Missed that part. Hmm looks like Warcraft won't even get to $5m from Japan.

It'll gross around $1 million, if that. ;) Blizzard is largely unknown in Japan since gamers in the market rarely play on PCs (the gaming industry is overwhelmingly mobile/handhelds now), so Warcraft receiving a limited release and completely bombing isn't surprising.

Yeah changed it because the legs in Japan should get it to $1b on top of that you mentioned with Alice not doing so hot some holdovers should see a decent hold in the coming weekend.

Did you mean to say that Anpanman missed the top 5?

But Corpse said that it missed the top 10. Just a silly error, I bet.

Corpse, what do you think about One Piece Gold? Do you think it has a chance to overtake Zootopia?

Yes, I meant the Top 5. I was already thinking ahead to Warcraft while typing that, my bad.

Zootopia appears like it's slowing down considerably now, so I don't think it's going to reach ¥8 billion; rather it's probably going to finish with ¥7.7/7.8 billion, which is still phenomenal.

I have no doubt that One Piece Film Gold will have a mammoth opening weekend, perhaps the biggest of the year and one of the biggest ever. It's going to receive the widest release ever for a domestic film, debuting on a huge 743 screens in three weeks. By comparison, the last film opened on just 300 screens and delivered the second biggest opening for a domestic film at the time by selling over 1.1 million admissions.

And with the advantage of higher ticket prices by being first One Piece film to be released since the tax hike, and the first to be released in 3D, MX4D, 4DX... it's going to be big. It'll need a 16% increase in gross, not just admissions, over the last film to reach ¥8 billion, which should be enough to outgross Zootopia, but will it? I'd say it's 50/50 right now. I'll definitely be tracking it once seating becomes available for it, which should be pretty soon.

Well... we'll have to wait another week until anything truly exciting opens and ignites the box office.

Independence Day: Resurgence, based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, doesn't appear to be performing well enough to suggest an opening weekend above ¥500 million - which should have come pretty easily.

The original film was a massive success in Japan, becoming the market's fourth film to ever earn over ¥10 billion. The era of the disaster film is long since gone, though, and Japan's marketplace is significantly different than it was twenty years ago. But still... an opening similar to the forecast can only get it to around ¥3 billion ($30 million), down over 70% compared to its predecessor.

The only good news coming from Alice Through the Looking Glass and, likely, Independence Day: Resurgence disappointing is that it'll allow July's other big films (which already have more potential) plenty of seating/showtimes when they open. So, hopefully, Finding Dory, One Piece Film Gold, and Godzilla: Resurgence are able to take full advantage of July's early disappointments.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Independence Day)
Independence Day: Resurgence actually performed very well yesterday, and is very likely to debut above ¥500 million ($5 million+), and comfortably so, based on Saturday's figures. It may have a chance at ¥4 billion+ ($40 million), which would be good. That's still down over 60% of what its predecessor earned, but considering its performance elsewhere, it's respectable/strong enough.

And the holdovers had excellent holds today, too, which is a bit surprising; this weekend (pre-Summer vacation weekend) can sometimes be a bit hard on them.

I'll post the Saturday admissions from the Usual Locations soon.

25 (22) 1,652 (-25%), [11/30], Brooklyn (Fox) WK2

Quite strong for Independence Day: Resurgence. It's in position to deliver the biggest opening since Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare from 13 weeks ago, looking to debut above the ¥500 million ($5 million+) mark, maybe even ¥600 million ($6 million+) if Sunday is generous.

An opening on this level should give it a final total around ¥4 billion ($40 million), and while that's down over 60% compared to its massive predecessor, it's still a good result and easily its best showing overseas, after China.

Saturday was very kind to the majority of holdovers: Alice Through the Looking Glass is holding strong in its second frame; Too Young To Die! continues its nice surprise run; and Zootopia is up, and looking for a potential weekend increase in its twelfth week of rlease.

Independence Day: Resurgence saw a sizable ~20% drop on Sunday, but still came in strong over the weekend. Based on its admissions here, it should have sold between 350,000-375,000 admissions to earn somewhere around ¥525-¥575 million ($5.2-5.7 million) over the weekend frame, or possibly slightly higher if its premium format showings delivered.

