>La La Land debuted at #1, selling an impressive 289,979 admissions over the weekend frame across 308 screens. And since opening on Friday, its 3-day admissions reached 402,709.

The Almost-Best Picture-Winner at Sunday's Academy Awards delivered the third-biggest opening ever for a live-action musical (behind Mamma Mia! and Into the Woods). It's more impressive, in my opinion though, since it's an original musical with very little known names (in Japan). I'm sure it'll have a nice run (likely earning $25-30 million), but I really wish it had won Best Picture because its potential in Japan would have likely become near blockbuster levels ($40-50 million).

>Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale saw a sizable second weekend decline, but it's having some surprisingly good weekdays which is helping to stunt the frontloaded factor a bit. It depends on how its screens/showtimes are handled once the Spring films release next month, but it still has a good shot at reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million).

>xXx: The Return of Xander Cage got off to a soft start, selling 114,515 admissions over the weekend on 401 screens. The second film, xXx: State of the Union didn't receive a theatrical release in Japan back in 2005, but compared to the original xXx, the third film declined a significant 57%.

>Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone over the weekend, achieving commercial success status, and giving Tim Burton another successful film in the market. It's only ~$2 million shy of reaching the $300 million milestone at the worldwide box office, and Japan should be able to get it there - just barely.

>Your Name. achieves its 27th-consecutive week in the Top 10, breaking Spirited Away's record of 26-consecutive weeks in the Top 10. This was one of those records that most never saw falling, yet it's been broken. And after 27 weeks in release now, it has sold a mammoth 18,842,069 admissions.

Its weekly grosses are becoming lower and lower though, and it'll need to win big at this upcoming weekend's 40th Japan Academy Prize Ceremony (it needs to win Best Director, Best Animation, and Best Screenplay) or its time in the Top 10 could come to an end in a couple weeks.

Three February openers this year (Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, La La Land, Partners IV) made the Top 10 Biggest Opening Weekends for the month. This is already an impressive accomplishment for the 2017 box office to achieve, let's hope this is an early indicator of more to come throughout the year.

Zootopia or Sully will probably win. If Sully wins, it'll be Eastwood's 6th win.

I'm rooting for Eastwood. But that is crazy how popular he is in Japan.

Alright, this may sound confusing, so read carefully (:P):

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opened on November 23rd, 2016. Therefore, its debut weekend (Nov. 26-27) is a 2016 opening. That's easy enough to understand, so here's where it gets a bit complicated:

Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, Inc.) dictates any film that opens prior to December (the beginning of the Box Office Year in Japan) that grosses ¥1 billion or more, OR more than 50% of its earnings from the start of December, as a release for the following year. That's what happened with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and why it is counted as a 2017 release. Its opening, though, was in November, so that's counted as a 2016 opening weekend.

Pretty much every industry in Japan operates on a December-November calendar, so you'll sometimes notice some "unusual" situations. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, for example, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of 2016 at this year's Japan Academy Prize Ceremony, but it was released on December 18th, 2015... and that release date is exactly why it's a 2016 release, and wasn't eligible at last year's Academy Prize Ceremony.

Omg I had no idea Anno directed this! :yummy:

I'll have to seek it out first chance I get.

Edit: Oh, just realized you were referring to Shin Godzilla and not ITCOTW.

Haha my bad, I should've mentioned it and "ITCOTW" is directed by Sunao Katabuchi (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunao_Katabuchi) Tbh, I've never heard about him until today, but he previously worked with Miyazaki in Kiki's delivery service as an assistant director.

Sully won Best foreign btw
Is it possible that in this Corner will stay in Theatre til next Oscar? It also won Kinema Junpo best film award (first animated feature to win since Totoro) and three of Mainichi film award. Director's previous animated feature Mai Mai Miracle stayed in Theatre for 7 months. I think Oscars may have a thing for film about slice of life in the middle of the war.

Will In This Corner of the World see a noticeable box office boost from this? It had already fallen out of Top 10 last weekend.

We'll have to wait and see if In This Corner of the World gets a boost, or rather, what size that boost will be.

