Post Re: Japan Box Office: Happy New Year!
And the New Year boost is over, at least the weekday boost. Most workplaces reopened on Friday, following the New Year and Bank Holidays, so this Friday saw some big drops versus last Friday. However, the first weekend of January tends to be very strong, so expect this weekend to beat last weekend (which full actuals still aren't available yet due to the three consecutive holidays this past week) with likely increases across the board thanks to families/kids/teens flooding theaters before school begins again.

Also, excellent first day for Kingsman: The Golden Circle. I don't think it'll beat Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the weekend (since it should increase, or remain flat at least), but it's going to easily outgross its predecessor. Japan may become one of its five strongest international markets.

The Weekend Forecast will be posted this evening.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Happy New Year!
Monday was a holiday (Coming of Age Day), so Weekend Actuals are going to be delayed yet again. Now, we're still waiting on LAST Weekend's Actuals (12/30-31) due to New Year/Bank Holidays (only limited imported releases are available), and on THIS Weekend's Actuals (01/06-07).

The 2017 calendar dates really messed with everything.

In the meantime, I'll post Weekend Estimates for this past weekend soon (figures and % changes based on last weekend's estimates), as well as estimates for Monday since it was a strong day (greater than Saturday or Sunday in most cases).

Finally YOUR NAME is opening in Germany as event programming (just 1 show each on Thursday and Sunday). Pre-sales are pretty good...

Corpse, have you ever updated YOUR NAME's worldwide box office?

I think it was a big enough hit in Singapore as well. I believe it made more than $0.1m here. I'll see if I can get some numbers.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised to see Your Name. in the Top 10 again in South Korea last week.

Japan rarely re-releases any film, beyond very limited showings (just a couple theaters), but the film did receive its first TV broadcast on TV Asahi for New Year and achieved a 17.4% rating. Definitely a strong result, and pretty much on par with many broadcast ratings for Studio Ghibli (Hayao Miyazaki) films.

It also rose to #1 (up from #11) on the weekly DVD sales chart (and #4 on the Blu-Ray sales chart) last week in Japan in its 24th week on home video.

Other highlights from its second year since theatrical release:

>2nd Top-Selling media franchise, earning ¥6.53 billion ($58 million) in media sales (DVDs, CDs and Novels/Manga). It only trailed the One Piece franchise.

>2nd Best-Selling DVD & Blu-Ray of the year -- all three versions of the Blu-Ray actually made the Top 10 (#2, #8, and #10).

>4th Best-Selling CD of the year. Also, this is unrelated to Your Name., but since it's definitely worth mentioning -- Namie Amuro's seventh compilation album sold a whopping 2,003,000 copies last year, and 1,113,000 in its first week alone, making it the first album to sell over 1 million copies in one week in Japan since 2004.

2017 was a very strong year for Japan in terms of media sales. Almost every medium experienced significant gains over 2016, including some results being the best in over 10 years (such as the Music Industry and Home Video Game Industry).

YOUR NAME did $275,000 yesterday in Germany... Even though YN was planned as an event release (shows only this Thursday and Sunday), theaters are adding showtimes on Sunday and Sunday next week...

With Sunday shows you can expect at least $600,000 this weekend...

Awesome. Hopefully it continues to do well and sees an extended run.

mark, do you know what the highest-grossing/most-attended Japanese film is in Germany?

Difficult to tell as many sex & violence (or just violent) Japanese movies did pretty well in the 60s & 70s...

It could be ONIBABA (1966) with an estimated 2.25m admissions, but my all-time list only goes to 1965 so far (still researching earlier years)...

Cool, thanks.

If you're able, and have the time, could you compile a list (Top 5/10) at some point? Estimated admissions/totals are perfectly fine.

Over the next couple days, I'll be posting the 2017 Yearly Rankings for various media (music, manga, video games, etc.). I do this every year (or nearly) in early January. The 2017 Yearly Box Office figures will be released during the last week of January.

First up: Music.

Definitely. Not a year goes by without a new album(s), several singles, a tour, and home video releases from the likes of Arashi, AKB48, Kanjani8, Nogizaka46, then one or more of the older (80s/90s) boy groups like SMAP or EXILE (various branches now), as well as one or more of more modern (00s/10s) boy groups like Hey! Say! JUMP or Kis-My-F2. There are around a dozen or so acts that constantly rule the charts at all-times of the year, every year.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2017 Yearly Rankings (Currently - Book
Mostly true, but it's a lot harder for a popular ongoing manga series to decline and drop-off the tops of the yearly charts, especially if it's long (a lot of backlog sales), is receiving a weekly or seasonal anime adaptation, gets theatrical films, etc., to keep sales booming. Interest will just have to nose-dive, think Bleach in its final few years, for that to happen.

Besides, the Top 10 only looks familiar this year because it's consisted of almost the same entries in just the past 3 years (not very long in manga years; just 9-12 volumes worth). But if we look at 2017's Top 10, only three (One Piece, Attack on Titan, and Magi) series' were in the Top 10 in 2013; just two in 2012 (One Piece and Magi); and just one (One Piece) in both 2010 and 2011. And One Piece has been #1 now for ten-consecutive years, so it's the exception; it's not going anywhere until it eventually concludes.

The past few years have seen the rise of a number of more recent series', such as Tokyo Ghoul/Tokyo Ghoul:re, The Seven Deadly Sins, My Hero Academia, and One-Punch Man, which all only began becoming Top 10 staples in the last 2 or 3 years.

And looking ahead: Black Clover and The Promised Neverland both seem like potential series' that could become top-selling manga in the next couple years. The former is receiving a lot of promotion thanks to an anime adaptation that began last Fall, and its manga sales have been increasing as a result; while the latter has become a critical success, and its manga sales are also increasing with every new volume (all six or seven volumes made the weekly top 50 last week). Whenever a new volume release results in many, or even all, prior volumes increasing enough to make the charts again, that's typically a sign of continued growth to come.

Back on a box-office related note: There were only two barely wide releases this week, and the weekend overall is uneventful, so I chose this weekend to post the 2017 Yearly Rankings in other media.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will repeat at #1 for a fifth-consecutive weekend, and drops are pretty standard across the board (-30% range; some a little better, some a little higher). None of the openers made much of an impact, and will probably miss the Top 5. I'll post Weekend Estimates tomorrow.

06 (---) ¥60,000,000 ($540,000), 0, ¥60,000,000 ($540,000), Mazinger Z - Infinity: The Movie (Toei) NEW
07 (06) ¥41,000,000 ($370,000), -41%, ¥150,000,000 ($1.3 million), Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! -Take on Me (Shochiku) WK2
08 (---) ¥40,000,000 ($360,000), 0, ¥40,000,000 ($360,000), Renegades (Asmik Ace) NEW
09 (07) ¥39,000,000 ($350,000), -35%, ¥1,525,000,000 ($13.7 million), Murder on the Orient Express (Fox) WK6
10 (09) ¥36,000,000 ($325,000), -18%, ¥575,000,000 ($5.1 million), That Is Not a Child But a Minor (Toho) WK4

>Star Wars: The Last Jedi achieves a fifth-consecutive weekend atop the box-office, and while that's impressive, it continues to drop harder than expected. It has fallen pretty far behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens after five weeks in release, after debuting nearly as high (down just 4%) and achieving a comparable second weekend to it as well.

Perhaps poor WOM is having an impact, like it has seemingly in every other market, because it's probably going to finish below ¥8 billion ($70 million) unless it manages to stabilize almost immediately. It's looking at ¥7.5 billion ($67/68 million) right now, which is good, but that's going to be down a harsh 35% versus Episode VII after debuting within 5% of it... It's also assured to come in below all three prequel films, too, and will have to settle as only the fifth highest-grossing film in the Star Wars franchise.

>Kingsman: The Golden Circle retains its position in second place, and has already outgrossed Kingsman: The Secret Service after just two weeks in release. The Kingsman second outing is aiming for a total around ¥1.75 billion ($15/16 million), up 80-90% versus its predecessor -- very impressive.

>The 8-Year Engagement enjoys one of the best holds this weekend, and probably locked itself up for a total of ¥2.5 billion (~$23 million). It's currently at a multiplier of ~8.5 and will easily exceed a 9, and could even approach/hit a 10. It's not unusual for a film to reach a 10 multiplier if released in mid-December, but it's typically reserved for just one film of the season, and this year may have two.

>Destiny: The Tale of Kakamura holds pretty well, especially considering it was up 20% last weekend. It's very likely to reach the ¥3 billion (~$27 million) milestone now, and should exceed a multiplier of 10 in the process. This is a nice result for dir. Takashi Yamazaki, and for Toho, and continues to solidify himself as one of Japan's most-successful modern directors, both critically and financially.

>Yo-Kai Watch: Resurrection of the Demon King is down a lot, unsurprisingly post-holidays, and is only going to crawl over the ¥2 billion (~$18 million) milestone. It's going to experience nearly a 40% decline from its predecessor, and unlike the previous sequels in the franchise, it's not going to improve upon the last films' legs either... definitely a worrying sign for the Yo-Kai Watch movie franchise.

Last Weekend's Actuals, along with this Weekend's Actuals will be posted tomorrow as well.
