But wouldn't it be bigger admissions and equal gross because of the discounts? Given the capacity its selling off there just does not seem much room to grow.

Yes. Frozen II, just last year, is a good example of this happening on a large scale. Not as large as Demon Slayer, not even half as large (...), but it's the biggest example on record. Frozen II's second Sunday fell on December 1st (national discount day), so it saw a huge increase that day (and over its first Sunday) and managed to improve upon its opening weekend admissions (3% I think?). But it dropped 11% in revenue due to the cheaper tickets.

But Frozen II isn't an ideal example because despite being a huge release, it still had plenty of seats to sell and room to grow in its second weekend (admissions).

But nothing can be used as a precedent for Demon Slayer since it's operating on a different tier than any other film ever. It might not fall to the ceiling of the biggest films before it until its fourth week. Think of its first three/four weeks as extra money/admissions to add to a normal uber-blockbuster just beginning its run. :|

I don't like saying "wait and see" as much as the next person, but it's still a "wait and see" scenario, I believe. And since nothing has performed at this level (it's still outperforming everything by over a 2:1 margin), it makes it difficult (impossible, really) to find a precedent to help predict it.

But... it's looking quite good.

And we need to see how much of an effect the primetime showings of the anime episodes has on the movie as they air over the next seven weeks. This isn't to be underestimated in the slightest. TV is still quite popular in Japan (dozens of programs get 5 million viewers, many get near 10 million, and a handful can still do 10-15 million viewers on a weekly basis), so 5, 10 million people or more, potential new viewers, could be seeing this on KTV every Saturday until December given the primetime slot.

Even if it fell 50% this weekend 30B was a possibility but with this kind of drop I think it is much more likely now and Spirited Away will finally fall.

If that character does appear in any new trailer or key visual (poster), I hope it's incredibly brief and/or obscured somewhat (silhouette, shadow, or something).

They've done an incredible job keeping that character out of any marketing so far, and I think their appearance and role in the movie is a key factor in its success by giving it that extra wow factor. Anime-only audiences going in this movie are certainly in for one. It'd be very nice to see the character animated and everything, but their impact is quite significant and would be better experienced during the movie first, but that's just my opinion.

Or maybe wait a month or so to include them in the marketing.

The ABEMA broadcast with new pv, visual and info should be at 9pm JST IIRC. Could be a similar deal as Ufotable's approach for Heaven's Feel III, with hardly anything being showed on trailers at first but a new, spoilery trailer being released a little while after the movie's release.

That said, the drop is looking pretty good. And aside from broadcasts on national tv, the series has been tearing it on streaming services too. It's first on netflix JP and i assume performs similarly elsewhere. So that's another way for people to get into it and then watch the movie.

While I doubt it'd be overly spoilery, I'd advise anyone who hasn't read the manga up to volume 8 not watch any new trailer unless we confirm it's safe first.

Saturday estimate will be posted pretty soon.

I'll also post the Biggest Saturday's at the usual locations (~70% of the market) with ANY Saturday a film has had above 200,000 admissions there since 2014. I've never had to do this outside of opening or first Saturday's, because most films only get a first Saturday above that mark (a couple have more than one though), but since Demon Slayer is going to have...a lot of them there, not to mention the strong likelihood of it securing the Top 4/5 Biggest Saturday's on the entire list in the weeks to come, here we are.

Second Saturday Estimate: ¥1,476,000,000 ($14.1 million) / 1,110,000 admissions. (Off 13/14% versus last Saturday.)

This is the second biggest Saturday of all-time, only behind its own Saturday last week. Its second Saturday is 40-50% higher than the previous Saturday record before it claimed the top 2 spots.

Demon Slayer became the first film last weekend to ever sell more than 1 million admissions in a day, TWICE (last Saturday and Sunday), and it's added a third day to that list in its second Saturday.

So 10B is locked up by this weekend. I'm guessing next weekend will tell if it will come down to earthly records or continue to ascend and reach 15B in 17 days.

And for reference, before I break out these charts as well in the coming days:

The fastest film to ¥5 billion was Howl's Moving Castle with 10-days. Demon Slayer beat that in 4-days.
The fastest film to ¥10 billion is Spirited Away with 25-days. Demon Slayer beats that tomorrow in 10-days.
The fastest film to ¥15 billion is Spirited Away with 36-days. Demon Slayer is guaranteed to beat this, but when. Under 20-days seems possible.

Will you be updating Demon Slayer's ascend into all time biggest movies list now? I believe after this weekend it should be in Top 25 all time biggest movies in Japan.

On reddit, people keep linking to this thread for all Demon Slayer news. But its funny that all these threads have pictures of your avatar Zagreus attached to them instead of Tanjiro. :funny:

Supergiant should be paying you for free advertisement.

I switched to Thanatos today, too. :funny:

Glad this thread continues to provide a lot of people valuable information regarding the box-office for Demon Slayer, as well as other non-box office news for it, too. And hopefully it gains Hades another new player, or two, or three.

(Hello, reddit.)

Yeah, I'll update that one on Monday/Tuesday after actual figures come out. Depending on the actuals, it'll be ranked between 32nd-36th all-time after Sunday, its 10th-day in release. It's then going to skyrocket up the list in the following seven days, getting close to the Top 10 all-time after its third week, I believe.

Fun fact: If you would take the 10-day total for every other film in history, they wouldn't even make the Top 200 films with their gross. Japan is a market more about pacing versus sprinting, and this just tells you even more how unprecedented Demon Slayer's performance is so far. It's not simply breaking every record so far in its run, and re-breaking those old records again now in its second week (and probably again in its third week).

Wonder if the presale for Sunday also looks good? :/
And the new trailer will come at 9pm night Japan time? It is quite late. I thought it would be at noon.
