That JW:FK increase is wonderful!

Any chance I2 may take the top spot given it's increasing more WoW than Code Blue?

It's unlikely, but never say never. The Top 10 probably won't change their rankings at any point this week unless Ocean's 8 comes in fourth on Wednesday (because of Ladies' Day), or if One Cut of the Dead surfaces (the near limited release makes it hard to project).

Surprising that MI6 took over I2. This is the first time it has happened over a weekday since their release.

By the weekend JW2 should cross TLJ as the second biggest movie of the year. Corpse do you think Code Blue can achieve the same?

I think Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will still be a little shy (probably within just ¥100 million) of Star Wars: The Last Jedi after Sunday. And if it is shy, it'll surpass it next Monday or Tuesday.

Code Blue will exceed ¥7 billion after Sunday, but it'll need a few more days to pass The Last Jedi (I'm thinking next Wednesday or Thursday). And when it does, it'll also overtake Fallen Kingdom not soon after as well.

One quick question Corpse. How is it that only Ocean's 8 was released this weekend when it's one of the most lucrative period of the year for BO? I know last weekend a lot of biggies were released but it send that market can expand more.

I'd imagine it has something to do with Japan not being an opening weekend culture. The films that will make the most out of Obon Festival are likely to be the ones with momentum.

Has their been any films that open number 1 at the Japanese Box Office but did not reach 1 billion yen total.

You both answered it. Most films open a week or two ahead of a major holiday period, like Obon Festival, because they have a better opportunity to go into the holidays with momentum and the ability to find an audience beforehand that'll turn up.

If a film opens at the start of a holiday period, or during, it may miss out on the benefit of the holidays because it wasn't able to find an audience in time, and it often has to compete against several big holdovers -- that have already established themselves at the box-office -- for screens/showtimes.

Yes. I'm pretty sure The Little Prince did it a few years ago, and I'm sure they are some others. It is very rare, though, because an opening of at least ¥200 million is needed to open at #1 (and that's on a bad weekend) and multipliers rarely fall under 5.

I can gather a list if you're interested.

I don't think I do! I'll look into it and post a list sometime this week.

Incredibles 2 and Mission: Impossible - Fallout will probably rank high on the list because I don't think they're going to catch Code Blue. And even if they somehow do, Gintama 2 opens this weekend which will probably block them.

I don't think I do! I'll look into it and post a list sometime this week.

Awesome! Look forward to it. :)

Sure make a list whenever you have the time since I know you are quite busy these days.

That just about does it for Obon Festival this year. This weekend will still benefit a little, but due to people traveling it'll more or less perform like a regular weekend. And great start for Gintama 2 on Friday going into the weekend.

I'll post this Weekend's Forecast later this evening.

Gintama 2 is outpacing its predecessor in pre-sales by a fair margin (~15%), and looks to once again debut above the ¥500 million mark, and maybe reaching ¥600 million this time. Live-action adaptations of popular manga/anime haven't performed well in recent years, but the very loyal fans of Gintama brand continue to support it in every way they can. Look for it to finish around ¥3.5-4 billion ($30-35 million) if the weekend forecast is accurate. It's the shonen series that always seems like it's about to lose steam/popularity, just to rises back up once again.

Code Blue will likely be dethroned in its fourth-weekend, but is still going to deliver a strong result in second place. It'll be right on the cusp of the ¥7 billion milestone after Sunday, and will soon overtake Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It's easily going to exceed ¥8 billion ($70 million), a milestone that only seven other domestic live-action films have done before it, and will be aiming for a total around ¥9 billion ($80 million) -- a milestone that only three domestic live-action films have achieved. It's the favorite to win the 2018 yearly crown now, as it'll overtake Fallen Kingdom as mentioned, and should outgross Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (est. ¥8.69 billion).

Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Incredibles 2 continue to remain incredibly close to one another and are aiming to exceed ¥5 billion ($45 million+). Both films are very likely to exceed the blockbuster milestone, and may approach ¥6 billion (~$55 million). I'm leaning toward Fallout being highest earner of the two, since it'll survive the post-Summer drop-off more than Incredibles 2, but it's going to be close.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is still performing very well, and is going to exceed ¥8 billion ($70 million) without much trouble and should reach ¥8.5 billion ($75 million)... But I just don't think it has enough in the tank to finish closer to or above ¥9 billion ($80 million) which is needed to win the yearly crown. Either way, it's looking at a 89-92% retention from the original, which is stellar.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Prisoner of the Sky is an original animated film based on the popular manga/anime series and should deliver a solid debut based on good pre-sales. It's unlikely to open in the Top 5, but a debut around the forecast may be enough to get it above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

One Cut of the Dead is expanding a bit more and will probably see another increase based on its pre-sales. It's pretty incredible how this zombie-comedy managed to stay very relevant in limited release for nearly two months to achieve an expansion (very rare in Japan), and to now be posting these numbers while still in limited release (96 theaters). It's certainly one of the most impressive performances of the year, and may stick around in the bottom-half of the Top 10 for many weeks to come.

What are the expectations for this? Has the franchise performed well in the past or did the sequel suffer the same fate as in America?

Both the original and the sequel bombed. The first film at least managed to earn around ¥350 million ($3.1/3.2 million), but the sequel was barely a wide release and spent one weekend in the bottom-half of the top 10 before finishing around ¥150 million ($1.9 million).

If a film doesn't reach ¥1 billion (~$10 million), then it becomes difficult to get an exact final total unless the figure is released by the studio in some news articles, home video release, etc.

Many bigger drops than expected this weekend, but perhaps it was a result of the incredibly strong dailies leading into the weekend thanks to Obon Festival. Typically, this weekend has seen stronger holds, but it has been six years since the same days have lined up, so the stronger weekdays probably deflated the weekend frame itself.

>Gintama 2, the live-action sequel to the popular anime/manga series, came out on top in its debut weekend, selling 385,058 admissions across 346 screens to give Warner Bros. their biggest opening of 2018. Despite a nice lead in pre-sales versus the original film, though, it ended up opening 2.5% below its predecessor. This is, however, still a very solid result, one that most live-action anime/manga adaptations in recent years could only hope to achieve. The first film was released earlier in Summer, so I don't think the sequel will match its legs, but it should still exceed ¥3 billion and finish near ¥3.5 billion ($30 million).

>Code Blue was dethroned in its fourth-weekend, but still delivered the second strongest hold in the Top 12. The live-action film based on the popular TV drama has exceeded 5.3 million admissions after four weeks in release.

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout drops to third, and sees a sharp decline in its third weekend. Its three-week cumulative total is on par with Rogue Nation, but it'll have a few more days in Summer than its predecessor and should outgross it in the end. Expect a total near ¥5.5 billion ($50 million).

>Incredibles 2 experiences a harsh third weekend drop, but its weekday performance has been so huge, so far, that its cumulative total reflects it true appeal. Its three-week total is pretty much where it was expected to finish following its disappointing opening weekend, and it's on pace to finish around the ¥5 billion ($45 million) milestone.

>The Seven Deadly Sins: Prisoner of the Sky, an original animated film based on the popular manga/anime series, actually managed to achieve a Top 5 debut thanks to the holdovers dropping hard this weekend, and sold a fair 169,095 admissions over the weekend across 274 screens. It'll surely have some frontloading, but I think it'll just barely reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, which would make it a success.

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom sees one of the biggest drops this weekend, but again, following very strong dailies from Obon Festival (among the biggest week-to-week increases last week), its reached a very, very impressive total after six weeks in release. It will overtake Star Wars: The Last Jedi in both gross and admissions in a few days to become the second biggest film of 2018, but then Code Blue will overtake it for the #2 spot not long thereafter. Look for the film to finish around ¥8.5 billion ($75 million).

>One Cut of the Dead expands a bit more, and increases some more. This film has quickly become one of the most impressive performers of 2018, and will likely hang around for quite some time. It's probably going to hit ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), at least, but could go higher. Demand remains very high.