Overall, this would be a good, maybe even "great" opening if it's on the high end of the range (or above) when you consider how it's performed elsewhere around the world.

And most of the holdovers enjoyed very good/exceptional holds.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates here shortly.

>Independence Day: Resurgence is off to a pretty successful start, and looks to have opened 5-10% higher than last year's Terminator: Genisys, another sequel to a popular old film which opened over the same weekend (pre-Summer Vacation weekend).

If it were to follow Terminator's run from this point forward, it'll finish around ¥3 billion ($30 million). However, Terminator was notable frontloaded for a July release, and while that may end up being the case with Independence Day as well (Sunday was pretty rough), it should be able to do better than that, even if just slightly. So depending on tomorrow's actuals, I think we're looking at a ~¥3.5 billion ($35 million) finish.

>The holdovers made the best of this weekend by earning excellent holds, and good thing, too, since they'll all begin to see severe seating/showtime loss beginning next weekend, and throughout the remainder of summer, as the summer box office season really begins.

>Independence Day: Resurgence earns itself a debut atop the box office, and delivered a pretty impressive opening weekend in the process. The sequel to Roland Emmerich's original uber-blockbuster achieved the biggest debut for an imported film since Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the market, selling 381,521 admissions on a whopping 963 screens over the weekend frame, and 422,779 admissions since opening on Friday.

The opening, while impressive, could have been higher given how successful the original film was in the market, but if you consider how poorly it's performed elsewhere throughout the world, then it's pretty strong. The likelihood of exceeding the ¥3 billion ($30 million) milestone is good, and as long as it survives the upcoming summer competition, then a total around ¥3.5 billion ($35 million) isn't too unreasonable.

>Alice Through the Looking Glass almost mirrored its predecessor's second weekend drop; it's just too bad that it's earning just a third of its predecessor's gross. The fact that it's nearly tripled its opening weekend after two weeks is impressive and doesn't suggest the film will be frontloaded like it was, I believe, in every other market.

Alice's second outing is still on target for around ¥3 billion ($30 million), but if it, too, can survive the upcoming summer competition, then maybe it can finish closer to ¥3.5 billion ($35 million) as well.

>Too Young To Die! continues to hold on very well and what was seen just a potential ¥1 billion earner, has become a likely ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) earner. While that isn't much, it's notable given its troubled production and poor release date (mid/late June).

>Zootopia is still playing strongly in its twelfth week of release; and even though it finally dipped below the ¥100 million mark over the weekend, the vast majority of films can only dream of achieving a twelfth weekend this high. I believe it'll see a significant drop when Finding Dory and Pokemon open this upcoming weekend, though it should finish its absolutely incredible run around ¥7.8 billion ($72 million) with just over 6 million admissions (for a multiplier of 17.5).

>Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV achieved a Top 10 debut despite its limited release. The 3DCG animated film managed to sell 22,818 admissions on 44 screens to rank tenth over the weekend, but its high avg. ticket price allows it to achieve ninth place in terms of gross.

Corpse, as I said before, I love what you do. Would you please do a comparison of 12th weekends? It's Zootopia's last significant weekend, just going by the listings on the theater websites.

Sure. I'll post it either later tonight or tomorrow.

And it's definitely the film's last significant weekend. I just looked up Toho Cinema's event calendar and July 15th is listed as its last day at all the theaters I checked out (~20% of the nation). This past weekend might even be its last weekend as I don't see it listed to be playing this upcoming weekend at Movix Cinemas either.

Deadpool, Evergreen Love, 64: Part 1, and a few others are also listed to be closing on July 15th to make way for the upcoming busy summer schedule.

If One Piece's manga sales are any indication, I don't see Gold opening higher or grossing more than Z. Its latest volume's sales have dropped another 100k first-week after volume 81's sales had dropped nearly 300k first week compared to volume 80. I thought that drop was due to the Kumamoto earthquake, but it looks like I was mistaken.

I know they're offering some exclusive release for the first few million moviegoers so there might be a rush-factor, but it seems the size of the fanbase has fizzled a bit.

Looks like Zootopia has been totally removed from theaters. The only thing left to count are the weekdays.
