I expect we'll know its final box office figures soon then.

In its 47th week, it's still playing in 5 theaters. Of those, two will be losing it July 28th, and another on August 4th. That means it'll still be playing at 2 locations after August 4th, and neither have end dates listed.

Japan weekends are only 2-days, so 3-day actuals are typically only released for films that open on a long weekend (since it's their cumulative total as well).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Estimates (07/01-02) - Pirates 5
Edit: Oops, didn't notice someone already posted about this. Missed it between all the ranking posts. Well hopefully this provides some context for the number anyway.

somekindofthing wrote:
(NOTE: The above numbers are all based on Oricon reports, and while they're all we've got to go by unless publishers publicly report shipments, it's well known that their estimates do not reflect the full sales of any given DVD/BD release. Any given Oricon DVD/BD number could be 1/2 of the actual number shipped by the publisher, though that can vary a lot. And the shipped number matters most because that's what the publisher gets paid for.)

Recently there was discussion about Kimi no Na wa's home video sales. While it's not out yet, we have a tweet from the Nikkei Marketing Journal saying that Touhou's planned shipment is 1.2 million units: https://twitter.com/nikkeimj/status/887975586001321985

Now, that's the publisher's shipment number. The data we actually see from Oricon is going to be less than that (hence why I said to probably not expect a million in the Oricon reports, let alone anything like Sen to Chihiro's numbers), due to a number of factors:

1. Not all of those 1.2 million shipped units are going to sell through retail first week (in theory, they may never all sell through, but we have to wait and see there).
2. Oricon does not cover every sale made, their reporting is limited and imperfect, albeit the best (partly by virtue of being only) we have.
3. Oricon reports don't count any discs that end up shipped outside of Japan, e.g. if you were to go import this from CDJapan or whatever, they exclude it.

It's still uncommon to get credible sources for shipment numbers, and it's really neat that we got one here - and before release at that. That's going to be a better number to go by than whatever Oricon reports - although we have to be very careful not to mix Oricon data and direct publisher shipments when comparing two different releases. Apples and oranges.

Not yet; it's still hanging out near the bottom of the Top 20. I expect it'll have a few weeks left before leaving theaters.

>Despicable Me 3 opened ahead of the weekend on Friday and delivered an encouraging first day; and based on Saturday's pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, is likely to dethrone Pirates of the Caribbean from atop the box office. Early ticket sales are up about 20% compared to Sing earlier this year, which is another great sign considering how well its impressive debut.

Illumination continues its surprising, and impressive, winning streak in the market, and dare I say it, have become just as successful as Walt Disney Animation and Pixar in Japan in recent years. Pixar, in particular, has struggled in the market this decade following several so-so received films, and audiences seem to be gravitating away from them as a result.

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales could still claim a fourth-consecutive week at #1 if it improves upon its early ticket sales, but either way - whether it repeats at #1 or falls to #2, its four week total will be very close to the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone.

>Gintama will play well in its second weekend, and if it can manage a 35% decline (or better), it's very likely headed for a total north of ¥4 billion ($35 million) since it's proven to be strong over the weekdays as well.

>Pokemon: I Choose You! is unlikely to avoid the typical ~50% decline that the franchise has always experienced in its second weekend, but that's certainly not a bad thing since its two-week total is looking to be 60%+ higher than last year's film, and higher than any Pokemon film since 2011/2012.

>Cars 3 appears to be headed for a second weekend decline that's much higher than the average Pixar film, and after some lackluster weekdays, it may end up finishing lower than about anyone anticipated.

Despicable Me 3's first day is about 8% higher than Sing. This is lower than pre-sales/early ticket sales suggested yesterday (up 20% or so), but still impressive and pretty much locks up a weekend above ¥500 million. Another big win for Illumination in the market; they've really taken advantage of Pixar's faltering state this decade.

A ¥500 million+ debut this time of year will almost guarantee a total above ¥4 billion ($35 million), and ¥5 billion ($45 million) could be doable.

