Meet Koyoharu Gotouge:

Image

Wanted to share some information on Koyoharu Gotouge (official photo above), the series creator and author (aka. mangaka) of Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer). First, Gotouge is rumored, but not confirmed, to be female. Very rare for the manga industry (major publications, especially). "They" (author prefers not to be identified by gender/sex) are known as Professor Crocodile or Crocodile-sensei and all images of "them" is of a cartoon crocodile that wears glasses. Second, Gotouge is only 31-years old and began their career as a Jump! mangaka at just 24-years old.

And that's it! LOL.

Many manga creators are generally very secretive and there is little information known about the majority of them, including photos. If the rumors are true that Gotouge is a female (or possibly a trans-person), and if that is ever confirmed by them, they'd be making history as a manga author. They already have if true as the best-selling female (or trans) manga creator of all-time (and all records associated with that so far), but are also making history now as the creator of the source material this movie is being adapted from.

New Biggest Aggregated Weekend (Top 10) Ever. Biggest Weekend of 2020 (duh). A day later than usual posting the Weekend Actuals, but I wanted all the numbers to be available this week before posting them so the aggregated Top 10 total is 100% accurate.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train takes #1. I think it's been discussed and analyzed over the last 12 pages to skip discussing it here now. It's broken every opening record possible.

>Tenet held well despite losing all of its IMAX screens. It's already become Nolan's second biggest film in the market, only behind Inception now, and is going to finish with a very good ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) total or so.

The Weekend Top 10 is up what must be a record 210.4% versus the same weekend last year.

Koyoharu Gotouge/ Crocodile Sensei is an amazing storyteller. Whenever I reread her manga, I could see some old chapter relate to the newer ones. I can't wait for everything in the manga to be animated.

And just so it's not overlooked, Twiceborn had a pretty great opening weekend. I didn't realize it was only playing on 79 screens, and yet it earned ¥138.9 million ($1.3 million) and sold 111,053 admissions over the weekend (Sat. and Sun.).

I'm not on my PC to get exact figures right now, but it looks like it'll finish below Monday by around 20%, and ahead of Tuesday by 30%. But evening sales with more theaters back to 100% on the weekdays starting today could improve those percentages.

Using rough estimates based on morning and early afternoon sales, I'm thinking Wednesday will come in around 550-600 million ($5-6 million) on 450,000-475,000 admissions. New Wednesday record by a significant margin.

And if Wednesday does come in below Monday, that's fine, especially since it's the first week which could have resulted in Monday being boosted some by weekend spillover. The main thing here is for it to see the big jump over Tuesday, which is looking likely. That indicates it's not going to be particularly frontloaded moving forward.

Just checked Japan all time box office. Until now only 5 movies passed the milestone 20B yen. One of them barely crossed the line with 20.03B yen. Two others finished in the same range of 25B. One other finished at 26B. And the last one finished at 30B !!!!

At the box-office, definitely. Or do you mean this film will earn more than the Fate franchise as a whole (mobile revenue, home video sales, general merchandise, etc.) in 16-years? I find that later part hard to believe.

To expand on the Demon Slayer's music discussion and how it can greatly assist a film at the box-office, and often being a contributing factor for something to become a social phenomenon in Japan, the weekly ranking/sales on Oricon's weekly sales charts were released:

LiSA's theme song/ending credit song for the movie, "Homura", debuted atop the weekly singles chart dated 10/12-18. In addition to this achievement, which is also her first single to debut at #1, her new studio album "LEO-NiNE" also debuted at #1 on the weekly albums chart selling 66,000 physical copies.

This makes her the first artist in 7-years to top both charts in the same week. Also, she's the first female artist in a whopping 16-years to top both charts in the same week since Utada Hikaru in May 2004.

And just to add icing to the cake, LiSA's opening song for the anime, "Gurenge", has now been on the Top 10 weekly singles chart for a total of 44-weeks (27-consecutive weeks) since releasing way back in April 2019. "Gurenge" has reached #1 five times: two-consecutive weeks in May 2019, one week in December 2019, and two-consecutive weeks in April 2020 (a year after being released).

So Demon Slayer had the #1 manga, #1 single, and #1 movie over the weekend. It's being called a hashira "pillar" (pun intended) for the Japanese economy this year.

2020 Manga Sales (as of Oct. 11th): 70,354,435 copies sold (physical only!) so far. That's approx. ¥32 billion ($303 million) in earnings.
2020 Movie Release breaking all records on a daily basis so far, and likely going to reach ¥20 billion ($200 million) or more.
2020 Music Sales, while I don't have figures, doing great and making history (anime opening being downloaded over 1 million times, #1 singles from LiSA, etc.).

And who knows about general merchandising, other than it's through the roof. I think you all saw the huge merchandise stands that were set up in theaters over the weekend too.

Sure, but it's only down 10% from Monday which is amazing. Not to mention it's broken the non-opening Wednesday record by ~119% (not 19%, 119%). Checked this in advance, and a member on 5chan also confirmed the highest known Wednesday is from Your Name. (160,000 at the usual locations, so ~240,000 nationwide using that film's standard usual locations-to-nationwide multiplier).

And while they're very rare, once in awhile a film (just a few every 5 years its seems) will open on a Wednesday (before a major holiday week), and the record for biggest Wednesday opening day is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at ¥334 million. Demon Slayer's first Wednesday, its 6th day in release, will also beat that opening-day Wednesday record by ~65-70%

My husband's not very interested in box-office numbers, but he's seen that I've been doing a lot on the computer the past week so I explained to him that Demon Slayer (anime that he's watched) is breaking every record possible so far, and not just by a bit or even a lot like the usual record breaker that can come every 4-5 years, but by extraordinarily margins.

So he asked me how would it still be interesting to follow the box-office now if nothing will challenge or break these records? And he's got a point. I'll still find interest, and never say never, but everything is going to look small or disappointing in comparison from this point forward. Everything of course won't really be small and disappointing, but nothing is ever realistically going to beat the records that Demon Slayer continues to post. So enjoy this week, and maybe the weeks to follow, because it's going to be the best it ever gets.

I read somewhere in this thread saying that the 2nd weekend of movie in Japan tend to not drop hard why other markets are on the opposite side?
Is the 2nd weekend looking good for DS?

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books

Second weekend drops are typically among the best during a film's run, particularly a film that had a big opening weekend.

It's early to really project what Demon Slayer might do this weekend. For one, not all theater screen/showtime counts are out yet. They'll both still be very high, likely enough to have broken the widest opening record on its own if it didn't already last week, but the actual figure is important to know. And second, don't take this upcoming Friday-to-Friday drop to be a predictor for the weekend. Friday-to-Friday will see a big drop-off (likely above 50%), but the weekend drops will be better than whatever the Friday result is.

Note, however, that even if its second Friday does drop over 50%, it'll still be enough to claim the biggest Friday ever... after its opening Friday, I might add. So the two biggest all-time Fridays will be Demon Slayer and... Demon Slayer.

It's very important to remember, that despite Demon Slayer's unbelievable Friday last week, Friday is still very much a weekday in this market, so its second Friday "should" behave closer to normalcy.

Your husband does have a point lol.

Also to expand on DS' 2020, it's also #1 on light novel sales by a huge margin.
