Incredible that there managed to be back to back ¥1,000,000,000+ openers. Hoping for $100 million or more for BatB.

Weekend Actuals will be posted in about an hour.

Beauty and the Beast came in a bit below estimates, though it stayed above ¥1 billion.

>Beauty and the Beast debuts in Japan ahead of the Golden Week holiday period, one of the three busiest weeks of the entire year, and delivered an outstanding opening weekend. Disney's latest live-action adaptation based on one of their classic animated films sold 729,114 admissions across 773 screens over the weekend frame. Since opening on Friday, it has sold 951,214 admissions over its first three days in release.

Its opening weekend is higher than any other Disney live-action adaptation, besides Alice in Wonderland which it trailed by 19%. It's important to remember that Alice/Alice in Wonderland is a major brand in Japan, so it's not too surprising that the Tim Burton film remains on top in Japan among Disney's live-action adapted filmography.

Any debut of this caliber is remarkable, especially being one week out from a major holiday period. A total over ¥10 billion ($90 million+) is never a lock this early on, but the mark is very much in sight since a multiplier of 9.4 can get it there, and that's certainly doable ahead of Golden Week and with little competition in the typically dead months of May and June.

>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter held quite well in its second weekend, better than the past few films, and easily delivers the biggest second weekend in the franchise history after achieving the biggest opening weekend in the franchise last weekend. Another total north of ¥6 billion ($55 million) is likely, but perhaps it can even reach ¥7 billion ($65 million) this year - this franchise has become a major force in recent years at the box office after nearly two decades of stagnant numbers.

>March Comes in Like a Lion - Part 2 comes in fourth place, delivering slightly below the first film last month, selling 95,991 admissions on 296 screens. I doubt this opening can get it to ¥1 billion though, since Part 1 is currently shy of even ¥800 million, so ultimately Toho has to be a bit disappointed by the performance of the two-part film adaptation of the popular manga.

>Moana was hit hard by the debut of Beauty and the Beast, and while it's still going to exceed the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion, it's not going much higher. Overall, while Disney's latest well-received animated hit has certainly performed well, its legs are quite underwhelming compared to the past three studio predecessors.

>Ghost in the Shell is unable to stabilize, and with many wide openers next weekend for Golden Week, it's unlikely to much staying power left and is going to crawl to the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone.

Corpse, I have a general question about Hollywood films in Japan. I understand that most people generally watch animated films dubbed, but is the opposite true for live-action films? E.g. For Beauty and the Beast, are most of the showings subbed or dubbed? Which one is more popular?

Hollywood films almost always perform better when dubbed, and dubbed showings almost always sell more tickets, though there are some occasions when certain actors or ensembles are big enough draws that subbed showings perform just as well - rarely do subbed showings outperform dubbed showings for any film.

Beauty and the Beast is a fair example (Emma Watson due to her Harry Potter fame, and the popular/known voice cast), though the dubbed showings are still selling a bit more tickets; I'd say it's around 60:40.

That's earlier than Corpse was suggesting but still good enough time to make the final run.

What's the source? I've seen this date floating around (sourced from some leaflet with no confirmation?) lately but nothing is mentioned on the official website or twitter account.

It may well be the date, but we still need official confirmation.

Makoto Shinkai tweet that Your Name will definitely take advantage of 4K Bluray due to more bitdepth color available, but I doubt his claim. With many people express that Garden of Words deserve 4K bluray more than Your Name.

Your Name total 24,924 million yen.
13 million yen whole week, decrease from 17 million yen previous week.
This week should be interesting, while it's golden week, I heard that Your Name decreased theatre.

Apologizes for lack of updates. I was unable to login on Friday and Saturday (I think the forum was down), and the past couple days have been busy.

I'll post the Weekend Actuals in an hour or so. It was a very strong weekend, too, since the first day of Golden Week (Showa Day) fell on Saturday. I'd normally post daily estimates during Golden Week, but my schedule isn't going to allow it this year, unfortunately.

>Beauty and the Beast manages a very, very impressive second weekend increase after debut above the ¥1 billion mark last weekend. Its second weekend is so impressive, that it's the one of the Top 10 biggest 2nd Weekends of All-Time! Its two-week total trails a fair number of other uber-blockbusters, though it is ahead of Alice in Wonderland now (its primary comparison), but the boost from Golden Week this week will make up for that, so I'd say a total over ¥10 billion ($90 million+) is incredibly likely now.

>The Fate of the Furious settled for a distant second place, but its opening is really impressive nonetheless. The eighth film in the series sold 420,058 admissions over the weekend frame across 710 screens, managing a 17% increase over Furious 7's debut weekend. I doubt legs differ much from its predecessors, so a total around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million) looks good at the moment.

>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter slips to third place, but its third weekend sets yet another weekend record for the franchise - biggest 3rd weekend in the series. It continues to outpace last year's film as well, so look for a total around ¥6.5 billion ($60 million) this year.

>Teiichi: Battle of Supreme High had a solid debut, selling 166,089 admissions over the weekend on 291 screens. Toho should be pleased with a total probably near ¥1.5 billion ($13 million).

>Blade of the Immortal rounds out the Top 5, selling 145,348 admissions over the weekend across 331 screens via Warner Bros. WB was likely hoping for a bit more, but the film will prove successful with a total also approaching ¥1.5 billion ($13 million).
