Post Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan 22 Debuts (Sun. Update
Incredible doesn't even describe how strong its Sunday ended up being. It also recorded the highest weekend admissions (that update coming up next) since 2015, and I believe it sold over 1 million tickets over the weekend frame alone (not even including what it did on Friday).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan 22 Delivers Record Deb
I'm estimating that Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, the twenty-second film in the franchise, opened between ¥1.30-1.35 billion ($12.1-12.6 million) on 1,025,000-1,075,000 admissions over the weekend frame. And since opening on Friday, I'm estimating a 3-day total of ¥1.65-1.70 billion ($15.3-$15.8 million) on 1,300,000-1,350,000 admissions.

As long as it exceeds ¥1.3 billion and 1 million admissions over the weekend frame, here are some key accomplishments:

>4th Domestic Film to Ever Debut With Over 1 Million Admissions.
>4th Biggest Opening Weekend for Any Animated Film.
>3rd Biggest Opening Weekend for Any Film Since 2007.
>New April Opening Weekend Record.
>New Franchise Opening Weekend Record.

Lots of all-time chart updates incoming.

It debuted in third place with around ¥275 million ($2.5 million) and 185,000 admissions based on my estimates (possibly fourth in admissions). It's actually looking at a healthy 30% increase over the first film's opening weekend if estimates hold.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, the twenty-second film in the long-running franchise, obliterates the competition and delivers one of the biggest (fifth) opening weekend in the past ten years. Its number fell slightly versus estimates, but it still set a franchise opening record and is only the fourth domestic film to ever debut with over 1 million admissions, and only the third overall film to do so since 2007, selling an incredible 1,012,000 admissions across 384 screens. And since opening early on Friday, its 3-day total admissions reached 1,289,000.

The Detective Conan films have some frontloading to them, but only achieving the standard multiplier in the series will allow it to exceed ¥7 billion ($65 million+) on close to 5.5 million admissions. If it can manage just slightly better legs than some of its predecessors, it might be able to outgross Star Wars: The Last Jedi to take the yearly crown (so far).

>Crayon Shin-chan: Kung-Fu Boys Ramen Rebellion delivered a good second place debut, selling 314,648 admissions over the weekend frame on 354 screens. And since opening early on Friday, it has sold 334,196 admissions. Its debut is 12% higher than last year's film, and it'll be aiming for a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>Coco holds extraordinarily well in its fifth weekend against a ton of new competition, much, much better than last year's Moana and Sing, both of which fell 40% against Detective Conan and Crayon Shin-chan on this weekend last year. It appears increasingly likely that Pixar/Disney's latest hit may very well reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone.

>Pacific Rim: Uprising debuts in fourth place on 192,791 admissions on 581 screens, and while that may seem disappointing (and it kinda is), it's better than its predecessor opening in fifth place, and its opening weekend is actually 19% higher than it, too. It'll finish around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), similar to the original film.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island falls to seventh place, but like last year's film, managed to mostly survive this weekend when most of its predecessors collapse in week seven. Also, the thirty-eighth film in the long-running franchise exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, becoming the first film in the series to reach this mark -- remarkable.

>The Greatest Showman continues along its incredible path of success, and has surpassed La La Land to become the third highest-grossing live-action musical in the market. It'll be a bit difficult, but it, too, may also reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone if it holds onto enough screens in the coming few weeks.

Incredible opening for Conan.

Great for TGS. I hope it holds on enough screens to reach past blockbuster milestone. Incredible run.

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will easily earn a second weekend atop the box-office, but that's not surprisingly whatsoever. Friday was "close", but Detective Conan will probably double it over the weekend frame.

Ready Player One is up about 17% versus Pacific Rim: Uprising last week, which is a good sign that it can debut above ¥300 million this weekend. A ¥300 million+ debut a week before Golden Week begins will be enough to probably get it above the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone, but a ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) total would certainly be doable, too.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will easily repeat atop the box-office after its record opening weekend last week, and may set a second weekend franchise record. Its cumulative total will be right around the ¥3 billion milestone after its second weekend, which puts it on track to exceed the ¥7 billion ($65 million) milestone.

>Ready Player One isn't going to breakout, but as long as it comes in above ¥300 million over the weekend frame, it'll probably be good enough to maintain solid theater presence through the upcoming Golden Week holiday period (beginning April 29th) to reach a respectable ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) total.

>Coco will remain in the Top 5 in its sixth weekend of release, and after Sunday, will have outgrossed a number of previous Pixar films, such as Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Inside Out. It'll probably continue to play well over the next few weeks, and the Golden Week holiday period just might benefit it enough to reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone.

