Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Spring Is Finally He
I was looking into it some following my previous post, and I have less confidence it it now. For being a huge success in the U.S. and also in many other markets, its interest in Japan appears to be very low by not even being among the Top 100 searched for films right now on a couple popular movie sites (its "likes" are also low). Its release date isn't very good, either, since opening between Spring Break and Golden Week kinda shows the lack of confidence in its box office potential.

Sony being the distributor is worrying, too. They just haven't been capable of really turning out any notable performances outside of Spider-Man and Resident Evil in recent years.

Maybe things will prove differently once its release day gets closer, but $20 million is probably as much as it'll manage if things go well.

Coco has just won "Best Animated Feature" and "Best Original Song" at the Oscars. I'm hoping this builds up sizeable buzz for the film in Japan before its release.

It'll help, but I don't know about it creating "sizable" buzz. Disney/Pixar is so well-established, and they typically win Best Animated Feature, so it's not surprising or anything. If any Disney/Pixar fans were doubting Coco, though, the two wins last night should help secure their support.

The one to watch is going to be The Shape of Water. It just opened this weekend in Japan, and having won Best Picture AND Best Director is going to get the film a lot more attention over the next few weeks.

He's saying that in the U.S., the cost of producing animated films (probably referring to traditional animation, but he's saying animation in the general sense) is so high, that it often results in the creators (director, writers, etc.) losing their enthusiasm for making a quality animated feature since collecting the funds ends up becoming the forefront of the entire production. And if the necessary funding can't be collected, it kills the creativity behind the project and it's something that needs to change in the domestic (U.S.) market.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Spring Is Finally He
I'll post the Weekends Actuals and Chart Updates as usual later this evening, but until then, here are the results of the top openers this past weekend since I couldn't do estimates accurately:

Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island, the thirty-eighth entry in the series, easily broke the franchise record by opening to ¥843 million ($7.9 million) on 717,000 admissions -- that's a staggering 22% above the previous record holder, last year's Doreamon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic. It's also one of the Top 20 biggest opening weekends for an animated film in terms of gross, and one of the Top 15 biggest opening weekends for an animated film in terms of admissions.

The Doraemon franchise has been a stable franchise, typically opening around the ¥500/600 million mark and finishing with ¥3.5/4.0 billion, but this year's film broke out above the franchise standard by a considerable figure, and will likely exceed the ¥5 billion ($45/50 million+) blockbuster milestone, becoming the first to achieve that status. Detective Conan, another once stable annual animated franchise, did the same thing a couple years ago and hasn't looked back, so perhaps Doraemon will follow suit as well.

Black Panther delivered a good second place debut, earning ¥310 million ($2.9 million) on 199,000 admissions over the weekend. The opening isn't incredible or anything, and is just barely within the Top 20 among all Marvel/DC films, but it is higher than the average Marvel/DC opening.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island, the thirty-eighth installment in Japan's most-attended film franchise ever, smashed the series record set by last year's film by 22%, selling a magnificent 716,629 admissions across 381 screens, overwhelming the weekend competition in the first weekend of the Spring box-office season.

The Doraemon franchise has shown signs of growth in recent years, but nothing like the spike this year's entry experienced. Even if it only develops legs among the weakest in the series, it's still likely to reach the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone to become the first entry to achieve the status.

>Black Panther earned itself a good start in second place, selling 199,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 631 screens, and 343,150 admissions since opening ahead of the weekend last Thursday. The debut may appear underwhelming, and while it's nothing particularly special, it's still higher than the average Marvel/DC release by a comfortable margin. Look for the Wakanda King to finish a bit above the ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) mark.

>The Greatest Showman falls to third place, experiencing a harder, but still respectable, third weekend versus La La Land from last year. There's nothing to suggest it'll suddenly begin seeing bigger drops, and with Spring Break approaching in the next couple weeks, it should finish above the ¥3.5 billion ($35 million) mark.

>The 15:17 to Paris manages to crack the Top 5, likely due to the draw ability of Clint Eastwood in the market. The poorly received latest from Eastwood sold a mediocre 91,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 237 screens, and 164,155 admissions since opening ahead of the weekend last Thursday.

