is finally dethroned after enjoying three-consecutive weeks in first place. The Detective Conan films always drop over 50% over the post Golden Week weekend, so the large decline here isn't surprising (in fact, if estimates hold, it's slightly better than most previous entries). It's either barely below or just above the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone after this weekend, and having accomplished that achievement and becoming the highest-grossing film in the series, the only thing left for it to do now is to add more to it's incredible total as it aims for ¥6 billion ($55 million).

>Captain America: Civil War also experiences a rough second weekend drop, however, given the frontloaded nature of superhero films in the market and with it coming off of Golden Week, a decline around 50% is actually quite good. It remains on course to exceed the ¥2.5 billion milestone, and while I doubt it'll have the legs required to reach the ¥3 billion mark, as long as it can reach ¥2.58 billion (beating Iron Man 3), it'll claim the title of highest-grossing non-Spider-Man/Avengers superhero film.

>64: Part 1 managed to surprise a bit over the weekend, coming in much higher than its pre-sales indicated on Friday. This was largely due to how strongly its walk-up business was in the morning/afternoon hours, suggesting it has significant senior appeal. The police drama starring Koichi Sato looks to have comfortably debuted above ¥200 million, unless its senior audience drove its avg. ticket price down too much, so it's likely to become another ¥1 billion earner this year.

>Road to High & Low... I really misread this one on Friday when I posted the weekend forecast. Its pre-sales represented a very high percentage of its weekend admissions, and I didn't check beforehand to notice it had a limited number of showtimes as well. Still, an opening above ¥100 million on just 141 screens for a preview of the actual film that'll open on July 16th is still impressive.

>Terra Formars pretty much collapsed. Its admissions were down nearly 70%, and with a weekend drop around the 60% mark (very, very rare in Japan), it'll be losing seating/screens very, very fast. It's unlikely to reach the ¥1 billion milestone now as well, making this film a bomb for Warner Bros..

What's the previous biggest CONAN film by admissions?

Last year's (3.58 million). The current film should be at 3.9/4.0 million now after four weeks, and is on track for ~4.6/4.7 million.

Yu-gi-oh's run makes no sense. Largest decrease during GW weekend followed by the largest, and only, increase in the post-GW weekend.

I didn't look into why it increased (or likely increased, depending on actuals), but it probably had some sort of giveaway, fan events, or something going on over the weekend. These small anime releases can be difficult to keep up with since most have special events occurring during their runs.

A lot of rough drops this weekend, but post-Golden Week considered, these aren't too bad.

>Zootopia claims its first weekend atop the box office over its third weekend in release, and did so by delivering an excellent post-Golden Week hold. Disney's latest hit film sold an additional 288,041 admissions over its third weekend in release, bringing its three week admissions above 2.3 million.

It should be evident now that it's going to survive post-Golden Week, and even if its weekday business is slow, it's likely to have a long run due to its staying power over the weekends. A total north of ¥4 billion ($35 million+) is certainly happening now, and its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone are very good. Walt Disney Animation continues their huge winning streak in the market, and have been beating Pixar consistently now for the past three years.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare gets dethroned after enjoying three-consecutive weeks atop the box office, dropping 50% over the post-Golden Week holiday period, but it has so much to celebrate it doesn't matter what happens from here on out. The 20th anniversary release sold a further 209,805 admissions in its fourth weekend of release, bringing its four week admissions up to early 4 million admissions!

The 20th entry in the Detective Conan franchise became the highest-grossing, and most-attended, film in the series history prior to the weekend, and became the first film in the franchise to exceed the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone as well. There's nothing more for it to really achieve at this point other than to continue adding onto its incredible figures over the next several weeks; aiming for a total above the ¥6 billion ($55 million+) milestone now.

>Captain America: Civil War sees the expected large decline the superhero genre is known for, but it also managed the standard superhero drop over the post-Golden Week holiday frame, making its drop better in comparison with pretty much every non-Spider-Man film in the market.

