Post Re: Japan Box-Office: The Boy and the Beast Update
Image

Director Mamoru Hosoda (second from left), joined by the film's cast members, held a press conference in Tokyo yesterday in celebration of the completion of his upcoming film The Boy and the Beast.

And the film's preliminary screen count was also released; debuting on 458 screens nationwide on July 11th. This makes it the 7th widest domestic release in history, and the 4th widest for an animated feature.

Mamoru Hosoda's previous three award-winning feature films will be broadcast on NTV leading up to the theatrical release of The Boy and the Beast.

Mamoru Hosoda and his recently founded studio, Studio Chuzu, are looked upon by Japanese industry leaders and audiences alike as the successors to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. The Boy and the Beast is also scheduled for release in 36 other countries, and will receive an Oscar qualifying run in the US later this year.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Japanese News and Discussion [Week 2]
Japanese News and Discussion [Week 2]

>Tokyo Is The World's 'Most Livable City'.
For its annual "Quality of Life" survey, global affairs magazine Monocle typically evaluates cities based on four main factors: availability of international flight routes, cycling commutes, good lunch spots and public libraries. (Traveling, exercising, eating well and reading a lot? Sounds to us like a recipe for thriving!) This year, however, the magazine added 22 new metrics, including cost of living and the price of a cup of coffee. That led to some major changes, including a new city at the number one spot: Tokyo, Japan.

"It manages to do something no other global metropolis can: provide a great quality of life for those who live there and also visit. From culture to security, food to courtesy, it has everything covered," Monocle says of Tokyo. "London and New York, take note."

>'One Piece' enters Guinness World Records as most printed manga.
One of the biggest manga hits of the past 15 years is most certainly “One Piece.” You can talk about ninjas or titans, but the perennial favorite for top manga has been about those pirates of the Grand Line. Of the many treasures they have encountered during their journey, they have now uncovered something that is truly one of a kind, a Guinness World Record.

The official “One Piece” website was happy to announce that author Eiichiro Oda and the manga “One Piece” are going in the record books as the comic book with the most issues published by a single author.

Back in 1997, Shonen Jump published a brand new manga about a stretchy boy and his quest to become the “King of Pirates”. As of December 2014, “One Piece” can firmly plant its flag as the “King of Comics”. On June 15, a ceremony was held in Tokyo to celebrate the record.

Between August 1997 and December 2014, “One Piece” has been printed 320,866,000 times worldwide in over 30 countries. That number was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as “the comic book with the most issues published by a single author.”

>New Chinese islands don't settle sea disputes: Japan
Japan warned China on Wednesday that its extensive land reclamation in the disputed South China Sea does not make ownership “a done deal”, after Beijing announced it had almost finished its controversial island-building.

The rebuke came after Washington urged China against militarisation of the area, saying it risked escalating tensions, even as satellite pictures have shown a runway long enough to let even the biggest aircraft land. It also came as details emerged of a joint exercise between Japan and the Philippines, as the relationship blossoms between the two regional powers most prepared to push back against Beijing’s perceived rising aggression.

“We hold serious and significant concerns about the unilateral actions aimed at changing the status quo, which are bound to increase tension,” the Japanese government’s top spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

“With the completion of the reclamation, we must not accept the land reclamation as a done deal. We demand (China) not take unilateral actions that bring irreversible and physical changes,” he added.

Responding to the comments, Beijing countered that “it makes no sense” for Japan to press China on the issue.

“China has indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and we do not need to prove this by building facilities on the islands and reefs,” foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a regular press briefing, using the Chinese name for the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

Japan has long criticized China’s attempts to change the status quo unilaterally and by force, mindful of its own dispute with Beijing over islands in the East China Sea.

>Mad Max: Fury Road is expected to do pretty well this weekend and easily debut atop the box office (unless Love Live! pulls off a spectacular hold). The original films were fairly popular, with the first earning about ~¥1.8 billion in 1980 (14th biggest film of the year). The sequels didn't match the box-office receipts of the original film, but still earned at least ¥1 billion at the box office as well.

The stellar reviews and success of Mad Max: Fury Road in the US and other markets has helped generate interest in the comeback of this franchise, which can already be seen in the impressive seating/showtimes this weekend. Maybe it can flirt with a debut above ¥300 million?

Image
>The Pearls of the Stone Man will see an expected soft debut, but should open above ¥100 million which wouldn't be too bad. It's probably a film that's going to play very well over the weekdays, too, so its legs may turn out to be strong.

Image
>Ghost in the Shell: Evangelion is debuting on just 107 screens this weekend (71% being accounted for above), but if the success of the Arise: Border films in limited release over the past year or two are any indication, this new film should do very well over the weekend. It's always hard to predict near limited releases, but this one could surprise a bit and I won't be shocked if it makes the Top 5 (or Top 3) over the weekend.

