Don't want to speak too soon, but today's holds are looking great for the most part. That might change in the evening/night since more theaters are closing earlier, but there's something I just thought of:

Since many theaters are closing at 8PM now, meaning the last showings must start at 5/6PM, resulting in the majority of students and the working public not having an opportunity to see films over the weekdays while this restriction is in place. I've mentioned this part already, however... Over the weekends, while the restriction is still in place, most films could end up benefitting from those audiences being more available and coming out stronger than normal.

We knew it was the first in Oricon's history to cross the 5 000 000 mark because it was impossible for anything else to do it before Kimetsu no Yaiba.

One Piece #61, which sold 3 382 588 copies in 2011, could only have sold 3 829 239 from February 4th, 2011 to november 22nd, 2020 by adding the yearly average backlog sales. It was impossible for One Piece #61 to sell 1 170 000 more than the average backlog sales : 446 651 from 2012 to 2020. I took One Piece #61 as an example because it was the previous yearly record holder!

As I said to the guy in the other forum, I thought it was a consensus that Kimetsu would be the first thing ever to break the 5 million mark in Oricon's history but we didn't actually have this information

Using average backlog sales will give you this: an AVERAGE. For example, you said that the accumulated average backlog sales from 2012 to 2020 is of 446,651 copies but in 2011 alone, volume #1 sold 545,045 copies. Not all volumes are going to be selling the same and that's why the mathematical possibility would always exist (although I agree with you that it wouldn't make any sense for any of OP volumes to be close to the 5 million mark, let alone cross that mark).

Also, you have been reporting that Kimetsu volume #1 became the first volume in Oricon's history to have sold 4 million copies but we don't have this information either. Actually, given the fact that they have reported the manga becoming the first thing ever to break the 5 million mark, this lead us to believe that Kimetsu wasn't the first thing ever to break the 4 million mark (since they haven't reported as such).

And it isn't that unrealistic to believe that at least one volume of One Piece managed to break the 4 million mark since the tracking started back in 2008.

So Kimetsu having the first volume to break the 4 million mark isn't a fact at all, there is no news reporting this claim whatsoever (while they reported the manga becoming the first to reach 5 million).

Do you have a source for this information? Because I don't think that's true either

I don't think there was ever a time where ALL of the released One Piece volumes were over 3 million copies sold

Even if we assume that during the boost that occurred during 2010-2012 all of old One Piece volumes hipothetically managed to cross the 3 million mark, not all of the ones released in the most recent years had reached 3 million and even the new ones would take some time to reach 3 million copies sold even during peak One Piece

What I mean by this is:

For example, volume #49 sold 1,544,000 in 2008 and it did not ranked in any of the lists of the following years, not even in the first half of the year list. This volume could only have reached 3 million copies during late 2012 and even then I'm not sure of it.

By that time, volume 68 was released in November 2012 and volume 67 crossed 3 million copies in the EXACT same week of the new volume release (the old one crossed 3 million, but the new one was already out)

When volume 69 was released, in march 2013, volume 68 was still at 2.9 million copies sold
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=571859

When volume 70 was released, in June 2013, volume 69 was still to cross the 3 million mark
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=614639

One important note here is that this volume 69 sold 2,750,286 copies in its first 4 weeks, which is the highest a volume of One Piece has sold in its first 4 weeks since volume 66 up until today with the exception of volume 76, who sold 2,761,576. Even this volume didn't cross 3 million before the release of the next volume

So the point is: even if we assume that all of the old One Piece volumes did cross the 3 million mark during the boost, not all of the ones released in the most recent years had reached 3 million (like the case with volume 49, that was released back in 2008) and by the time these volumes crossed 3 million copies, the news one were not crossing 3 million before the release of the next volume.

I don't think One Piece has ever had all of its released volumes over 3 million copies.

We don't need to talk about current One Piece where the volumes are suffering to even reach 2 million copies in the time frame of 1 year.

My point wasn't about the average, it was about the fact it needed 1 170 000 more than the 446 651 average, a difference so important it eliminated the limitations of it. Plus, I didn't do an arranged average in order for it to be the highest possible, to be the closest possible to your point.

To really be faithful to your logic, since they haven't reported as such for One piece either, it implies neither Kimetsu no Yaiba, nor One Piece did break the 4 000 000 mark.

It was mentionned in my earlier posts I was using weekly, monthly, semi-annual and yearly top Oricon yearly rankings provided by the company. Each number they provide are meant to be used and are an announcement in themselves, I'd gladly accept, no I even wish an Oricon biz article (the only resssource I'm missing) stiplutating a One Piece volume sold 4 000 000, something they did when a volume reached a milestone during One Piece glorious years.

I added this phrase in order to reassure the One Piece superfans (I'm one of them^^), thus, I purposely didn't mention the word Oricon in the sentence
Quote:
"at one point, each and every volume of One piece sold 3 000 000" is true
, so I'm a little lost here. Oricon isn't perfect, the true sales numbers lies between the Oricon and circulation numbers. Circulation number that should be between 380 000 000 and 390 000 000 just in Japan, with the initial print for new volumes weakening the past years...

Hello everyone sorry I was in exam period I could not be present too much lately. Demon Slayer finally hit ¥36Bn, with the restrictions and the rise of COVID, DS can still hope to exceed ¥37Bn and 27 millions admissions but ¥38Bn seems complicated, right ? In any case, this weekend looks pretty good and should exceed ¥200mn if like what I expect Sunday is stronger than Saturday. @Corpse, could you show us the ranking of the films with the most weekends as #1 ? So we could see where Demon Slayer would be if he hit 16 weekend as #1

Assuming nothing happens between now and the time it eventually finishes its run, then ¥38 billion and 28 million admissions looks to be the final goal.

However, we probably can't assume that until after the Demon Slayer Festival scheduled for Feb. 13-14 at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center. There's going to be a lot going on that weekend, including the likely announcement on where they're taking the animated series from here, be it new season of the anime or another film (or both). And I wouldn't be too surprised if something is also announced for the current film to celebrate it, perhaps a final, special thank you giveaway or some other means that could further boost it.

I'll post the Most Weeks at #1 list again tomorrow when it's certain that Demon Slayer achieved its 14th weekend at #1 this weekend. I believe it will, but it and Gintama: The Final were closer than I was expecting on Saturday, so Sunday could determine which comes out on top.

My point wasn't the average either. It was the fact that we didn't have the information that you were reporting. The mathematical possibility of the volume reaching 5 million, although ilogical given the context, would still exist. But as I said, I thought it was already a consensus that Kimetsu would be the first thing ever to break the 5 million mark.

My logic was that since they decided to report Kimetsu becoming the first thing ever breaking the 5 million mark, they would have reported as well if the manga was the first thing ever to break the 4 million.

Since they haven't, this lead us to believe that there's a possibility the manga was not the first thing ever to reach the 4 million mark (given the fact that exactly 3 months later, they decided to report the manga being the first one to cross the 5 million mark)

But I didn't say it was a FACT that Kimetsu was not the first thing ever to break the 4 million mark because, just like you said, One Piece didn't receive a report for having reached that number either.

So what I said was: we don't have this information that Kimetsu was the first thing ever to break the 4 million mark. And contrary to the 5 million mark, it isn't that unrealistic for One Piece to have at least one volume who managed to cross the 4 million barrier.

, so I'm a little lost here. Oricon isn't perfect, the true sales numbers lies between the Oricon and circulation numbers. Circulation number that should be between 380 000 000 and 390 000 000 just in Japan, with the initial print for new volumes weakening the past years...

I think I didn't understand what you were trying to say here...

Are you trying to suggest Oricon is missing a significant amount of copies? Oricon isn't 100% perfect, but it's what we've been using to discuss manga sales since forever.

The last reported circulation number for One Piece in Japan was of 390 million copies. So the current printed copies average for One Piece volumes is of 4 million copies.

As you said, the first-print run for the newest volumes is below that average and below its peak, when it reached 4.05 million copies (volume 95 had a initial print run of 3.2 million copies)

What you have to remember is that this old volumes only push the average up because they've received a lot of reprints throughout the years (specially from 2009 onwards).

Up until 2007, before Oricon properly started tracking the sales, One Piece had a circulation number in Japan of 139,000,000 with 48 volumes, which is an average of almost 2.9 million printed copies
https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comme ... urce=share

Which means that, before Oricon started tracking the sales, One Piece didn't have all of its released volumes over 3 million copies either. Not even the printed average was that high.

From 2008 up until now, One Piece jumped from 139 million printed copies to 390 million printed copies with only 49 new volumes been released in this time frame (this is where the printed average goes up, since older volumes received a lot of reprints and the new ones started to increase the amount of copies printed for each volume)

Some interesting notes here: One Piece only achieved a first-print run of 3 million copies in 2010 with the release of volume 57. Before that, all of its volumes had a first-print run below the 3 million mark
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... -print-run

Volume 56, released in december 2009, was the previous record holder with a first-print run of 2.85 million copies. So up until the very end of 2009, all of the One Piece volumes had a first-print run below 2.85 million copies

Ooh, I finally understand where the misunderstanding comes from, you were talking about mathematical possibility while I was focused on data analysis. Basically, it combines maths with market reality.
Please let me try to explain with the 4 000 000 example, if I do my job right, everyone will understand the crazyness of the 5 000 000 theory.