The third entry in the Captain America series is outpacing Iron Man 3 by about 11% after two weeks in release, and as long as it can maintain that distance (or obviously not lose), it'll go on to earn around ¥2.8 billion ($26 million) or so; making it the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man/Avengers film in Japan. Oh yeah, it's looking at a possible 400% increase over Captain America: The Winter Soldier (and 700% increase over the original film) as well. #Spider-ManEffect

>64: Part 1 delivers a somewhat surprising debut, selling 203,703 admissions over the weekend across 319 screens. This latest film in one of Japan's most popular genres (Police Dramas), starring Koichi Sato, will definitely become another ¥1 billion ($10 million+) earner for the year, and perhaps even come near ¥1.5 billion ($14 million). Not bad; not bad at all given the post-Golden Week openers rarely make an impact.

>Road to High & Low settles for fifth place by selling 92,757 admissions on just 141 screens over the weekend. The film serves as a previews of the upcoming High & Low: The Story of S.W.O.R.D. opening in July; Exile Tribe's theatrical release that's apart of their multi-media campaign "High & Low".

Zootopia managed to claw its way atop the box office last weekend, its third weekend in release, and will face its first challenge of retaining its position this weekend.

If Cats Disappeared from the World will attempt to bump Zootopia from atop the box office this weekend, and is has a fair chance of doing so. The solemn love story, starring Ken Sato and Aoi Miyazaki, has a decent amount of online interest, but more importantly, its early pre-sales suggests it might manage a debut near ¥300 million -- the figure that Zootopia will likely be grossing over its fourth weekend in release.

The Magnificent Nine should also perform pretty decently over the weekend, and these period comedy films generally find success at the box office, even if it's modest. An opening around ¥200 million, maybe slightly less, should be attainable for a comfortable third place debut. Acclaimed director Yoshihiro Nakamura is directing the film, based on Michifumi Isoda's popular novel.

I forgot that today (Saturday) is a Toho Cinemas Day (discount ticket prices), so weekend drops will be quite good. Also, this weekend has been strong over the past few years, so we might be in store for some very, very good holds (some sub-20%, with chances of increases).

>Zootopia, in particular, is in spectacular shape. It held very well last week over the post-Golden Week weekend to earn its first #1 ranking (in its third weekend), and is looking to repeat this weekend.

And I'm nearly 100% certain it's going to experience a weekend increase. Audiences are really, really taking advantage of the discount day to see this one. Last year, Cinderella only dropped 4% this weekend (without any assistance), so an increase does look almost assured for Zootopia.

>If Cats Disappeared from the World was looking good prior to the weekend, but its barely picked up any momentum now that the weekend is upon it. It was outpacing The Magnificent Nine by a comfortable margin on just two days ago, but they two are running very close now based on pre-sales. These films are playing to two very different audiences (almost exclusively teens and women vs. almost exclusively adults/seniors), so it's difficult to say which one has the advantage this weekend.

And depending on how well the holds are this weekend, Detective Conan and 64: Part 1 could certainly hold well enough to remain viable Top 3 contenders.

>Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions looks like it's going to enjoy yet another weekend increase, but its small release makes it very difficult to pinpoint an accurate percentage range of that increase. Let's say 20%? *shrug* This film has been quite unpredictable, even by most limited/near limited release anime film standards.

>The 10th position this weekend is up for grabs (since Terra Formars continues its collapse), but I'm betting on The Revenant climbing back into the Top 10.... However, the second HK: Hentai Kamen film actually has fair pre-sales; I just can't see its low theater count of 53 (85%! accounted for at the usual locations) allowing it to make a serious play at the Top 10.

Zootopia's fourth Saturday admissions are up 3% compared to its opening day admissions. Incredible. Its fourth Sunday should come in comfortably below its first Sunday, since yesterday was boosted slightly from Toho Cinemas Day, but its fourth weekend won't be too far off its opening weekend.

Its run has been on a smaller scale in terms of earnings when compared to Frozen and Big Hero 6, but so far it's having almost as impressive of a run as them (at least the latter). If it was only able to draw in a slightly older audience to have similar results on the weekdays, where it's noticeable weaker than its past studio predecessor's, then we could have been looking at an even more special run; it is still somewhat early, though, so let's wait and see what the following weeks hold in store.

The Magnificent Nine and If Cats Disappeared from the World are in a very close race to see which film will claim the second place position, but 64: Part 1 and even Detective Conan trail them closely enough that Sunday could still reward one of them the second place spot, too.