>The Greatest Showman will celebrate its tenth-weekend in the Top 10, and while it won't be able to climb an higher than fourth on the all-time highest-grossing live-action musical chart, its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone is looking pretty good.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (04/21-22)
2018 is off to an excellent start as the first third of the year comes to a close.

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer is looking at a ¥7 billion+ ($65 million+) total.
Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island will finish around ¥5.3 billion ($50 million).
Coco is probably going to reach ¥5 billion ($47/48 million).
The Greatest Showman may also reach ¥5 billion ($47/48 million), as well.

All four films will be on the Yearly Top 10 Chart (unless the Summer is crazy strong), with Detective Conan likely being in the Top 3/5.

All four films also achieved various records or notable accomplishments besides achieving blockbuster status (if Coco and The Greatest Showman make it). And if Coco and The Greatest Showman reach ¥5 billion, that's four blockbuster films for the year already. Most years average five-to-seven blockbusters (¥5 billion+), so 2018 is almost in that range with 8 months to go.

And The Boss Baby's performance is also definitely worth mentioning. It'll end up near ¥3.5 billion ($32/33 million), which is certainly impressive enough, but it became DreamWorks Animation's highest-grossing film in the market by outgrossing Shrek 2, and it'll end up beating it by almost 40%.

Yikes at most of the drops this weekend. The weekend before Golden Week begins (April 29th) can often see steep declines, and while these are pretty similar to the past few years, I just thought they'd be a little better since GW is a day later than last year. Golden Week is one of the three strongest weeks of the year at the box-office, so the days leading up to it are typically weaker than normal.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, however, held just fine, and if estimates hold, actually held better than most of its predecessors in its second weekend (including the last two films). It'll achieve the biggest second weekend in the Detective Conan franchise, and should earn itself the eighth biggest second weekend for an animated film if it holds. Expect a total between ¥7-7.5 billion ($65-70 million) with 5.5 million+ admissions.

>Ready Player One came in a little better than my forecast, and delivered a very respectable second place debut. As long as it's not unusually frontloaded, it should be on target to finish around ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) with the benefit of Golden Week coming up soon.

>Coco was holding better than many past Spring Disney/Pixar/Illumination releases, but it fell inline with most of them in its sixth weekend of release -- although a sub-50% drop is better than films like Moana or Sing. This drop does, however, make reaching the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone fairly difficult, so it needs a very healthy Golden Week if it wants to achieve that goal.

>Pacific Rim: Uprising may have made some history this weekend, and not the kind it wants to be known for. It's very likely to have dropped over 60% in its second weekend, which is already one of the biggest second weekend drops I can recall for a major wide release, but if it comes in closer to 65%... I'm willing to bet it's a Top 5 all-time worst second weekend decline. I'll do some research into this over the next few days.

>The Greatest Showman is pretty much in the same situation as Coco regarding its chance of reaching the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone. Its drop this weekend is "fine", but it'll be entering its eleventh weekend and will fall out of the Top 10 next week, so it could end up suffering severe screen/showtime cuts... We'll see, it'll be close.

Hi Corpse,

Do you expect IW to debut at #1 ? Based on Age of Ultron, it seems to have a good chance in revenue, unless it falls from its predecessor and Conan increases next week, but in admissions it seems like Conan could have the upper-hand.

Avengers: Infinity War should debut at #1 in both revenue and admissions, but it'll probably be pretty close. I'd say it's very likely in revenue, while fairly likely in admissions; but again, it'll be reasonably close. However, over the full Golden Week holiday period, I could see Detective Conan potentially taking back #1 at some point.

I feel that the Avengers brand has established itself enough to match its predecessors (Ultron did only drop just over 10% versus the original in Japan), and with the inclusion of Spider-Man and even Doctor Strange, it could end up beating them. The "finale" factor may come into play as well, and "final" entries (if they're advertised as such) tend to outperform expectations.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (04/21-22)
Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer came in comfortably above estimates and delivered an even more insane second weekend. Actuals put its second weekend in the Top 20 all-time, and the 6th biggest for an animated film (1st for an animated sequel). It's also the 8th biggest second weekend of the past 10 years. And, of course, its second weekend sets a new franchise record.

Avengers: Infinity War will need to be firing on all cylinders this upcoming weekend to dethrone it now.

All the weekend actuals aren't available yet, so I'll wait until this evening to post them, but I'm going to update the Biggest Second Weekend Charts above in a few. Based on the numbers released so far, actuals look to be up across the board versus yesterday's estimates.

With this second weekend, what are the odds it manages to take the highest-grossing movie among all these different animated franchises title from the first Yo-kai Watch movie (at 7,80 billion) ?

Fair chance. If it exactly matches the holds that last year's film had from this point on, it'll actually hit ¥8 billion ($75 million).

Weekend Actuals will be up soon.