Image
>Ju-on: The Final (also known as "The Grudge"), is, as the title states, the final film in the horror film series. Last year's film, The Beginning and the End, was pretty disappointing at the box office, so I don't think they're many who care about this series anymore. However, since it's supposedly "the final" film, maybe it can post a decent debut. It'll be lucky to crack the Top 5, regardless, though.

Image
>Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld is the latest film from director Takashi Miike, and while his films generally perform well, this one's a likely dud. It has some poor reviews and what I'd consider little appeal. The low screen count of just 90 (73% accounted for above) is also a sign that there's little confidence in this film. It'll probably barely make the Top 10.

12 (07) ¥44,000,000 ($360,000), -39%, ¥1,115,000,000 ($9.1 million), Initiation Love (Toho) Week 5

>Mad Max: Fury Road is outpacing Tomorrowland's opening weekend from two weeks ago, but not by much. A debut above ¥300 million might be a little difficult if it doesn't perform significantly better in the evening, which it should (kinda is already in the afternoon showings), and Sunday comes in strong, too. So far, it's looking like a success (especially for Warner Bros., who haven't had an imported film open above ¥300 million since Gravity), and legs will likely be strong.

However, without a guarantee opening above ¥300 million at the moment, this is allowing Love Live! The School Idol Movie a slight opportunity to repeat at #1, since it's looking at a better than expected hold due to being more of a weekend film anyway, and additional events happening over the weekend once again.

>The Pearls of the Stone Man is looking like a very soft opening, as expected, and may just reach the ¥100 million mark over the weekend. It'll really depend on how well it plays tomorrow, though.

>Ghost in the Shell: Evangelion isn't quite as strong as I anticipated, and while I imagine evening business will be pretty solid, the low screen count is probably going to prevent a ¥100 millon+ debut. But it's still looking at a successful debut.

>Ju-on: The Final is trickier to predict because it's playing much wider outside of the usual locations than most films typically do... Its ticket sales at the usual locations, however, are pretty bad so unless it's doing very well elsewhere, it shouldn't come in higher than 8th/9th place over the weekend.

>Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld is a dud.

1,181 (-46%), [77/85] - Kakekomi (Week 6)
1,082 (-38%), [118/119) - Poison Berry in My Head (Week 7)

The race at the top is very, very close.

Love Live! The School Idol Movie won at the usual locations with a great hold, but it's a near limited release with 61% of its overall screen count accounted for above. And Mad Max: Fury Road is the standard wide release that the usual locations accounts for 43% of its total screen count above.

So if we use appropriate multipliers for them, they both sold around 105,000 tickets on Saturday. It's too close to say which one will rank #1 for the weekend right now, it all comes down to how they perform on Sunday. Both films are aiming for around ¥300 million ($2.5 million).

Yeah. You'd think that a film that's so driven by a fanbase that it would fade fairly quickly, but that's apparently not the case with this one.

Love Live! has kind of become the premier late-night idol otaku anime, with single/album sales, merchandise sales, and possibly box office results now overtaking the highs set by K-On! and Madoka Magica in previous years.

Their 12th single, 'Angelic Angel', featured in the movie will be released on July 1st and it'll be interesting to see how high first week sales are for that one:

And... Sunday didn't really help determine which film will come in at #1 this weekend.

Based on the usual location's admissions above and using appropriate multipliers, Mad Max: Fury Road is probably the favorite, in admissions anyway, as it should have ~180,000-190,000 admissions for the weekend but Love Live! The School Idol Movie isn't far behind with ~170,000-180,000 admissions. And both films should have high avg. ticket prices, though the latter is likely to have the higher average judging by last weekend's very high avg. ticket price.

This is a situation when the other chains, mostly Aeon Cinemas, will decide the weekend's #1 film and where avg. ticket prices are crucial.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates soon.

>Love Live! The School Idol Movie had some stage greeting over the weekend that I didn't account for, so after including those, it's probably going to repeat atop the box office in its second weekend, though it isn't certain yet.

>Mad Max: Fury Road still has a chance at opening at #1 but even if it fails, it's looking at a solid debut in second place. And, also, if the estimate can improve just a little bit (2.6%), it'll outopen The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies to give Warner Bros. their best opening so far this year, too.

I expect legs will be pretty good for Max, too, so a potential total of ¥2 billion could be doable, which would make it the highest-grossing Mad Max film, outgrossing the ~¥1.8 billion earned by the original film. It'll be close.

>Ju-on: The Final is hard to gauge as most of its locations are outside the usual locations, but it looked good at Aeon Cinemas (its primary chain). If the estimate is accurate, it'll be down 13% compared to last year's film. The eighth Ju-on ("The Grudge") film, which includes the original TV movies, certainly doesn't appear to be taking the franchise out on a high-note.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/20-21)
This was mentioned on Deadline.

