Oof, the new Detective Conan movie got pushed back to April 2021. Big loss for this year.

A big loss for 2020 indeed, as it was a strong candidate for biggest film of the year. But it's honestly the right move. It was going to exceed 50/55% capacity on it's opening weekend and just couldn't do that anytime soon. And if it was going to miss a July/August reschedule date, then December would have been the earliest it would have opened. (Sept.-Nov. aren't suitable for major releases).

So...just moving it back a full year to its traditional April release makes the most sense. Things will hopefully be largely normal by then.

Re-release.

A few news films in the Top 10 this week, two new releases and one new re-release. And the box-office continues to grow every week with strong increases. Some bigger films like Dr. Doolittle and Sonic the Hedgehog open later this month, and they might be able to post respectable numbers if things continue going this well.

Back to this weekend: Both new releases are smaller films from independent distributors, so hard to say how their debuts went, but I'd consider them at least decent under the circumstances. The Dead Don't Die, in particular, seems to have performed quite well.

The Avengers received a re-release this weekend and ranked in sixth-place. Disney may decide to re-release all of the Avenger films in the coming weeks, so it'll be interesting to see how much they add to their previous totals in the market.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons refuses to be dethroned, still claiming the #1 spot in its twelfth-week in release. It did fall below 100,000 for the first time, but when your game barely dips below that mark after three-months on shelves, you're just bloating at that point. It's going to exceed 5 million (physical) copies by the end of June.

Clubhouse Games for the Switch enjoyed a good first-week, and it's a game that is likely to continue selling well for a very long time, so expect it to become a Weekly Top 30 staple.

A number of Sony titles (Complete/Premium editions) resurfaced in the Weekly Top 30 this week due to a sale from the publisher. The Last of Us Remastered did particularly well, rising into the Top 10 after several weeks hovering around the bottom of the Top 30 for the past several weeks. The Last of Us 2 is coming out later this month, so that too explains its sales increase.

On the hardware front: The Switch consoles sales dripped a bit, but remained pretty stable. And the PlayStation 4 consoles enjoyed a big week-to-week increase in sales, likely attributed to the PS5 announcement being delayed (at the time of this sale's week) along with a sale on a lot of Sony titles this past week.

Corpse, do you know how many screens got Russia sci-fi movie The Blackout. Two weeks ago our press reported it will be released today on more than 100 screens. Is that true?

It did open today (or yesterday, Friday), playing on 95 screens. It's difficult to predict/project numbers right now given that not all theaters have reopened (though most have now!), the capacity limits in place, and seat reservations being unreliable due to the capacity limits. But I'm guessing the film earned around ¥1.2 million ($11,000) on Friday. Obviously that isn't much, but it was enough to make the Top 10 based on my estimates, coming in 7th-9th place. It might crack the Weekend Top 10.

Corpse, today Tenet postponed WW released by 2 weeks. Originally, it'll be released in Japan on September 18. But according to IGN Japan, that release date is disappeared from Tenet Japanese localization website, is it a good sign that Japanese will experience the movie earlier than September? Or even the same date as WW release?

It's still listed for Sept. 18th on all the movie websites out of Japan. That's the day before the Silver Week holiday frame (Sept. 19th-22nd this year), so I don't think they'd want to move it from that slot.

Also, Japan's current reopening phases lasts through August (this includes theater capacity limits) so at the moment, theaters should be allowed to operate at 100% capacity going into September.

Best Selling Manga by Series of 2020 (Top 10): [11.18-06.07]

01. 50,467,530 (New All-Time Yearly Record) - Demon Slayer (Shueisha/Koyoharu Gotouge)
02. 5,001,538 est. - One Piece (Shueisha/Eiichiro Oda)

04. 4,004,885 - Kingdom (Shueisha/Yasuhisa Hara)
05. 3,499,156 est. - My Hero Academia (Shueisha/Kohei Horikoshi)
06. 3,416,310 - Haikyuu!! (Shueisha/Haruichi Furudate)
07. 3,303,393 est. - The Promised Neverland (Shueisha/Kaiu Shirai)
08. 2,476,684 - Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (Square Enix/Iro Aida)
09. 2,274,135 est. - Attack on Titan (Kodansha/Hajime Isayama)
10. 2,174,849 - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

A few notes about these lists:

Spoiler: show
01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (& More): Manga Sales (06/01-07)
Little Women debuted in second place over the weekend, grossing ¥41,215,140 ($384,000) on 30,464 admissions across 300 screens. Its 3-day total reached ¥54,151,340 ($505,000) on 40,210 admissions.

