These queues are reminiscent of old lines we used to see for the biggest midnights in US. Good times :)

So, based on these numbers, how would you say it's faring compared to your projection?

So far, so good.

I was projecting that it'd reach 1 million admissions today, becoming the first film to ever sell 1 million admissions in a single day. In order to do that, it has to reach a minimum of 650,000 admissions at the usual locations and have crazy rural admissions, but I think it'd fall a bit short with 650,000 since that'd suggest 900,000 or so admissions overall (still a record for a single day, mind you). It really needs to do 700,000 admissions (preferable a tad higher, say 720,000 or so) at the usual locations to reach 1 million admissions overall.

As I said, showings after 6PM are almost all going to be 90%-100% full. If it's near 400,000 come 6PM (or higher, obviously), then its chances of reaching 700,000 (and thus 1 million overall) is pretty good.

I'm working on a rough biggest single days ever list right now. It's rare for single day numbers to be released, unfortunately, so they'll mostly be approx. figures.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Here is a list of biggest single-day admissions, approx. (single day admissions are rarely reported):

~805,000 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2nd day, first Saturday)
~790,000 - Frozen II (9th day, second Sunday)
~760,000 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (1st day, first Saturday)
~725,000 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (2nd day, first Sunday)
~660,000 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (3rd day, first Sunday)
~625,000 - Frozen II (2nd day, first Saturday)
~620,000 - Toy Story 4 (3rd day, first Sunday)
~600,000 - One Piece Film Z (1st day, first Saturday)
~585,000 - Frozen II (3rd day, first Sunday)
~560,000 - Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire (3rd day, first Sunday)
~540,000 - One Piece Film Z (2nd day, first Sunday)
~500,000 - Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (3rd day, first Sunday)

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will almost certainly get over 900,000 today, a Friday, and 1 million remains doable. None of the days above are Fridays. Nothing comes to mind that may have even come near 500,000 admissions on a Friday. And by the end of the weekend, its first three days will all likely take the top 3 spots on this list. Hopefully we can get some official reports on prior film's figures once Demon Slayer makes these records official.

And films not on the list, but would likely make it if any single-day data was available: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Howl's Moving Castle, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. However, I believe only the first Harry Potter may have had a day above 700,000 admissions. All the others likely had their biggest days between 500,000-600,000.

Also, films that had previews added to their opening weekends are excluded, because they were added to the weekend (not an individual day). That said, I wouldn't bet on any of them actually appearing on this list (at least not near the top, maybe a few 500,000-600,000 days) though since previews often accounted for a significant portion of the weekend admissions/gross.

Frozen II 2nd Sunday was 790k admits. That would be 2nd highest, though I recall it being said biggest single day at time.

You're right. I just added it. Was it reported as the biggest single-day ever? I know it recorded the biggest single day on record at the usual locations (592,000). Let me know.

I also added the 2018 Detective Conan's first Sunday. No official report, but using the weekend multipliers and usual locations to overall location ratio it had, I get ~501,000 as the approx. figure. Again, not official, but it would have been crazy close if it missed that mark.

I'm also going back to check the original Frozen. I don't think it had any single-day above 500,000 admissions, but it had some crazy dailies when Golden Week came around, so it may have snuck one or two in there during the holiday period.

I probably shouldn't be using 500,000 as the cut-off for that list though. If a film just barely hit 1 million admissions over the weekend (or even 900,000+), chances are either its Saturday or Sunday was above 500,000, and that's a decently long list to compile without any official single-day numbers.

Alright, so I'm going to get some sleep. The next few hours, while still going to be huge, is sort of the transition from the "slower" afternoon showings to the jammed packed evening showings. I'll be back in time for the 7PM update, and will fill in the 4PM-6PM updates then as well.

The occupancy so far is 38.5% with about 45% of day yet to go. Think its safe to assume 650k is happening in usual locations.

Well, it has just hit 400k as of 17:46 and is ramping up, so it seems to be on track.

It has reached 464k with 76% of day done. Occupancy rate has started boosting, with 320k more seats to go, considering 75% occupancy will give 240k more for 705k final. Can be better easily.

Edit: The last 20 minutes were 89%

If it manage 85-90% from here, we are looking at 730-740k

The morning and afternoon showings were already crazy and record-setting, but I knew the evening showings is where it'd really excel. Just imagine tomorrow, because it's going to be like the evening all day long!

Updates coming.

It's very close to breaking the all-time single-day record now, possibly less than 50,000 admissions away with three hours of sold out/nearly sold out showings nationwide to go, in addition to what will also be a strong final hour of the day. It also has some showings, a few dozen I think, that begin after midnight, but those will be counted towards tomorrow. I'm assuming they'll be added to the first update for Saturday.

And this is its Friday, that could "only" manage 30-40% occupancy or so in the afternoon due to work and school. Wherever it finishes today, Saturday will probably beat that by 20%, maybe?

