Surprised that TLK wont open above $1B. It's performing over BatB in all major markets except UK. Already broke records in some countries. The original was bigger tha BatB in Japan. Is it because of the talking animals (Jungle Book, Alvin and the Chipmunks)? Narnia was big

Narnia also had human characters. Even when you go back and look at the history of animated films, you'll find that those that feature talking animals (as their main cast of characters) have almost always disappointed in Japan. This is a key reason, besides the humor that just didn't translate, that Dreamworks Animation never really had a hit in the market.

The Lion King isn't disappointing like Dumbo or The Jungle Book, it just doesn't appear at the moment to be on the same level as other Disney live-action remakes (Alice, Beauty, Aladdin). And I say "at the moment" because it's very early to make this claim. It may not open as high as them, but it is opening right before a major holiday week, and if the reception is strong, it could turn things around. A lot of unknowns right now.

Does this make Zootopia the most successful talking animal movie in Japan? Other than Finding Nemo, I guess.

I've noticed that wikipedia articles sometimes claim that pre-1997 Ghibli movies were the biggest movies of their given years in Japan. How do they know this, and are lists available for these given years? I'm interested in 1988, kind of.

You can check http://eiren.org/toukei/ to look at the list of biggest films dating back to 1980. Just remember that the distributor income was the method of tracking films instead of overall gross (revenue) before 2000.

Oh very cool. Can't find Akira. Thought it would be there.

It wasn't a box-office success.

Yes, though The Adventures of Milo and Otis is above Zootopia. I think they're the only three films to have earned over ¥5 billion.

Oh I see. I saw something on wikipedia that implied it was, but I guess that was not a reliable source, or that it counted video sales.

It sure had a release date that implied Toho thought it would be a box office success though. Right in the middle of July.

Also Finding Dory, but no one remembers that movie.

It didn't earn more than ¥1 billion in distributor income, which was generally seen as the mark of success in the market. Wiki has an uncredited box-office total of ¥1.5 billion, which if true, meant it just missed the distributor income threshold, which is why Eiren doesn't list it.

There's also some article that said it made $49 million at the worldwide box office that is cited on wikipedia. That's the one I find suspicious.

The Battle of the future Kings this weekend. The future King of the Pirates, Monkey D. Luffy, up against The future King of the Pride Lands, Prince Simba.

One Piece Film Stampede, the movie celebrating the 20th anniversary of the anime, delivered big on its first day, earning the biggest Friday this year. The last three films have all opened above ¥1 billion, but as the first Friday release in the franchise, will Stampede follow suit, or did it burn off enough fan demand to miss the mark?

The Lion King did pretty well, though the Friday start does suggest it won't be an uber-blockbuster in the market. That said, this is a film where its opening day (even opening weekend) could be misleading. Obon Festival is literally around the corner (Monday), and as one of the three major holiday periods in Japan, it can easily change a film's trajectory.

Rather than a Weekend Forecast, I'll be tracking these films with hourly admission updates over the weekend, and provide posts to see how they compare to other big openers over the past several years.

I wonder what caused the recent explosion in the grosses of One Piece and Detective Conan movies. The absence of Miyazaki maybe?

With the release of Strong World, Eiichro Oda (author/creator of One Piece) became a chief supervisor of the One Piece films. He writes the story, designs the characters, and provides the team with hundreds of pages of sketches.

His direct involvement immediately got the many, many fans (it's still far and away the most popular manga in the country/the world) interested in the films versus just the anime viewers. The films are much higher quality now ("Film" in their titles isn't for nothing), and have been released three/fours years apart. Since Strong World, Oda has also created loose-canon chapters that lead up to the release of the films. And Toei Animation has also been dedicating the month leading up to the release of the new films with original episodes that tie-in with the story.

Oh cool. Doing the traditional Japanese workhorse auteur thing.

I still think the Detective Conan grosses are a related phenomenon.

Looking at Saturday's pre-sales:

The Lion King pre-sales are almost 40% below Aladdin's. This isn't surprising, and it shouldn't be seen as "disappointing." This is the weekend before Obon Festival begins, and it will make serious money over the upcoming weekdays.

One Piece Film Stampede is clearly frontloaded. It burned off a lot of demand on Friday (it's the first film in the franchise to open on a Friday), and its Saturday is likely going to see a noticeable decline, which is pretty rare in the market. It'll take a miracle for it to open above ¥1 billion over the weekend frame, though its 3-day total will probably be roughly on par with the first three days of release of the previous film.

Weathering With You is looking at a potential sub-10% decline. If that happens, it could defend its position at #1 in its fourth weekend. And if it does... it's probably going to be #1 well into September.

All of this means we could be in store for a three-film race for the #1 spot this weekend.

And because I'll get asked, Toy Story 4 is also aiming at a sub-10% drop, so it's going to easily manage the new competition as well.

LOL. It's no problem. It is important, and relevant, to still mention. While it's very likely to outgross Finding Nemo and become Pixar's biggest film in the market, a lackluster weekend hold and poor Obon Festival Week boost could make it difficult.