The film was the first wide release since box-office reporting resumed and since theaters began reopening five weeks ago, and while it wasn't able to open in first place (The Real Exorcist achieved its 5th-weekend at #1), this is a solid start. It's planned to expand to 340 screens as the last batch of theaters reopen in coming weeks. I'll have the Weekend Actuals (Top 10) posted later this evening.

Dr. Dolittle (June 19th) and Sonic the Hedgehog (June 26th) are the next notable wide releases this month.

Re-release.

Interesting weekend. I believe this is the first weekend that will begin getting the box-office back to "normal." What I've taken away from this weekend and its varying declines and increases is:

>Films that were in release prior to the shutdown, while still enjoying week-to-week increases as theaters reopen, are starting to level off a bit. The majority of theaters have reopened now, but once the remaining few do in the coming weeks, these films will probably begin to see gradual week-to-week declines as they would under normal circumstances.

>The Real Exorcist was the first notable film to open when the first theaters reopened five weeks ago, and up until this weekend, it was seeing week-to-week increases like the films that were in release prior to the shutdown, due to expanding to more theaters as they opened each week. But now that it's basically playing as wide as it can be (as of last weekend), it experienced its first (and somewhat large) drop. I expect it to see steady declines moving forward given it's mostly played under normal circumstances.

>And finally, last weekend's openers (The Dead Don't Die and Anna) were some of the first to open with most theaters being reopened, so they dropped in their second weekends as a normal release would since they've were released under normal circumstances, too.

>But lastly, as for the re-releases, I imagine they'll largely be unpredictable in their weekly performances. The 2020 release schedule is beginning to take shape, do I ultimately don't expect them to be around much longer, perhaps not longer than one or two more weeks as more and more new (or postponed) films begin to fill theater screens.

And note that when I say "normal" or "normal circumstances", that still obviously accounts for COVID-19 concerns and theaters having to operate under capacity limitations in place. "Normal" just implies the most normal the box-office has been (most theaters reopened, box-office reporting having resumed, etc.) since before the shutdown.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (& More): Weekend Actuals (06/13-14)
First, let me say that I've been estimating some its cumulative total because it's oddly not being updated, even though the other re-releases have been.

Over the past five weeks that have been reported since theaters began reopening, it has earned ¥22,672,250 over the weekends alone. Add that to its total before the re-release (¥14.06 billion), then its new total would be ¥14.083 billion. I'm just estimating about ¥15 million more for an estimated total of ¥14.098 billion by using very rough weekday estimates. Weekdays have been around half of the weekend business at the usual locations, and there's been a weekday holiday since the reopening began, so ¥15 million or so should be fairly accurate (or the best we have right now).

But no admissions have been reported for any of the re-releases. Using what it has roughly grossed since the re-release though, it should have added between 25,000-30,000 admissions so far, so I'd estimate its cumulative admissions to be around 10.54 million now.

No new game releases this past week (at least none that managed to crack the Top 30...looking at you Wonderful 101 remaster...), but one very notable achievement occurred (beyond Animal Crossing: New Horizons still reigning at #1 and about to crack 5 million copies sold).

Said achievement goes to Ring Fit Adventure, which exceeded 1 million copies this past week. Note that this is pure retail sales (as are all the figures in these weekly charts) given it's a physical release only. Also, it's the first original IP release to sell over 1 million copies since Splatoon on the Wii U from 2015, 5-years ago! This is true for all titles on all platforms, not just for a Nintendo release. No original IP on any console has managed to reach 1 million in sales over the past five years until now.
