Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 Charts Updating
I'll post a Summer Preview either tomorrow or on Thursday this week.

The Summer Box Office Season doesn't begin in Japan until July, and beginning this weekend with the release of Alice Through the Looking Glass, every week until late-August has at least one major tentpole scheduled.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is already looking like it could be the widest release of the year, with some theaters scheduling it for 25-30 showings a day.

And while I don't expect it'll come anywhere close to matching the massive success of the original film, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, as a brand, is very popular in Japan and very early ticket sales for the new film look fair enough at this stage, and online traffic is good. It should deliver a strong kick-off to the Summer Box Office Season.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Alice Arrives
Image

Alright, so Alice Through the Looking Glass will be opening this Friday with more seats/showtimes than even Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was previously the widest release since I've been extensively tracking the box office (mid-2010).

And unsurprisingly, this is likely the beginning of the end for Zootopia as it's losing ~50% of its seating, and ~35% of its showtimes in the wake of Alice opening. It's become a consistent trend of one Disney blockbuster killing the late legs (often very late legs, third/fourth month in the Top 5/10) of another Disney blockbuster.

So the question of whether it'd be Alice Through the Looking Glass this weekend or Finding Dory in two weeks that would cut Zootopia's run short has been answered.

I'll post the Summer Preview later this evening.

IDR gets its own weekend surprising. Dory and Pokemon going head to head continuing the trend from last few years. TJB should also cut short Dory's run but that's still a month of run, so it should be ok.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Alice Arrives (Summer Begins)
Well, Independence Day was one of the early uber-blockbusters (¥10 billion+ earner) in Japan, achieving the major milestone after E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Antarctica (1983), and Jurassic Park (1993). The 2016 marketplace is much, much different than it was in 1996 though, and signs aren't indicating the sequel will be able to capitalize on its predecessor's massive performance as intended.

Finding Dory shouldn't be affected too much by The Jungle Book. Mid-July through mid-August (that 4-6 week span) can support numerous hit films and blockbusters at a time, and if the former ends up being a huge hit (likely), it'll maintain plenty of seats/showtimes.

Generally speaking, one film rarely hurts another film during July/August, even if they're direct competition. That's why the studios schedule so many, big, films during this time.

>Alice Through the Looking Glass will easily debut atop the box office, delivering the biggest opening weekend since April, however...

Its Friday opening was pretty lackluster, selling around ~110,000 admissions for ~¥150 million ($1.4 million) based on estimates. And considering Friday was the 1st of the month (discount ticket day), that's pretty low. This doesn't necessarily mean the film is doomed this weekend or thereafter, but it's definitely not going to come anywhere near matching its predecessor's success (Alice in Wonderland is still Disney's biggest live-action film in the market).

The good news is that Saturday's pre-sales are quite solid and indicate that it should end up selling more tickets today than yesterday, suggesting it may simply be a weekend film (Friday is still a regular weekday in Japan at the box office).

So based on Saturday's pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, it's looking at maybe 300,000 admissions or so over the weekend. And predicting that its avg. ticket price is high, very likely due to so many premium format showings, it should open pretty close to ¥500 million ($5 million), and while a fair enough start, that'd be down a significant 60% compared to the first film... An opening of this level would also making reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion ($50 million) very unlikely, and a total around ¥4 billion ($40 million) would be the target.

>This year's Anpanman will probably open on par with all the others films, either just below or slighly above ¥100 million.

>Warcraft is also opening this weekend in Japan, but... it's being dumped as a limited release, playing on just 47 screens. It won't be able to make the Top 10.

To get a better idea of how Alice Through the Looking Glass is doing today, and for the weekend, I'll post regular updates comparing its ticket sales against other recent Disney films.

At the mid-day point for Saturday, here is how Alice Through the Looking Glass is faring against other recent Disney films at the same point-in-time:

38% behind Cinderella
35% behind Big Hero 6
29% behind Zootopia
14% behind Inside Out

It's definitely worth noting that Alice played very well in the evening/night yesterday, so it's likely to improve upon these percentages as the day progresses. Also, its avg. ticket price will be notable higher than any of them as well, so it won't trail them as much in terms of gross.

Assuming that it does indeed play well this evening, and the premium format showings deliver, I think it'll beat Inside Out in admissions and gross, and should trail Zootopia slighly in admissions and end up on par with it in gross.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is the widest release I've ever seen (it's playing even wider than The Force Awakens by 4%), and Deadpool was one of the films hit hard by seating/screen cuts as a result. 58% might actually be conservative (it's down nearly 80% so far today...).

Saturday comparisons with other recent Disney films:

5% ahead of Inside Out
15% behind Zootopia
25% behind Big Hero 6
34% behind Cinderella

*Percentages in terms of admissions.

Alice Though the Looking Glass pulled ahead of Inside Out, and closed the gap with the other films pretty well once its evening/night showings came in. It's playing notably stronger in the evening than other Disney films, suggesting it's bringing in a lot of teens and/or adults.

