Yeah... but that special fan screening ticket price is 10x more expensive than normal price tho :funny:

Good thing is that the reaction from those showings is very positive now, the movie distributor decided to make a official release for the movie starting from 10/12.

Hoping some good word of mouth

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: December Release Schedule
First weekend that I'd call "so-so", but that's fine. Last weekend was just down 3%, so a 35%+ decline this weekend isn't exactly abnormal. Most big films do drop over 30% after an inflated weekend after all. It's still the third/fourth biggest, and it did make up for some of the loss over the past weekdays which were really good, making its 8-week total very close to what I was projecting earlier in the week.

And remember that this was the down weekend, and next weekend will be the next up weekend, meaning it'll either see a very small decline, stay flat, or as the numbers have come down, increases become more doable.

I'm going to post Weekend Estimates for the Top 10 again beginning with this weekend, so those will be up in an hour or two.

Yes anyway I think everyone was not expecting anything for this weekend, a bigger drop predictable and no record to beat. Next weekend however is going to be interesting to follow. I hope that for the first time there will be a small increase compared to the weekend before but in my opinion there will be rather a slight decrease like last week.

I also think with the current numbers it should exceed 21.5 million admissions and $275M but after that remains to be seen, anyway it should exceed ¥29bn on Tuesday (or maybe Wednesday at worst)

@Corpse, I have a question, do you think it would have been a better idea to release the film later to better enjoy the holidays (eg end of November or December) and make this film an even bigger success ?

No. Even though it's had the bare minimum in holiday support, it was able to absolutely dominate the screen/showtime counts (far beyond just record levels), which it wouldn't be able to do now with so many films being released. And it's going to be the biggest success of all-time, so... I don't know if it could have been any bigger than that given it's set records that will never be broken in our lifetimes, including beating Spirited Away in a couple weeks. It was the perfect situation in every single way.

Time to begin rolling out the Weekend Estimates for the Top 10 again. :)

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train keeps on dominating. It's almost ¥10 billion ahead of Spirited Away after 8 weeks with almost no holiday support, and will surpass the long-thought unbeatable Hayao Miyazaki film to become the #1 film of all-time (revenue AND admissions) in a a couple weeks or so. Still seems on track for ~¥35 billion ($330 million+) or so, but we'll need to see what it's capable of doing when it reaches the holiday period in a few weeks.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 continues to hold well, and with the eventual holiday boost in a few weeks, it'll likely get over the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone. This is much lower than the original film, of course, but a lot of factors have contributed to it under-performing, so getting a gross around the standard of the annual films in the franchise is good enough.

>Takizawa Kabuki Zero 2020 debuts in what I'd consider a surprisingly strong third place, which was clearly helped by stage greetings or fan events on Sunday. It's difficult to estimate what it earned this weekend as I suspect its average ticket price is probably quite high, so it could come in higher than I've estimated.

>Fate/Grand Order, at least the first film in a two-part series (a second film was announced for Spring), wasn't able to match the success of the recent Fate/stay night films in the overall Fate series, but this is still a decent opening. Not being animated by ufotable likely hindered it. It'll be very frontloaded of course, so I don't believe it'll reach ¥1 billion (~$10 million), but the holidays and a likely 4DX expansion later in its run could eventually get it there.

>The Witches had a disappointing start, especially since Anne Hathaway is a draw in the market, but I question how much it was actually advertised. It was likely just released with little marketing since Warner Bros. didn't give it a particularly impressive release (267 locations). I believe this one could have done better if Warner Bros. had given it proper marketing and locations.

>Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone also disappointed, I think. It's hard to really gauge if this is a bad result though since re-releases in generally don't perform well in the market. The series does have a large and loyal fanbase, but perhaps even they didn't want to dish out the high ticket prices to see it in 4DX since they likely own every possible home video release. This is a one-week engagement. The next two films in the Rebuild series open over the next week weeks, also as one-week engagements to help promote the release of the very long-awaited (8-years) final film on January 23rd.

Overall, great way to begin a packed December. The Top 10 is down a respectable ~19% versus the same weekend last year.

Kimetsu no Yaiba economic impact currently estimated at ¥270 billlion, according to Dai-ichi Life Research Institute Inc.

"The total includes ¥85 billion book sales, over ¥50 billion in sales related to the mega-hit movie and more than ¥130 billion in sales of related goods, the think tank said."

Nice. I think this is best it could have done in terms of hold this weekend.

Next weekend for sure. The Dec. 26-27th weekend is very likely (final giveaway event, start of winter break for students), as is the Jan. 02-03 weekend (New Year Weekend, break for adults). It's possible that Jan. 09-10 will be as well since that Monday (the 11th) is a holiday.

I would say by next Wednesday, yeah, but it could do it a day or two earlier. And yes, becoming the #1 all-time before Christmas is the goal, and will likely happen before then, too. And if it indeed does... it'll have become the #1 all-time film with just TWO single-day holidays.

from 30B to 30.8B is a long way at this late in the run without any boost really....
this movie was released in the worst time in a year for a box office run for any movie, 2.5 months away from significant holiday period boost....... and it has high chance to become no1 grossing movie. how opposite!

I noticed something, maybe I'm wrong but I have the impression that Demon Slayer almost caught up with Frozen 2 during the same period because during his 9th weekend (12/12-13), Demon Slayer will surely stagnate around $6M-$6.5M, while Frozen 2 during its 4th weekend (12/14-15) had registered around $7.1M, so the numbers recorded during the same period are very close.

It's pretty crazy to see that, anyway after its 4th weekend, Frozen 2 had racked up another $55M, with the new year extended week, the giveaway weekend that will stay and the absent competition (Frozen 2 was competed by Jumanji 2,vStar Wars 9 and others ... .), let's hope Demon Slayer can also add $50M-$60M after his 9th weekend

@Corpse it's unheard of to see a big hit like Frozen 2 get caught up on its 4th weekend by a movie that's on its 9th weekend, right ? It shows just how HUGE Demon Slayer is
