Since the box-office year is Dec.-Nov., I like to keep the opening weekends of November films that end up as releases for the following year in the previous year since the OW is firmly in November and apart of that year. Does that make sense? Kind of a winded explanation.

All that said, Frozen II appears to be counted as a 2019 release anyway! Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) has surprisingly included it in their 2019 Yearly Data. I'll keep it in the 2020 charts until its run concludes to see if Eiren removes it from 2019, but chances are they'll keep it as a 2019 release. I'm surprised, really, because just last year Fantastic Beasts 2 opened on the same weekend in 2018, but it was counted as a 2019 release. But, there are a few examples of late-November releases remaining in the year they opened, so...

I'll have the 2019 Yearly Data posted later tonight. 2019 was a truly massive year, so stay tuned. So many records broken and other huge accomplishments occurred.

That record probably belongs to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Antarctica, or Titanic, but their opening weekend figures are unknown... Of the recorded data, the record belongs to Bohemian Rhapsody (x36.97).

And... I'm going to exclude Promare from my All-Time Multiplier Chart (that I'm going to post later). I only include wide releases (100+ screens) on that particular list since the vast majority of them don't expand beyond their initial screen count, and if they do, they only add a few screens after debuting.

Promare, and other limited releases (typically anime films), typically expand significantly after debuting if they open higher than expected and/or are very well-received, so their multipliers will naturally have a huge advantage over wide releases and would dominate the all-time best multiplier list.

Fly Me to the Saitama was the only 2019 release to make the list, but it's very notable since it's a comedy. Comedies are far less likely to achieve multipliers this high when compared to animated or live-action dramas. If you exclude some of the animated films on the list that had some comedy elements, then Fly Me to the Saitama is only the third actual comedy on the list above (Thermae Romae and Ted being the other two). There's a reason it earned the most Japan Academy Prize nominations (12) this year, and could become the first comedy to win Best Picture.

Also, Sumikko Gurashi: The Pop-Up Book and the Mystery Child may just barely make the list (currently sitting at x11.98), but it's nearly finished and could very well close just shy and miss by 0.02. There's no reason to get it to 12 (this is my own list with no actual benchmarks or milestones). 10s/11s, while very impressive, are just a lot easier than a 12 (or higher) which requires that extra appeal.

A difficult weekend to predict since Saturday is a first of the month, meaning it's a national discount day (40% off movie tickets). These days always see a big boost in admissions, but the increase in revenue is much smaller due to the discounted ticket prices (though still typically stronger than normal). And as a result of the first falling on a Saturday this weekend, everything (Parasite aside) will likely experience sharp declines on Sunday to keep the weekend itself relatively normal.

The #1 spot is very contested this weekend between the debuting AI Amok, which I'm predicting with much uncertainty edging out the victory, and holdovers Cats and Parasite. Cats played fine over the weekdays and pre-sales today are good, so I think legs will be fine (Japan will already become its #2 overseas market after two weeks). And Parasite actually looks like it's going to enjoy another weekend increase, and it'd be quite a feat if it manages to rise to first place. All three appear on course for ¥175/200 million.

Yeah, Sunday will be considerably lower than Saturday this weekend, as well as versus last Sunday since a lot of would-be-business on Sunday will have gone to the Saturday. And remember that the percentage changes on Saturday you see are in admissions only, and therefore are likely 15/20% or so less in revenue.

For example, Frozen II was flat versus last Saturday in admissions, but its probably down around 20% in revenue. Still good, just using it as an example.

I'm honestly a bit surprised the Saturday holds (or increases) weren't stronger yesterday. The weekend holds will probably come in a little worse than my forecast.

That makes sense. Avg ticket price will be way lower plus sunday business would be impacted big time. Frozen is down about 45% on sunday at this point compared to last week. so overall drop in gross wont be as good as what it looked yesterday. So discount saturday does not help at a gross level just sells few more tickets.

But Corpse, Promare neither was a limited release (opened at 200 theaters), nor did it receive any screen count expansions, being down at 121 at its 8th weekend if memory serves me. Do you known a website where it tells all the upcoming movie releases in Japan? The reason why is that I been wondering when will New Mutants come out in Japan.

And... I'm going to exclude Promare from my All-Time Multiplier Chart (that I'm going to post later). I only include wide releases (100+ screens) on that particular list since the vast majority of them don't expand beyond their initial screen count, and if they do, they only add a few screens after debuting.

Promare, and other limited releases (typically anime films), typically expand significantly after debuting if they open higher than expected and/or are very well-received, so their multipliers will naturally have a huge advantage over wide releases and would dominate the all-time best multiplier list.


But Corpse, Promare neither was a limited release (opened at 200 theaters), nor did it receive any screen count expansions, being down at 121 at its 8th weekend if memory serves me. You are correct! I forgot it opened on 200 screens, was thinking 65 or 70 for some reason. I'll edit it onto the list. :thumbsup:
