Looking at the price ticket for this and EVA, the previous movie lost a lot of potential not launching with IMAX/4D and instead adding them late into its run because i don't think the late run earning made much compared to this.

Usual locations were about 58% of its admissions both over the 2 day and the 3 day period. 65% over the 2 day period for the previous movie.

Yes given the theater count this was expected. I kept repeating the same over the weekend. Mostly likely with such huge theater count people might not go to usual locations and find a theater nearby instead. Thanks for that info

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: New Franchise & April OW Record For DC
Exceeding expectations, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet sets a new franchise opening weekend record, April opening weekend record, and scores the third biggest 3-day opening weekend of all-time!

The franchise also achieved its third film to open above 1 million admissions over the weekend frame, making it only the third franchise in history to have three films debut above that mark (behind Harry Potter's 5). And with five films now debuting above ¥1 billion, it's only one away from being tied with both Star Wars (6) and Harry Potter (6) with the franchise with the most ¥1 billion debuts.

Given the rise in COVID cases, little to no night showings, and the one-year delay, this couldn't have been a better result. If it performs similarly as the last couple films, it'll be aiming for ¥10 billion ($90 million+). It's 50/50 right now, but if it does reach that milestone, it'll be the first ever annual franchise film in history to achieve uber-blockbuster status.

This is going to be the last truly big film for quite awhile, so enjoy it.

The 18th film (Dimensional Sniper) had its second television broadcast on Saturday and earned an excellent 10.4% household rating (about 5.7 million viewers). I'll have to check, but that might be the highest TV rating for one of the Detective Conan films. If anyone knows, please share. If it helps, Zero the Enforcer or Fist of Blue Sapphire (films 22/23) may have had a slightly higher rating with their first TV broadcast.

And the anime typically earns between a 6-8% rating every week (~3.5-4.5 million viewers), for comparison. Most weekly anime have slowly declined naturally over the past decade in TV ratings, but Detective Conan has remained very stable.

Was Dimensional Sniper the second film to get above 10%, or did Zero the Enforcer or one of the other recent films also do it?

Zero the enforcer got a 11.6% rating when it was first aired and the darkest nightmare was also re-aired on TV last year which got something around 12% rating. Usually in these recent years many DC films re-airing in television often get a rating around 10%.

The admissions is possible, as it's pretty close.

Keep in mind that Mondays are Aeon Cinema Day, so the average ticket prices are a little lower on Mondays. Not as low as Wednesdays, but lower than the average that a film typically earns on a daily basis. Monday's average ticket price shouldn't be as high as it was on Friday-Sunday.

Also, tomorrow is Movix Cinema Day (every 20th), so the average price will be a little lower as well. Not as low as the above mentioned days since Movix isn't as large as Aeon, but it does have a slight impact.

It varies by film, but a general guide:

National Discount Movie Day (every 1st): -15%
Toho Cinema Day (every 14th): -10%
Ladies' Day (every Wednesday): -10%
Aeon Cinema Day (every Monday): -5%
Movix Cinema Day (every 20th): -2.5%

This is just general and doesn't apply for everything the same way. For example, a film skewing toward females is going to see an average ticket price a lot more than just 10% lower than normal (and it has little/no impact on films that skew largely toward males). And there are a lot more discount days in the market, but these are usually the only ones with a noticeable impact on the general average ticket price.

>Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet debuts with a massive way, selling 1,122,000 admissions over the weekend frame in 497 theaters (screen count not released), and a whopping 1,533,054 admissions over its first three-days in release. We've followed and discussed this one a great deal this weekend, so here is just a rundown of what its opening achieved:

>New April Opening Weekend Record (2nd in Admissions).
>New Franchise Opening Weekend Record (2nd in Admissions).
>New Franchise 3-Day Opening Weekend Record.
>3rd Highest 3-Day Opening Weekend of All-Time.
>4th Highest Opening Weekend Ever for an Animated Film.

Its 3-day total is 18% higher than its predecessor's, the previous highest in the franchise, and if it would have similar legs, it'll become the first film in the franchise (and the first annual film in any franchise) to ever achieve uber-blockbuster status by exceeding ¥10 billion ($90 million). In fact, it "only" needs to finish 6.7% above its predecessor to reach the milestone, so it can have slightly weaker legs and still manage it. However, don't get too excited as this is no guarantee, and it's likely going to close and come down close to the end of its run. But it currently has a greater chance than not in doing this, so some excitement can be had.

>Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time experienced a fairly big drop in its fifth weekend of release due to big screen/showtime cuts (premium formats, especially), but this is still pretty solid that shows a fair amount of interest is still there. Also, it exceeded 5 million admissions on Sunday, and has now sold 5,088,007 admissions after 42 days in release. I still believe it's heading right to that ¥8.5 billion (almost $80 million), but it can still go even a bit higher depending on Golden Week coming up soon.

>Monster Hunter exceeds the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone after its fourth-weekend of release. It's not going to overtake its total in the U.S. for Japan to become its #1 market, but it's hard to really be disappointed in its performance given it has broke the ¥1 billion barrier (commercial success mark) and easily outperformed any other non-U.S. market.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train managed to avoid a 50% drop and remain in the Top 5, though it was still hit pretty hard. It has now sold 28,763,050 admissions after 185-days in release. It's also just ¥278 million away from reaching the ¥40 billion milestone, and while it will take some time, it's going to get there. When? We'll likely know after Golden Week concludes in early May.

>Caution, Hazardous Wife: The Movie exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone after its fifth-weekend of release, and has sold 823,306 admissions now. It likely doesn't have enough in the tank to reach 1 million admissions unless it benefits greatly over Golden Week, but it's still a decent success that helps keep the box office alive between big releases.

¥10 billion+ (Uber-Blockbuster) / ¥5 billion+ (Blockbuster) / ¥3 billion+ (Hit) / ¥2 billion+ (Respectable) / ¥1 billion+ (Commercial Success)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (04/17-18); Charts Update
I'm guessing DS has now stayed 26 weeks inside Top 5 and 27 inside Top 10. That's just all kind of insane for a movie that opened so huge.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Twenty Seventh Weekends
Biggest Twenty-Seventh Weekends:

¥61,144,500 ($541,000), -15%, ¥24,462,749,500 ($231.7 million), Your Name. (Toho)
¥36,684,900 ($338,000), -49%, ¥39,722,939,300 ($379.7 million), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Toho/Aniplex)

And that's it! Spirited Away fell out of the top 10 in its 27th weekend and estimating it would just be guessing without knowing how far it fell out (would later resurface back in the top 10 in its 32nd week following its Oscar/push to ¥30 billion expansion).

Also, Demon Slayer has the highest known/tied ranking (5th) in its 27th weekend, beating Your Name. which was ranked 9th in its 27th weekend. It's very likely that Titanic had a higher ranking (or at least tied) in its 27th weekend, but no data exists of its exact rankings (besides being #1 for 22 weeks and somewhere between 2nd-5th from week 23-35) until its 36th week when it was #5.