>The Shape of Water ends up missing the Top 5, but look for it to climb the chart (or remain very stable) next weekend following its Best Picture and Best Director victories at the Academy Awards on Sunday. Its weekend frame figure is still an estimate, but since opening early ahead of the weekend last Thursday, it has sold 139,866 admissions on 260 screens.

Interesting that James Bond doesn't make it there despite so many films. Japan even has 'James Bond' volcano erupting right now.

There's a chance it's at the bottom of the admissions list (or just below the Top 10) since data for the 1960's films is unavailable. The 60's had very low ticket prices, though, so I'm pretty confident in saying the franchise is comfortably below the Top 10 on the grosses list (maybe within the Top 15 though).

The franchise was popular in the 1970's, but began to decline in the 1980's and didn't appear on the top-grossing films of the year (minimum of ¥1 billion earned in revenue or distributor income) between 1984-1999. Based on the data I have, I estimated the franchise has earned around ~¥23-25 billion with ~20-22 million admissions, which doesn't include the 1960's releases.

The James Bond franchise has been successful in Japan, but none of the films that data is available for have been able to achieve hit status, and none have been able to make the yearly Top 10 again since the mid-1980's. It probably took a couple films in the 1960's (Connery) to become popular, then it peaked in the mid-1970's (Moore), declined in the 1980's (Dalton), declined even more in the 1990's (Brosnan), and has increased a little in the 2000's/2010's (Craig).

Glorious! Japan corrects the mistake that the Academy made last year. La La Land is wonderful and deserves its win.

And what's this The Third Murderer all about? Seems like an actors film. If they haven't yet, the studio should probably re-release it. Or does it not work like that in Japan?

Hi Corpse, with Coco coming out next weekend, is there any indication of how presales are for it? Are they at the levels you anticipated a page or two back?

Yeah, I'd classify it as an actors film. Re-releases/expansions are very rare, even in this case, and I haven't seen any news regarding it.

Not yet. Unless it's a very fan-driven release, pre-sales don't typically pick up or indicate anything until shortly before release day. Japan's not a "you must see this opening day/weekend" market. I'll keep you updated on it, though. I'll probably provide regular updates (hourly for portions) next weekend since it's going to be a major weekend.

Doraemon is still doing incredible business (its second weekend looks to rival its predecessor's opening weekends), so it could remain at #1 for a third weekend next week, and the debuts of Coco and Chihayafuru: Musubi will be good/great and will be in contention for #1 as well.

Ah excellent, much appreciated once again and I look forward to a very exciting weekend :)

>Doraemon easily repeats atop the box office for a second weekend, and while its opening weekend was crazy enough, its second weekend might be even more impressive because it's on par with the opening weekends of the biggest debuts from the many previous films. The thirty-eighth film in the long-running franchise is pretty much locked now to exceed the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone, becoming the first film in the series to achieve the status.

>The Greatest Showman is still doing incredibly well -- its weekday business is most impressive -- and has locked up a total north of ¥3.5 billion ($35 million) now, and has a good chance of exceeding the ¥4 billion ($40 million) milestone as well. Despite the lack of award buzz, and no Oscar boost, it's been keeping pace with last year's La La Land.

>Black Panther experienced the usual sizable second weekend decline for a Marvel/DC film, though it is slightly better than the average drop. The global smash is heading toward a total around ¥1.7/1.8 billion ($16/17 million) in Japan, which is relatively small compared to most other markets, but it will be impressive here.

>Last Winter, We Parted delivered a decent start for Warner Bros., and with Spring Break approaching in a couple weeks, it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>The Shape of Water is clearly receiving a post-Oscar boost after winning Best Picture and Best Director, remaining flat in its second weekend (possible it enjoyed an increase) following a very strong weekday performance that bested its opening weekend by a solid 40%. It remains to be seen how it holds hereafter, but it's set to become the highest-grossing Academy Award for Best Picture winner since 2010's The Kings Speech, and might be the first to reach the ¥1 billion milestone since then as well.