It's harder to determine how it compares to them in terms of gross for the day, but considering its avg. ticket price will be much higher than any of them, I think it can comfortably improve its percentages above by at least 10% in terms of gross.

I'll post the full Saturday Admissions from the Usual Locations later this evening.

>Alice Through the Looking Glass takes the top spot with the best debut since April, but does so in unspectacular fashion.

The sequel to the uber-blockbuster hit Alice in Wonderland (still Disney's most-successful live-action film in Japan) was the widest release I've ever seen (so since at least 2010), but only managed to fill 10.3% of its available seating - averaging a disappointing 32 people per showing.

So, needless to say, it didn't need so many seats/showtimes, but that's the advantage of being the first major release of the summer. As long as its Sunday can match or manage an increase over Saturday (it's looking pretty decent), then it should end up earning ~¥450 million (~$4.5 million) on close to 300,000 admissions over the weekend frame. Unfortunately a debut of ¥500 million+ is looking pretty unlikely, which would have been considered a good, if still underwhelming, opening.

If it opens near the projected figure, it'll be targeting a total of ¥4 billion ($40 million) in Japan, down over 60% compared to its predecessor.

>This year's Anpanman is performing quite well, but most of its theaters are accounted for at the usual locations; so while it'll achieve a third or fourth place ranking here for the weekend, it'll end up coming in a couple positions lower nationwide.

>All of the holdovers suffered steep drops yesterday as a result of significant seating/screen cuts.

A strong Sunday resulted in some much better holds than Saturday's results were indicating yesterday. Most films saw healthy increases today including Alice Through the Looking Glass, which actually makes its second-consecutive day that it's increased.

Weekend Estimates will be posted soon.

>Alice Through the Looking Glass earns itself a comfortable and solid debut atop the box office, though failed at starting off the summer box office season with a bang.

Based on estimates, its weekend admissions should come in a bit shy of 300,000, which is quite disappointing. However, its avg. ticket price should be very high, so its weekend gross won't appear as bad by comparison (though it's still weak). If the estimate holds, its opening weekend will be: 67% behind Alice in Wonderland; 36% behind Maleficent; and 21% behind Cinderella.

It's worth noting though that the film did open on Friday (all comparable films were normal Saturday openers), so its opening weekend is slightly deflated. But all in all, underwhelming, disappointing debut for Alice. It'll be aiming for a total of ¥3.5-4.0 billion ($35-40 million) in the market; and while that figure will look excellent compared to its totals from other markets (second only to China), it's still well below the blockbuster mark (¥5 billion) and will be down a significant 65-70% from its predecessor in the market.

>Most of the holdovers experienced somewhat heavy drops (a drop approaching or over 40% is generally poor), but it's primarily due to losing so many seats/showtimes in the wake of Alice occupying so many. I would say they'll recover in the coming weeks since Alice clearly didn't need to be one of the widest releases of all-time, but the summer box office schedule is very crowded so expect them to drop out of the top 10 pretty soon..

>Alice Through the Looking Glass finally made it to Japan in hopes of kicking off the Summer Box Office, and while it did enjoy the best opening weekend since April (not saying much considering May and June are weak months...), it mostly disappointed.

The sequel to Walt Disney's most-successful live-action film (both in opening weekend and overall total) only sold 273,209 tickets over the weekend frame across an enormous 979 screen count. And since opening on Friday, it still only managed to sell 370,000 admissions over its three-day opening. If this was just Disney's latest live-action fairy tale, the debut wouldn't be too bad (though still 38% behind Maleficent and 23% behind Cinderella), but considering the success of the first film, the empty market, and a prime release date... it's poor, regardless.

Walt Disney and theaters were certainly hoping for much, much more, given it was playing on nearly 1,000 screens (3rd highest screen count of all-time), and with the most available seats I've ever seen as well. It only managed to fill about 11% of its seats over the weekend frame; averaging a dismal 29 people per showing and 279 people per screen...

There is a bit of hope in the way of potential good legs, though, since it hasn't shown any early signs of frontloading, managing to increase on both Saturday and Sunday. But this opening can only get it so high, so it'll be aiming for a total of ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million), or maybe ¥4 billion (~$40 million) if it's able to hang in there until Obon Week next month.

>Too Young To Die! held quite well in its second frame; exceeding the 500,000 admissions mark over the weekend. It's certainly a lock now to exceed the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, and may just be able to reach ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) as well. Not too bad, especially considering its delayed release.

>Zootopia survived the release of Alice pretty well, though it did experience its largest drop-to-date due to significant seating/screen loss. But now that summer is about to kick into high gear with many big films coming up, and with the announcement of the DVD/Blu-Ray next month, it won't be able to recover. Still, it's sold over 5.7 million admissions so far, and will come quite close to reaching the ¥8 billion (~$75 million) milestone; incredible performance.