And with that update, it broke the single-day record at the usual locations, and certainly broke the all-time single-day record as it nears 900,000 admissions. If the 10PM update is around 675,000 (or better, clearly), it's likely going to become the first film to reach 1 million admissions in a single-day.

Every theater is having a simultaneous showing tomorrow at 8:40am that'll feature a live-broadcast with the cast and crew, and a special performance by LiSA . All these showings are sold out nationwide. Chances are they'll use this opportunity to announce the all-time record.

Last 20 minutes had only 55% occupancy. 93.9% shows are done and only 82k shows remain. I wonder if it may miss 700.

700 will need 67% occupancy. Certainly do-able.

Here's another completely bonkers possibility:

If Friday does come in above 1 million admissions (or close), and Saturday is even higher (say, 1.2 million), and finally Sunday should finish the weekend out with around 1 million as well. ~3.2 million admissions in three days, or even a little shy of that, will likely result in a 3-day opening near or above ¥4 billion (~$40 million).

So, its 3-day opening will actually be higher than the TWO WEEK totals of all but 8 or 9 films. And if it really explodes over the weekend frame (more so than its already record levels, mind you), its 3-day opening could be higher than the two-week totals of all but 5 or 6 films.

It's probably going to fall a bit shy of 700,000 (and 1 million overall, it depends on the rural locations) at the usual locations, but 5ch members have reported that 109 cinemas (very popular in the late-night) website isn't loading properly and they're unable to purchase a ticket. Aeon Cinemas' website was also down in the early morning for an hour or so, so there could be some omissions that the programmers will address after the day ends/in the morning.

Regardless though, this is a new record, and is the first film to have a single-day above 800,000 (HP7's Saturday could be disputed a bit, since it's not official), and the first film to have a single-day above 900,000 admissions. We'll see if it got to 1 million later via an announcement this weekend, or when the numbers are reported on Monday.

Its Friday is also around 3x higher than all the biggest known Friday performers.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
@corpse Mimorin has posted information regarding some error. What is that about? How much negative/positive impact could that have.

Also the late shows are having very low occupancy. Just 20% or so. I thought they would be Sold Out or close as is in ROW. Are late night shows weak in Japan.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
The programmer is reporting that some numbers are missing from Aeon Cinemas and 109 Cinemas, as expected, since their online systems crashed today due to the traffic. Aeon Cinemas was down very early in the morning (7-9am range), while 109 Cinemas has been offline for the last hour or so tonight (this is why the late-night sales have slowed down). At this time, they're suggesting adding 2,000 to the total to alleviate some of the missing sales.

Also, they're reporting ahead that the sold out 8:40am showings at MOVIX cinemas tomorrow isn't being processed correctly and won't be added to the hourly updates tomorrow until a later part of the day. They're all sold out, so they'll just need to be counted manually and added later on, so this isn't too much of an issue. Tomorrow's first several updates will just appear lower than they really are, or will be added at the end of the day.

We can probably expect some similar hiccups tomorrow and maybe even on Sunday, too. The positive news is that just looking at various theaters, Saturday is going to be bigger than Friday by a solid margin from its crazy reservations (huge gains in the afternoon showings versus today), so the online systems at Aeon and 109 (and anywhere else) may not be under as much strain from people going on to buy tickets shortly before the shows since more have been sold. We'll see.

11PM - 666,553 (~933,200)......................12AM
FINAL -

Note: Usual location admissions is the first number (70% of market), while I'm providing a projected overall admissions number in (parenthesis).

Note: It's been confirmed by the online programmers that Aeon Cinemas was down early this morning, so the first hour or two are missing some sales. Also, and more importantly since the bulk of business for Friday is in the evening/late-night, 109 Cinemas also went down around 9:30PM, so some sales are missing from them as well; they're still offline. 109 Cinemas has a lot of late-night showings compared to most other chains, so this has certainly lowered the last couple of updates.

When the day concludes, I'll include the suggest 2,000 admissions the programmers have recommended to add to the total (and will add more if a further update is released). I'll also provide a projected range that the total may fall in since there's some unaccounted for sales.

And Aeon Cinemas has crashed, again. This time for maintenance. Reservations for the film began at midnight on Monday, and Aeon crashed immediately and was down all of Monday, half of Tuesday, early this morning, and are down once again.

I bet those trying to buy tickets at 109 Cinemas (since they're the more popular late-night chain) but being unable to likely flooded Aeon. To think two chains would be crashing this late of night is kinda crazy though. I expect a lot are probably trying to buy tickets for tomorrow and Sunday right now, too.

Only a few of Aeon's locations would have showings start after 11PM, and probably just a handful of after-midnight showings, so it won't impact the overall sales much, but it's annoying. I know you can't prepare for the biggest film to ever open to crash your servers, but they've been way more affected than any other chain, so their online systems certainly need upgraded for the future.