Quote:
The previous yearly record holder One Piece #61, which sold 3 382 588 copies in 2011, could only have sold 3 829 239 from February 4th, 2011 to November 22nd, 2020 by adding the yearly average backlog sales.

Starting with the obvious conclusion : "yes, the 4 000 000 mark might have been reached if the volume behaved abnormally". The next course of action is looking for proofs because if it behaved abnormally, the market can locate the traces with it's tools/trackers.

Oricon gave us not only the weekly top 50 oricon rankings and the yearly rankings, they also gave us some extended version, for example, in the 2016 yearly rankings they gave us a top 200 volume + an additional top 50 from the next shonen jump best selling volumes ; an example for the weekly extended version would be in the Jujutsu Kaisen Oricon sales charts posted by Kenji26, the curious can check, some numbers are impossible to find in the classic weekly Oricon. Those extended versions are the perfect tools to track the anomalies and by now I guess everyone can guess the number of times the One piece volumes contenders appeared in it.

So, no anomalies detected and I estimated the 170 000 difference so important an arranged average wasn't necessary. Indeed, we can affinate the average thanks to the extended Oricon data covering jump titles + factoring the volume #01 behavorial pattern, in some cases, even volume #02 and #03 if seemed necessary. That + analysing Oricon's backlog's history (13 years) of interaction with the average is the reason why the volume #01 argument simply isn't one and is even harmful to the theory.

This isn't over, the data used generously covered till November 22nd, 2020 but Kimetsu easily hit the 4 000 000 mark eight weeks before... I insist, refining the average wasn't even necessary because there were no hints suggesting an anomaly + a significative 170 000 difference.

I took all that into consideration before posting the record list, any help is welcome but basically hearing "Oricon didn't mention it, so I don't trust you" can't be considered such. Data analysts purpose is to give annoucements to their boss, especiallly when the trackers noticed no contradictory element in the market. I thought it was clear I was just a random dude posting data analysis, nothing more, the importance people make of my modest list is up to them. I started the record list because Oricon didn't make any to copypaste^^ and with the goal to help people have a better understanding of the Demon slayer phenomenon, I only post the analysis here, not on any social media or others forums, because I admire Corpse dedications over the years. It's easy to forget the difficulty such a degree of implication represents.

There has always been one other element : the circulation numbers. People love them so much especially because combined with the Oricon numbers, they give us a better picture, they complement each other. I was mentionning the Oricon sales chart posted by Kenji26 earlier, this is what manganym, the one doing them (they are used all over the internet) said about Oricon, just some stuff commonly admitted in the community.

Quote:
Simply put, Oricon is just a tracker and even then there are some places where they don't keep track. A better indicator are of how a series is doing are print numbers but this doesn't come at a regular pace and the conditions of the updates are different (at times they includes worldwide, spin-off, digital, sometimes they don't). Having said all of that, sales are still sales, Oricon is doing a good job in giving us the data. Even if they are not the perfect indicator of how a series is doing overall (it is not their job to be honest) you can really gauge the popularity of a series, and see how external(and sometimes internal) factors affect the early sales of a volume.

With the years passing, a lot of Oricon specialists disappeared, for example the famous Heiji posted a lot about it at one time and this is no longer the case. Circulation numbers are far more pratical, so their attractiveness is perfectly comprehensible.

Sorry if we went offtrack, I don't like to hijack the topic, but a clear comprehension of circultation numbers/Oricon numbers + some low level (the complex one weren't necessary) data analysis might play a role for people interested with manga sales. I really hope everything made sense, I'll answer eventual questions by pm, I prefer this topic back on it's natural course and don't mind not having the last word^^. Finally, sorry for the misunderstanding about mathematical possibility!

You guys are fine discussing this. Last year in the Spring/early-Summer, back when I was posting the weekly Oricon sales charts when theaters were closed, I was thinking about just starting a separate thread, but there's not really any interest outside of this thread I don't believe, so it's cool.

Weekend Estimates will be posted shortly. Holds were pretty good overall, especially for a couple films. In fact, given that theaters are closing earlier in the 11 prefectures that easily account for 80/85% (maybe even closer to 90%) of the entire box office, effectively cutting any shows after 5/6PM, I'd call the holds great or even excellent across the board.