>Anpanman: Nanda and the Runda of the Toy Star misses the Top 5, selling 66,555 tickets over the weekend on just 184 screens. The opening is 8% lower than last year's film, but 10% higher than 2014's film, as the popular children's character continues its very consistent box office appeal.

Outside of the Top 10, Warcraft received a limited release in the market, earning ¥27,907,900 ($292,000) on 21,450 admissions on 47 screens since opening on Friday. Needless to say, this disappointing start answers the question of whether the property is well-known in Japan.

Biggest Eleventh Weekends [Wknd Rank]/Eleventh Week Totals -> Final Totals (2001-)

¥700.3 million (-13%) [1st] / ¥19.85 billion -> ¥25.48 billion - Frozen (2014)
¥435.0 million (-15%) [1st] / ¥23.60 billion -> ¥30.40 billion - Spirited Away (2001)
¥323.1 million (-08%) [2nd] / ¥18.98 billion -> ¥20.30 billion - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
¥311.8 million (-13%) [3rd] / ¥13.23 billion -> ¥15.60 billion - Avatar (2009)
¥252.8 million (-18%) [3rd] / ¥16.85 billion -> ¥19.60 billion - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

¥101.7 million (-44%) [5th] / ¥11.31 billion -> ¥12.02 billion - The Wind Rises (2013)

¥100 million+

Another incredible accomplishment for Zootopia by making the Biggest Eleventh Weekends list. Its eleventh weekend is down 75% compared to its opening weekend, giving it the best opening weekend -> eleventh weekend retention on the list after: Frozen (-8%...), Avatar (-47%), and Spirited Away (-57%).

And seven of the other ten films still on the list are in the Top 10 Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time as well, with The Last Samurai, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Wind Rises being the three on the outside ranking eleventh, twelfth, and seventeenth on the all-time chart, respectively.

Frozen. :funny:

I don't think we'll ever see such a run again. :shock:

Never say never, however... it's as close to an unbeatable run as you can get and the defining film of the box office this decade (nothing's going to come remotely close for many years).

Interestingly, each decade at the Japan Box Office has had one film that rose way above the rest, whether it's achieving a new all-time admissions/gross record, a new record performance/milestone, or a combination of both:

1950s - Emperor Meiji and the Great Russo-Japanese War (first film to sell over 10 million tickets: 13.00 million)
1960s - Tokyo Olympiad (new all-time tickets record; first film to sell over 15 million tickets: 19.50 million)
1970s - Jaws (new all-time grosser; first film to gross ¥9 billion at the box office: ¥9.00 billion)
1980s - E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (new all-time grosser; first film to gross over ¥10 billion: ¥13.70 billion)
1990s - Titanic (new all-time grosser; first film to gross over ¥20 billion: ¥26.20 billion)
2000s - Spirited Away (new all-time grosser and ticket seller; first film to sell over 20 million tickets; first film to gross over ¥30 billion: 23.5 million, ¥30.40 billion)
2010s - Frozen (new all-time performance for a #1 film; first imported film to sell over 20 million tickets: 20.03 million)

Frozen is the "weakest" here in terms of milestone achievements since it's largely limited to imported records (because of Spirited Away), but its actual run is truly peerless and was even cut short by Disney. If it had been able to outgross Titanic to achieve the #1 rank for an imported film to go along with its admissions record for an imported film, and it came very close, it'd be a stronger entry to the list.

Jaws would be the second "weakest" here because while being the first film to gross ¥9 billion, thus becoming the new all-time grosser, is significant; it only did so due to the ticket price spike of the mid-1970s.

With Alice getting all the attention this weekend, I completely forgot that Warcraft was also released in the market this weekend.

Corpse, Deadline says $275k for fifth place, I don't see it being correct. I understand Warcraft is a limited release in Japan, any comments on its opening?

Quote:
Legendary and Universal Pictures’ Warcraft added seven Latin American markets this frame as well as Japan. The total for the frame was $6.2M in 56 territories. The Universal international total is $156.1M. Combined with the estimated U.S. total of $45.9M, Universal’s haul is $202M. The worldwide cume including China’s $220.1M is $422.1M. In Lat Am, Argentina was the top opener with $800K. In a limited release, Japan picked up $273K in 5th place. Uruguay is Uni’s last market and says game-on this week.

I posted its actual in my weekend actuals write-up on the last page. I don't know why they said 5th place; it came in 12th place for the weekend. Unless they mean 5th place among imported films, but even then, it's actually ranked 4th if you exclude Japanese films...

Maybe Japan was its 5th best market among the eight it opened in this weekend? I believe that's what they meant in their report.

Corpse wrote:
Outside of the Top 10, Warcraft received a limited release in the market, earning ¥27,907,900 ($292,000) on 21,450 admissions on 47 screens since opening on Friday. Needless to say, this disappointing start answers the question of whether the property is well-known in Japan.