"Fox International Productions’ Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, already a massive local hit in Japan at $30.9M"

Your source had the movie at $30.2 million, it'd probably be barely higher as of this weekend so do you know where the difference between figures is coming from?

$30.2 million was the last total before any more updates were available, but it has been playing since (I think it's been two weeks since then now?). It's still playing in 89 theaters as of this past weekend, it's just fallen well outside the Top 25 films.

It'll probably remain in theaters until either the July 11th or the July 18th weekend.

You will also run into fluctuating USD figures due to the daily exchange rate changes. What a film's total was last week in USD certainly isn't going to be the same the following week.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/20-21)
Oh yeah I see you had it at $30.4 million so it may have have been at $30.5 million by this weekend.

I ask because according to Rentrak it made $7 million this weekend and $37.9 million total. Deadline says it made $30.9 million so that would make sense.

What doesn't make sense is why the figure doesn't seem to be taking into account Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

So it's either made more than what Rentrak says or there's something else to it.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/20-21)
I'm not familiar with which days count as the weekend frame in the other markets, but often times when a film opens on Friday in Japan, Deadline/Variety will include the Friday gross, the 3-day total, as the "weekend gross", when it's not since Japan has 2-day weekends (just Saturday and Sunday).

I don't think Japan would be exclusive in this, so there could be some confusion regarding weekend earnings from the other markets, too?

If Mark Schilling is responsible for the Variety report, he'll usually note the difference or publish correct weekend earnings.

Anyway, the film didn't crack the Top 25 films at the usual locations this weekend in Japan, meaning it sold less than 2,000 tickets there (43% of the market). So best-case scenario would be about 4,000 overall admissions over the weekend, for a 10th weekend gross of ¥5.5 million ($45,000) or so. I don't know if that'll help you figure out where the $7 million is coming from or not.

Weekend Admission Notes:
Love Live! The School Idol Movie was #1 in weekend admissions.
Ghost in the Shell: Evangelion was #9 in weekend admissions.
Cinderella fell out of the Top 10 in weekend admissions.

This weekend was certainly a roller coaster with Mad Max: Fury Road and Love Live! The School Idol Movie changes places at the top depending on which estimates, and sources were being utilized. And in the end, they share the weekend victory.

>Mad Max: Fury Road came out on top in its debut weekend in gross, but came in second place in admissions with 174,807 ticket sold over the weekend across 666 screens.

The film had a particularly high avg. ticket price of ¥1,515, suggesting its primary audiences are adults. That may not sound too surprising, with its R15+ rating and all, but it means very few seniors who may have been fans of the original films in the 80's turned up over the weekend.

The latest Mad Max release is expected to finish above ¥1.5 billion but with good reviews and the chance at good WOM as well, it might reach a total closer to the ¥2 billion ($15 million+) milestone. All-in-all, pretty good numbers.

>Love Live! The School Idol Movie falls to second place in its second weekend, but actually stayed atop the box office in admissions with 188,061 tickets sold over the weekend.

The idol film only dipped 25% from its opening weekend in admissions but after a sharp decline in its avg. ticket price (down 13%), its second weekend gross fell by 35% causing it to come in second place. It's continuing to track nearly identically to the last Madoka Magica film, another anime idol film, from a few years ago, so expect a total close to ¥2 billion ($15 million+).

>Sea Town Diary pulls off an excellent second weekend hold, but that's not why I'm going to include it in this week's analysis. Its earnings over its past weekdays were 24% greater than its opening weekend gross, and 64% greater than its second weekend gross above.

It's not uncommon for films to earn more than 50% of their total over weekdays (a big reason films have very long runs in Japan), but their weekend drops are generally higher than normal as a result. However, when a film is having higher weekdays than weekends while still holding well over the weekend, it's a sign that the film will be in for a long run. I think there's a good chance that latest could reach ¥2 billion ($15 million+), for a multiplier of over 8 which is notably strong for a June release.

>The Pearls of the Stone Man came in at a disappointing sixth place, only selling 67,490 tickets across 244 screens over the weekend. This one certainly wasn't expected to do that well, but a sub-¥100 million debut is rather poor.

>Ju-on: The Final debuted in a very, very close seventh place, selling 61,023 tickets over the weekend on 144 screens. The debut is 10% lower than the last Ju-on ("The Grudge") film, a figure that Showgate probably wasn't expecting after declaring the latest film as "The Final" film in the horror film series.

>Shinjuku Swan exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone this week, becoming Sony's first domestic film to reach the milestone. It's also on track to overtake Annie to become their biggest film so far this year.