And finally, everyone's favorite pantie-masked forbidden superhero is doing his best at penetrating the Top 10, but he'll ultimately come in a bit shy. The second HK: Hentai Kamen film was very unlikely to make the Top 10 anyway, given the limited release, but it's actually doing somewhat well by achieving a decent 23% capacity for the day.

Remarkable results for Zootopia. Its fourth weekend admissions are about 2% above its opening weekend admissions at the usual locations. Nationwide, I believe it'll be a few percent behind its opening weekend admissions since Toho Cinemas are apart of the usual locations, which they had a discount day on Saturday, but it's still an incredible result.

As for the openers, The Magnificent Nine pretty much performed as expected, though If Cats Disappeared from the World comes up as slightly disappointing.

Weekend Estimates will be posted soon.

Since Saturday was a Toho Cinemas Discount Day, weekend admissions changes should be slightly better than the percentage drops in terms of gross due to lower avg. ticket prices because the usual locations probably accounts for closer to three-fourths of the market rather than the usual two-thirds of the market.

Zootopia continues its excellent run in Japan, and actually delivered its most impressive weekend yet. This isn't its biggest weekend, but its in contention to be its second biggest-to-date. It's been running a couple hundred million behind Frozen and Big Hero 6 on the weekends, but its holds have been equally as impressive so far after four weeks. I'll have a comparison post up soon.

The Magnificent Nine and If Cats Disappeared from the World wind up being the typical average openers for this time of year. May and June are very weak months in Japan, and the majority of releases are placed there since they lack the studio's confidence to perform well over the more lucrative months of the year.

Yeah, they should have allowed it to pass Titanic to become the #2 film all-time. It wouldn't have taken much more.

Although, releasing the DVD in time for summer vacation proved a monster success (it became the best selling DVD of all-time; grossing something like 120 million in USD). It still charts weekly on the top selling DVD chart, too.

>Zootopia wins its second-consecutive week atop the box office, after climbing to the number one position last weekend, its third week of release. Walt Disney's latest hit saw a very, very impressive 20% jump in admissions, selling 351,049 tickets over its fourth weekend of release; bring its four week admissions above 2.9 million. Its fourth weekend, in terms of gross and admissions, ranks as its second biggest weekend-to-date (behind its second weekend).

The film may have started off below expectations, but it's now well on its way in exceeding them. A very conservative projection now is that it'll exceed the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone, but there's no reason anymore doubt that it's going to go comfortably higher than that mark. Its actually been improving upon its weekday performance (Monday, yesterday, was up once again versus last week) and has been playing a bit better in the evening than during its first couple weeks in release. All of this indicates positive WOM has definitely spread, and it's begun to attract a very wide audience that includes adults.

So, given that it's just now found its stride and has yet to find its peak, even after four weeks, there is a lot of potential here for a huge run still to come that'll probably go into July. I wouldn't be too surprised if it's able to eventually exceed ¥7 billion ($65 million+), which would give it a multiplier above 15 (on par with Big Hero 6).

>The Magnificent Nine comes in a solid second place, selling a decent 159,960 admissions over the weekend on 308 screens. The film is the latest is a successful streak of period comedies that has really become a bankable genre over the past few years. It should have little trouble exceeding the ¥1 billion milestone, and could make a run at ¥1.5 billion ($12-14 million).

>If Cats Disappeared from the World narrowly manages a third place start, selling 141,691 admissions across 290 screens over the weekend. Overall, this is a mediocre debut, even if it's the standard opening for a May/June release. At the helm was acclaimed director Yoshihiro Nakamura; pre-sales were encouraging, and most theaters gave it their largest screens, yet it was unable to captivate many over the actual weekend. Still, it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, so considering it a modest success.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare continues to hold on fairly well and is about to outgross Yo-Kai Watch 2 to become the second biggest film of the year. It's already become a blockbuster by exceeding ¥5 billion, as well as becoming the highest-grossing, and most-attended, film in the series, so the only achievements left are to simply outgross other films.

>Captain America: Civil War slips two more spots, falling out of the Top 5 after three weeks in release. However, it continues to outpace Iron Man 3, though narrowing its lead from 11% to just 5%, with a similar third weekend gross, so it should still be on track to outgross it; becoming the market's highest-grossing non-Spider-Man/Avengers film in the market.