>Despicable Me 3 delivered a clear first place debut, and set a new studio opening weekend record for Illumination, coming in 9% higher than 2015's Minions. The third entry in the ever popular Despicable Me franchise sold a very impressive 478,348 admissions over the weekend frame across 376 screens, and 605,748 admissions since opening on Friday.

There's a good chance it'll exceed the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, especially given this time of year, which would make it only the third non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film to ever reach the mark (after Illumination's own Minions and Sing). Illumination continues its surprising, and impressive, winning streak in the market, and dare I say it, have become just as successful as Walt Disney Animation and Pixar in Japan in recent years.

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales fell to second place in its fourth weekend of release, selling 224,054 admissions. After four weeks in release, the fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has exceeded 3.2 million admissions. The film should continue to post solid numbers throughout the remainder of summer, and is aiming for a total around ¥7 billion ($60 million+).

>Gintama comes in third place in its sophomore frame, but achieved a respectable second weekend coming off a holiday opening frame. Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime sold 238,995 admissions in its second weekend, and has exceeded 1.2 million admissions after just two weeks in release. The film is set to be another hit for WB, and is on track for a total around ¥4 billion ($35 million+).

>Pokemon: I Choose You! experienced the typical ~50% decline that the franchise almost always has in its second weekend, coming in fourth place in its second weekend with 212,248 admissions. After two weeks in release, the 20th film in the Pokemon franchise has already exceeded 1 million admissions -- this is over 60% higher than last year's film after two weeks, and ahead of every Pokemon film of the past five years. It's on track for a total around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million).

>Cars 3 suffers the worst second weekend decline of any Pixar release, and barely remained in the Top 5 in its second weekend. I'm not expecting it to recover too much, though it'll still receive a nice summer/Obon Festival boost, so it's likely going to finish just north of ¥2 billion (~$20 million). Very disappointing result.

>Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection oddly doesn't have an actual released yet, so its figure above is an estimate based on its estimated weekend admissions. If/When a number comes in, I'll update this post.

Also, Your Name.'s final total was reported today and it did in fact exceed that ¥25 billion milestone (fourth film in history to do so). I'll have its total updated on the All-Time List posted a little later.

The DVD/Blu-Ray releases on Wednesday, 48 weeks after its theatrical debut.

Any idea what drove the massive gap between estimate and actuals for Kokosake (Anthem of the Heart) live action? Estimate earlier in the weekend was ¥175m. Also, it's kinda unusual to see a live action version of a franchise do so much worse than the animated version (though I'll always be glad to see animation come out on top, personally).

Ah, figures, the one I was most interested in! I really hope this updated estimate is accurate (tho on 2ch I'm seeing it placed such that it couldn't have done more than ¥106m, sigh), as I'll be pretty disappointed to see it miss the ¥500m of 2nd A's, seeing as how that was a recap and this is all new material. Looks inevitable it'll fall short though. The franchise is well past its prime, but it's still unfortunate.

Re: Anthem of the Heart: ¥175 million is what I forecast going into the weekend. It had solid pre-sales and a sufficient enough release from Aniplex, but unfortunately, it was extraordinarily frontloaded and came no where close to what early ticket sales suggested. Which, I suppose, is understandable since I doubt anyone but the biggest fans of the source material was interested in a live-action adaptation.

Re: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Keep in mind that since it's a late-night anime film, its ticket prices were likely very high (above ¥1,500). It came in 8th place in terms of admissions over the weekend (no admissions released, just the rank), but probably placed 7th in revenue. I don't know why no actual figures have been released for it yet... it's distributed by Shochiku, second biggest domestic distributor, and made the Top 10, so it's pretty unusual.

The drop isn't great, but it's fair enough. Last weekend was a holiday weekend, and while it held worse than I was expecting this weekend, a sub-40% drop is still reasonably okay.

I mention that it's still on track for ¥7 billion ($60 million+) on the last page.