There are now 11 prefectures under the state of emergency restrictions, and theaters have agreed to them and are closing early (at 8PM), meaning the last showing of the day has to begin at 5/6PM. These 11 prefectures account for a vast majority, easily in the 85% territory, of the entire box office, so the evening/night business will be increasingly weak for the next 3 weeks.

However, despite this, everything still performed quite well, and these drops are easily on par with most middle weekends in January, and even better than the average weekend this time of year (in terms of holds).

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train continues its reign atop the box office (even taking back #1 in admissions this weekend), having achieved its 14th-consecutive weekend at #1 now. And after 14 weeks, it has now earned almost ¥5 billion (enough to be considered a blockbuster in the market) more than Spirited Away. Even after all this time, it's a mind-boggling achievement. Look for a finish near ¥38 billion (~$365 million) with nearly 28 million admissions, but don't be surprised if it has some event announced over the Demon Slayer Festival on Feb. 13-14 that could change things.

>Gintama: The Final experienced a large 50% decline, but not too surprising given the giveaway event over its first weekend/week of release. It also has a couple events happening over the next two weeks. Beginning Jan. 22nd, moviegoers can download an app to listen to commentary from the cast during special showings. And beginning on Jan. 29th, moviegoers can receive a limited-print double-sided poster (in collaboration with Demon Slayer again). So it should have a pretty good run over the next several weeks, and I believe it still has a good shot at reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million). Excluding the two live-action films, it needs to surpass Gintama: The Final Chapter's ¥1.7 billion total to become the highest grossing animated film in the franchise.

>Poupelle of Chimney Town enjoyed the best hold in the Top 10, and it was a pretty stellar hold at that. It's going to be more of crawl-type of performance, but if it continues like this for awhile, it could eventually reach ¥2 billion (~$20 million).

>Fourth through seventh place this weekend is very, very contested. At the usual locations, barely 2,000 admissions separate all four films. Natsume's Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor is a limited release, only playing in 65 theaters, so it's probably at a disadvantage in terms of admissions, but most Aniplex releases have higher ticket prices via events and special ticket pricing and such, so it could have debuted above the three holdovers.

>The Promised Neverland is apart of that four-way battle for 4th-7th place talked about above, but I'm giving it a special mention here due to its excellent sub-20% hold. This may have been a result of its primary audience not having a chance to see it over the weekdays since theaters are closing earlier, thus not really giving students/workers a chance to see films on the weekdays right now, but it's great nonetheless, especially if the upcoming weekdays are at least decent. ¥2 billion (~$20 million) is still an uphill battle, but it's keeping its chances alive with its hold this weekend.

¥x82.7 million ($0.8 million), -27%, ¥18.29 billion ($177.9 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

I will try to expand this to the Biggest 17th-20th Weekends in a few weeks. It will only become Spirited Away and Your Name., and then Demon Slayer once it's added, after Week 20 I think unless Bohemian Rhapsody makes it on. Frozen and Avatar had already mostly wrapped up by then, both cut short by Disney. Frozen's home video release was rushed to make a Summer release, and Avatar was largely pulled when Alice in Wonderland took all its 3D screens (hardly anyone was interested in 2D back in 2010).

But Spirited Away and Your Name. (and Bohemian Rhapsody, just need to check it again) were still ongoing for months like Demon Slayer likely will be.

14 achieved. 15 is locked now, too, since Evangelion had to be delayed next weekend. 16 is possible, though the last weekend of January has 3 wide releases. They aren't major releases or anything, but can't rule out one of them taking the top spot. I'll check the February release schedule soon to see if it can indeed achieve 16, if 17 or more is possible.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (01/16-17)
With Evangelion 3.0+1.0 being delayed, when will be the next big movie to be released?
Should we wait to march/april with the Doraemon/Detective Conan releases or something else is scheduled before?

It's rare for anything big to open in January or February, and that's also the case this year as well. They have many releases, just nothing of major interest. Evangelion was only here since it was delayed from last Summer.

The second Fable film (starring Junichi Okada) opens on Feb. 5th, and I believe it'll be the biggest film released until March. The first Fable opened to ¥310.0 million ($2.9 million) and grossed ¥1.77 billion ($16.2 million) in 2019.

March has several notable films as usual though, including: the latest Doraemon, Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney animated film), Monster Hunter (though Japanese audiences typically ignore Hollywood attempts at domestic material), the latest Precure, Kiba: The Fangs of Fiction (based on a popular novel), Tom and Jerry (not sure of its appeal, but it has a respectable theater count), and more.

And April is looking incredible this year, but I'll talk about it at a later time.