The problem though is that it fell out of the Top 10 last week, and it's been cut to a single showtime at the majority of its theaters going into this weekend, so it's almost impossible to make a Top 10 comeback this weekend even with a large increase... its pre-sales are up versus last Saturday, but it doesn't have as many showtimes/screens to take advantage of now.

This weekend also begins the Spring Box Office Season with the release of Doraemon, which will be followed by numerous releases over the next few weeks that will demand the screen/showtime attention of theaters.

The Weekend Forecast will be posted in an hour or two.

Your Name. missed out on Best Animation and Best Director, although the two wins (Best Screenplay and Best Music) does make it the only animated film in history to win multiple awards. It's looking to stay flat, or see a minimal decrease this weekend, so a 28th-consecutive week in the Top 10 might be doable (it broke Spirited Away's 26-week record last week).

Sully winning Best Foreign Language Film is expected. Clint Eastwood is nigh-unbeatable in the category; this is his sixth win.

The beginning of the 2017 Spring Box Office Season officially kicks off this weekend with the annual release of Doraemon, every first weekend of March, and it's looking to once again open very, very well.

>Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic is the 37th Doraemon feature film and like many of its annual predecessors (especially in modern box office terms ~2006-), is going to score the biggest opening weekend of the year so far. This year's film is currently performing on par (in fact, slightly better) with last year's film based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, so look for an opening of ¥600-650 million ($5-6 million) or so with over 500,000 admissions.

>La La Land performed extraordinary well over the weekdays due to the post-Oscars effect, and its second weekend is also looking strong. If it had won Best Picture at the Oscars, it probably would have dropped in the single digits, but even though it missed the biggest award last Sunday, it's clear the breakout musical is going to have a long run in the market.

>Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale must be having a fan event or giveaway, or something, this weekend because it's outpacing last Saturday by a significant margin (~20-30%). I don't know if it'll also have a special event going on tomorrow as well, but if it does, it'll definitely see a large weekend increase; however, for now, I'm going to be conservative and go with a small increase - we'll see!

>Assassin's Creed is only going to debut in fourth place, but with pre-sales indicating a debut above ¥150 million, and possibly as high as ¥200 million, Fox must be satisfied. The ranking itself isn't impressive, but unless it turns out to be very frontloaded over the weekend, its projected opening should be enough to get it to the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone - impressive for this film/genre.

>Your Name. is aiming to achieve its 28th-consecutive week in the Top 10, having already broken the long-standing record last week set by Spirited Away (26-consecutive weeks in the Top 10) with its 27th-consecutive week in the Top 10. It didn't win the major awards at the 40th Japan Academy Prize Ceremony, but the two awards it did win (Best Screenplay and Best Music) might be enough to give it at least a small boost (at least one that'll probably keep it in the Top 10 this weekend).

Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic is currently outpacing last year's film by ~27% at the same point-in-time (~2PM) for the day.

I'm not expecting it to quite keep this pace up, but if it does, it's going to easily exceed 600,000 admissions (maybe even 650,000+) over the weekend frame to become the biggest opener in the franchise ever in admissions, and possibly even in revenue.

If it comes in on the high-end of the updated admission projection (650,000+ admissions), that number is going to be quite the challenge for everything else this year to beat. No more than a handful of films have that sort of potential.

At this point, it looks like surpassing Frozen is impossible for Your Name. But it might still reach 25 billion yen, even if it will be a long crawl.

Toho will likely keep it playing until it reaches ¥25 billion. It's not really that difficult of a mark to reach, either, since it'll be less than ¥450 million away after this weekend coming off a ¥50 million+ 28th weekend.

And based on Saturday's results, it's definitely staying in the Top 10 this weekend (28th-consecutive), possibly looking at a single digit decline depending on Sunday. If it can continue to remain in the Top 10 for the next couple weeks, it'll receive a Spring Break boost toward the end of the month.

Update: The 37th Doraemon film ended up beating last year's films first day by 28.4% - highly impressive, and it achieved the biggest opening day ever (in admissions) for the franchise.

Sunday would have to come in usually weak for the film to miss the opening weekend franchise record, so I'm pretty confident in predicting it'll take the record come tomorrow's results. Also, since it's now aiming for 650,000 admissions, it's aiming for the Top 3 Biggest March Opening Weekends as well.
